https://www.reuters.com/article/us-canada-china/less-than-a-third-of-canadians-view-china-favorably-poll-idUSKBN1XE23Z

“The chill is real,” concluded the survey. China is now viewed favorably by 29% of Canadians, down from 36% two years ago but up from 22% in February, it concluded.

That said, respondents wanted commercial exchanges with China to continue, with 62% supporting the negotiation of a bilateral free trade agreement.

They're pissed the Chinese bought so many houses and appartments in Canada until it caused a housing crisis in some cities.

You don't need to be racist to hate rich fucks who mess with your city's dynamics for their own gains. It's happening everywhere and it doesn't matter if it's rich Saudis, Russians or Chinese but it fucking sucks.

Non-nuanced polls like this play right into the Chinese Communist Party's propaganda. They want to paint the picture that the west is against them to fuel nationalism and the wannabe maoist bullshit they call "Xi Jinping Thought".

Something like "While I dispense the autocratic dictatorship in that Country I sympathize with the struggle of the Chinese to archive a modern standard of living."
  • probably also means "unfavorably"

Are you guys forgetting that when the Americans arrested the Huawei heiress in Vancouver China responded by picking two random Canadian dudes who happened to be in the country and detaining them without access to the embassy or lawyers?

The housing bubble is one thing, immigration is another, we don't even need to get into tourists, they're an authoritarian regime that kidnapped our citizens as a petty "if you dare touch our people we will touch yours harder" escalation, pretty understandable people would be a little more wary of them after that

Yeah, if Westerners have a problem with the symptoms of unfettered global capitalism they can always feel free to stop propping it up.

Or just get mad at the Yellow Man Bad for playing by the rules our countries forced on the world, I guess.

It's not just "the west" and it's not just China. It is primarily the policies and actions of the government of the People's Republic of China that antagonize "the west" and other directions - because it's not like just the "the west" has complaints. It's mostly just that westerners can complain louder. The behaviour of certain tourists is a different issue and, while one should judge individuals individually, it is easy to get a bad reputation when a bunch of people whom have never travelled gain the chance to do so.

Secondly it's not like China is singled out. China barely gets a mention amid the spectacular shows on offer elsewhere. Now that Bejing has bought Ankara it's not like the Uighurs have much more to turn to than other beleaguered minorities around the world who generally face far less influential opponents than the PRC.
