What do we do? How can we help? This is one of the Earth's greatest ecosystems, there must be something non-brazilians can do besides "send prayers".

Nothing about that exact fire in particular but you can plant trees. If you plant just one a month somewhere like a park or trail you will have planted 12 for every year and depending on how long you live that will be a lot of trees when the world needs them most. If you live in a temperate climate just start a group of trees in containers one year and go out to plant them in the ground the following spring to ensure their survival.

Every other action we can take involves huge political shifts resulting in taxing the biggest polluters and massive overhauls of ecological protection laws and strict government oversight along with massive public works funded by those taxes and I don't think humanity has its' collective shit together enough to make the health of the planet a priority because muh manifest destiny.

Organize an anarchist cell, start an eco-commune, practice permaculture, form a planned economy within a network of eco-communes.

I bet one of his fellow fascists does it within a year, given how much of a fuckup he's turned out to be.

a nice thought, but ancient forests have underground root/fungi networks that we are only beginning to comprehend. having sterilized manufactured trees in your suburb does not replace the amazon

Word.

The planet is fine. We're going away. And we won't leave a trace behind, except for some slightly radioactive microplastics and a few machines on the Moon and Mars.

Less arguing and more heckling, I didn't expect a response, that's why I posted the Chinese lady manually stimulating a phantom disembodied member. I guess I could have laid into the bot more text wise as well instead of just phoning it in. Thanks for pointing that out though.

I really think this is more a testing ground then somewhere their trying to influence. You see the chinabot posts flip between hard right, hard left, pro-america, and anti-american posts, like its trying to gauge how people react to them.

>The Amazon needs more than our prayers.
>So what can YOU do?⁣

✔ As an emergency response, donate to frontline Amazon groups working to defend the forest. ⁣
✔ Consider becoming a regular supporter of the Rainforest Alliance’s community forestry initiatives across the world’s most vulnerable tropical forests, including the Amazon; this approach is by far the most effective defense against deforestation and natural forest fires, but it requires deep, long-term collaboration between the communities and the public and private sectors. ✔ Stay on top of this story and keep sharing posts, tagging news agencies and influencers. ⁣
✔ Be a conscious consumer, taking care to support companies committed to responsible supply chains.⁣ Eliminate or reduce consumption of beef; cattle ranching is one of the primary drivers of Amazon deforestation.
✔ When election time comes, VOTE for leaders who understand the urgency of our climate crisis and are willing to take bold action—including strong governance and forward-thinking policy.⁣

Yes, and no. Planting more trees would help, but for a country like the US, every man woman and child would need to plant 10 trees a year, every year to even slightly offset deforestation and there's not a whole lot of places where you can just start planting.

You have to stop deforestation, stop clear cutting the rainforest for grazing land, you have to stop a lot of things and that's just not going to happen.
