Teens are being hospitalized for lung damage after vaping — "It's mind-boggling," doctor says

In Wisconsin, at least a dozen people have recently been hospitalized and treated for severe lung damage. The first cases were reported last month, and the number has been growing. All of these patients are young — between their teenage years and 30s — and all of them appear to have been harmed by vaping.

Wisconsin's Department of Health Services confirmed 12 cases and is investigating 13 others, including older patients up to their 50s who are experiencing lug damage as a result of vaping, according to The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

The hospitalization of at least a dozen young people raises the question: How have e-cigarettes caused so much damage, when they haven't even been around for that long?

"It's mind-boggling," Dr. Diana Zuckerman, president of the National Center for Health Research, told CBS News. "The vast majority of people who smoke started as children or as young teens, and yet you don't hear about people getting lung cancer until their 40s, 50s, 60s," she said. "Think about that compared to what's happening to these kids now. I've never heard of a smoker ending up in the hospital in their teens."

Willing to bet it's because of faulty cheap-ass equipment or some shit. Or just abnormal usage of vaping liquids. Like that retard a few years ago that started eating pure caffeine powder with a soup spoon and died from a caffeine overdose.

One kid admitted to smoking one entire Juul a day, every day. Thats fucking nuts. I've been vaping on the same 60 ml bottle of juice for about 8 months now, only filling up my 4 ml tank up about once a week.

Those Juul pods use nicotine salts instead of regular nicotine suspended in a Pg/vg mix, to better emulate the freebase mechanism of regular cigarettes. This means those fuckers hit harder than normal and are more addicting than a traditional pg/vg mix. The company making them are called Altria, the same parent company that lords over Phillip fucking Morris. It would not surprise me at all to learn that they are intentionally making their own shitty brand unsafer by comparison just to fuck over the growing E juice industry as a big "I TOLD YOU SO" sort of move. Either that or some one fucked up in the QA testing letting some unsafe bullshit hit the market.

Holy shit doing some more digging and I found this gem:
"The amount of nicotine in each cartridge – 59 mg/ml in the United States, limited to 20 mg/ml in the European Union – is substantially more than the majority of e-cigarettes on the market"

Thats fucking nuts and can no way be expected to help people with quitting smoking. Thats almost ten times the amount of nic than I get in my shit. I dont think I can even get 20 mg/ml at the vape shop if I wanted it. Fucking pure nic fluid you'd order off line to mix your own shit is only 5 mg/ml stronger. And they warn you up and down not to try and vape just that alone and have disclaimers and shit saying they wont be held liable if you fucking poison yourself.
>***We do not recommend this product be vaped as is at the higher nicotine levels (60mg and above). Doing so is at your own risk. Most users dilute this product to 24mg or lower for use.

I wonder if today's teens think someone with a juul is as cool as their grandparents thought Steve McQueen was smoking a cigarette. I don't get it.

What a shit article. They should tell us if this is happening elsewhere. They just say all of a sudden in Wisconsin over the course of a month they've had a bunch of cases. That doesn't sound like something normal. They don't even say for sure if all the cases were from Juul pods or how much the average person was using, just one story about one guy who used juul pods.

>one entire Juul a day, every day.
if that means a single cartridge/pod per day... that's not crazy high or anything. i've used a juul before and one pod per day was about my average, they're like a half pack of regular smokes. if anonymous kid meant 'an entire 4-pack of pods' then yeah that's crackhead territory. tbh the true horror of juul is the pods are $16 for a 4-pack.

the big downside of vaping is that it takes a bit of effort to know what the fuck settings to use and some idea of how your device works, and picking a reputable juice with reasonable nicotine content. i'm picturing a bunch of teenagers running their vapes at max power with shitty juice and pretending to be cool despite the fun burning sensation in their chests.

also this is a small sample size in a distinct area. much as news stories are hyping it... doesn't say much about 'vaping' in general. we're still in the same spot effectively, logic says it should be far less damaging than smoking but everyone is still accumulating data so no 'for sure' info.

It may be the same amount of nicotine but without the MAOIs in the tobacco it probably hits about the same as a half pack

CDC officials advised people to stop using e-cigarettes until scientists gain better understanding of the epidemic of serious vaping-related lung disease that has sickened as many as 450 people and left at least five dead across 33 states.

The latest deaths were reported Friday by health departments in Indiana, California and Minnesota, following deaths in Illinois and Oregon. State officials say a number of cases involve marijuana products, but caution against drawing any conclusions and say there may be multiple causes.

CDC said it had confirmed 215 vaping-related lung disease cases and was investigating another 235 possibly related to vaping.

Minnesota's first vaping-related death involved a 65-year-old man with a history of lung issues, the state's health department said. Indiana and Los Angeles County also reportedly had deaths. The first fatality was reported last week in Illinois. Earlier this week in Oregon, officials said a man who bought marijuana vapor from a dispensary had died.

A major case study published Friday found that 84 percent of 41 Illinois and Wisconsin patients reported using THC — the psychoactive ingredient of marijuana. But more than half of them also used nicotine.

At least six groups of potentially toxic compounds are found in e-cigarette liquids, including nicotine, carbonyls, volatile organic substances like benzenes, trace metals, poisonous flavoring compounds and microorganisms, Harvard public health expert David Christiani said in separate NEJM editorial.

No conclusions can be drawn just yet, Christiani wrote, but "physicians should discourage their patients from vaping."

I'm curious to see how this relates to the amount of vaping that is done. I've seen some people vape at an amount that I'd guess if it was smokes, they'd be putting the whole damn pack in their mouth and lighting up.

because you can maintain your nicotine addiction, not smell like cigarettes, and be smug about it, while developing new lung diseases

The one that killed the Oregon guy was reported to be hash oil. There is no oversight into what the dispensaries put in the stuff, and they buy empty carts wholesale off aliexpress at most places.

Smug, seems about right in description of e-gig smokers. I generally hated the smell of tobacco smoke, but the people are pretty mellow. vaping nicotine people are like, kind of a different breed.

Do bud vapes still have to use cotton? I don't remember how that shit works. I'm sure it's safe enough, if the vape itself is made from inert materials. I combust so I can't talk shit.

Probably, dry herb vaping is really great, it tastes great, it seemingly doesn't fuck up my throat and lungs and with if you don't vape it until it's black you can make edibles with it.

Do we have similar cases happening in Europe and non-Western countries? Because I haven't heard anything about this over here on the other side of the Atlantic.

Here's my guess...

It's not that vaping is bad. It's that America/no regulations/capitalism/FDA being a corrupt corporate propaganda machine is bad.

Then the media took it and endlessly milked it for fearbait clicks.

Americans think everything is perfect now that the US a bankrupt warmongering police state flooded by illegal immigrants and hard work is punished with taxes and regulations and laziness is rewarded with welfare.

Americans feel like everyone is rich now that there is welfare.

Americans say that there is no crime now that everything is illegal.

Americans insist there is no terrorism because there is NSA wiretapping.

No country in history has ever hated freedom as much as the USA does.

You know that all hope is lost when you talk to 5 Americans in one day and one says that the Bill of Rights should be repealed, another says blacksmithing should be illegal, one swears wearing fur should be a crime, one says private charities should be a outlawed, and another says bump stocks must be banned.

Dutch lung doctors have called vapers with medical issues to report to their doctors, so they can check if the same thing is happening here.

It'll be interesting to see what happens, because over here in the Netherlands, there's far more control over what is sold to customers.
