I recently invested in an expandable baton. My first course on defensive techniques is in march, till then I either plan on playing with this thing every night till i feel comfortable carrying it or sticking it in a drawer till march. I've spent hours on the web watching videos on the "proper" use of these and I feel i understand the concept of lethal and non lethal strikes..my question is; if i hypothetically draw one of these shouldn't I feel my life is in danger? and in that case shouldn't a lethal strike be justified?

lol, you guys. The reason I dealt with the drunk thief with a baton rather than a firearm was because I could clearly see that he was not going to be much of a physical threat to me. I believe in the escalation of force that I was trained to use in the army. That is, using the minimum amount of force necessary to pacify a threat. In this case, all I had to do to stop this guy from stealing my tenant's bike was to assert myself with a flashlight and a baton. There was no need to come out with my AK charged and ready. In the other circumstance, where the guy had a knife and was threatening to kill one of my tenant's, it became necessary to show that I had a firearm and was willing to use it if he tried to harm anyone.

I really don't like doing this kind of thing, I don't think it's cool, and it actually makes me feel bad and kind of regretful when I have to confront someone with a weapon. I wish I didn't have to do it, but like I said, if I didn't, I know that no one else around here would. People would just be walking off with bikes and attacking each other and breaking into places and no one would stop them. I know for a fact that none of my tenants own a firearm, and the cops can take between 30 minutes and in one case over 10 hours to respond to threats, violence, or gunfire. So it's pretty much up to me, even though I'm naturally a laid back kind of guy. Such is life in the hood.

You've already managed to prove within just 3 sentences that you dont know fuck all about your tool. There's no such thing as a non-lethal strike. Its either a lethal or less than lethal strike, with the second only always marginally capable of causing eventual death.

Buy some pepper spray if you can't handle the fact that a guaranteed non-lethal strike isn't even possible. Always be mentally prepared to end someone's life by accident or if necessary if you ever plan to use it against someone.

What the fuck, Isn't the new decade suppose to bring a new era of innovation? Shot Show 2020 footage and news is literally all uninspired ar-15 deriatives and pistol carbines/chassis's and (LITERAL) Glock clones, it's literally all ASS. it's ASS where the innovation in the firearms industry gone? This is quite possibly one of the most dissapointing shot shows to date.

I mean, what do you want man? Small arms are really, really good. There's little headroom for revolutionary improvement.

Go caseless or plastic ammo and you get head buildup.
Go DEW and you get super heavy batteries.
Go flechette and you get a meme gun.

There's no innovation because we're going to need fundamental advances in materials science to get any big shifts in the state of the art for guns.

The only promising stuff is patents expiring and opening competition, like EOTech's holographic sight patents expiring, resulting in cheaper and better holos like the UH-1 and more to come. But that's still basically just iterative improvements and lower costs.

The only other promising area is digital integration, but that's at least 10 years from the commercial sector and isn't going to take off quickly unless there's unexpected military adoption. State of the art there with compute units and AR displays is incredibly promising for consumer electronics in the next 5 years, but not yet small or reliable enough for firearms, and fuck all work has been done to develop useful software for use with firearms.

I feel like you have unrealistic expectations for what innovation should look like in a mature and competitive industry.

Not hardly, if you hold a gun by the carrying handle, even if a round is chambered and the safety on, there is no chance of it firing and then hitting someone. Slings are better of course but in the military, only in training or deployment are live ammo allowed to the dipshits serving and muzzle discipline is hammered into you.

I'm with OP though, I have five or six AR's and the only one I shoot even somewhat often is the 20" HBAR bushmaster from the early 2000's. Thinking about buying a .300 AAC pistol and making it an SBR/Suppressor. Would go well with me loading my own and shooting cast rounds. .223 is hard to make a cast bullet round for and have it cycle and not tumble.

long story short, I have atleast 2 aggravated assault charges from when I was like 14 (its been a long time i forget the specifics). if i remember correctly after all was said and done i was considered an adjudicated delinquent, i forget if they said my record would be expunged or not.

anyway, I have recently considered getting into firearms for sport and self defense, but I'm not sure where things fall legally, and from what I've read so far my state could put me on probation if I don't fill out my background check properly. is there any way short of hiring a laywer to look into my case that I can get info on how to proceed legally?

I know this might come off a tad bit unrelated, but I’ve noticed that American cops *really* seem to enjoy shooting dogs. For example, there was a recent case in Texas where a cop attempted to shoot a dog but killed a woman instead.

Also, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page (ODMP), out of 83 animal-related officer deaths in the United States since 1776, only 6 were by (rabid) dogs, however only as a result of succumbing to the rabies virus rather than from mauling. The most recent one happening in 1936.

However, this shouldn’t be a problem for cops (or pretty much anyone in general) because America has been declared rabies-free since 2007 by the CDC. Now you can only get it mostly from bats, among other wild animals as the North American canine variant of the virus has been declared extinct. In fact, the last autochthonous case in a human from canines in the United States happened in 1994 in Texas where 14-year-old Rolando Bazan (pictured) died after an unvaccinated puppy scratched him. The strain was identified as that associated with Texas coyote/border dogs. Prior to that, there was also another case in Texas of 55-year-old San Juanita Barrera who died from an unidentified encounter likely with a family dog. In that case, the strain was identified as that of dogs in Mexico and along the border of Mexico and Texas.

Statistically, a police officer is more likely to be killed by their own horse than by any dog. But yet cops still shoot dogs, seemingly for sport. Why is this? Is it really justified? If not, what would be a better approach to jeopardizing peoples lives just to shoot an animal?

I'm not concerned about home invasion, hunting or sport but I do want a gun as a sort of civic duty. So when shit hits the fan I won't be unarmed.

What practical gun would you recommend? I'm looking at rifles or carbines. Something that I could hunt with if necessary. But mostly this gun would be staying locked in the closet except for target practice. I'm thinking some sort of simple and reliable semi automatic rifle or carbine.

Logical increments based on price would be nice.

Problem with that is that you can't ever transfer or sell it, unless you wanna go through the endless headache of trying to get the ATF to register a serial number for it.

Which is gonna suck ass after democrats inevitably re-take the white house and get another AWB passed, and even the shittiest of shitty ARs and AKs that are grandfathered will be selling for $4,000+
Caroline Pemmlesteg - Sun, 01 Dec 2019 21:06:44 EST gG9cwjCs No.44070 Reply
So much misinformation in this thread. ffs

Alright so I've built a couple. First thing to know is to buy a real heat treated receiver and do it right so you don't end up with total shit from a blank or 80% or whatever. I am speaking from experience. Just go through the FFL and get a real lower. Second piece of advice is buy a real AK. This isn't an AR. This shit is actually pretty difficult and I'm a pretty highly skilled machinist.

It has been a long time since it has been cost effective to buy parts kits and then turn them into rifles. At least 10 years at this point. You also need the tools to start with since you need more than a ratchet set and screw driver unlike with an AR. As I remember it I needed to make from scratch a bending jig, I needed a press, I used a lathe although I could have gotten away without one, a milling machine although a drill press would work just slower, a custom made rivet crusher for my press, and a heat treating furnace along with a welder. You can bypass the bending jig, welding, and heat treating by buying a premade receiver.

Next thing is be prepared to fuck up some shit. I botched my first build's receiver by not heat treating and welding the guide rails right IIRC. I also didn't turn down my barrel and it was oversized by about 2 thou and it made pressing and headspacing an utter nightmare. I literally bent my press slightly and first barrel badly by getting pissed and carried away one late night. Again, you have different parts in a parts kit usually and those parts are from all kinds of different countries who had different factories and you get 1 or 2 barrel manufactures to work with so all that shit needs to be in spec to work. And it never is.

I won't get into building as you can research that on your own but again, it isn't cost effective anymore, your first couple will be shittier than your wasr-10, and there are tons of headaches to deal with along with needing specialize tools which will immediately blow your budget out of the water unless you're building at least 7-10 rifles.

You also have 922r compliance to deal with. I won't go into this but it is pretty easy to deal with but you gotta have at least like 9 parts that are US made or else it is illegal. I've never heard of anyone being prosecuted for this but building guns in the US from imported parts kits gets "tricky" in this regard. IIRC a decent tapco trigger group is like 4-5 parts, the barrel is 1, the receiver is 1, and the stocks and shit can be like 2 so it isn't too hard to pass. Been a minute since I bothered with building guns from parts kits so just look up 922(r) AK compliance. Another little caveat is to toss the triggers that come with the parts kits. I'm not sure about now but you used to get parts kits with the F/A triggers. Of course the receiver won't be the "3rd hole" NFA violation but constructive intent and whatnot.

Next I'll go into some of the shit said in this thread that is wrong or misleading.

>You don't need to build a whole new rifle, swap out pieces on your misr to make something you like.
While this is true and I recommend the gist of it, AK's aren't AR's. You can't usually swap out the buttstock for example without drilling out the old rivets and pressing new ones for the new stock. It is usually best to go to a range and try out a few variants to see what you like. I loved underfolders until I built one and learned to utterly loathe that shit stock. I sold it and fished further upstream and bought a sidefolder which I liked even less. And then I sold that and just bought an AR because AK's Fucking suck.

>OP this is what people used to do in the 1990s when it was still cost-efficient to import AKs from overseas
Yep, back when you could get surplus 7.62x39 AK's were the shit. Then the surplus dried up and overnight we went to AK-74's. Then Obama snubbed the import of 7n6 and welp, now 5.45 AK's are utterly useless. Thank god I got out of them before they went tits up.

>its probably not exactly legal but you can buy unstamped or partially machined lower receivers (the main gun part of the gun) with no paperwork
Depends on the state. Federally it is legal to make anything that doesn't violate federal law. Making a S/A AK that is within the NFA is legal so long as it is 922r compliant and whatnot. And yes you can buy blanks or 80%s without paperwork anywhere in the US as far as I understand. The ATF says what is and isn't a firearm. At some point the line is drawn between a hunk of sheet metal vs a functioning gun.

>get a buddy to drill some holes in it
This is illegal btw. You can only make firearms if you are the person completing them. Even if someone does it for free they are manufacturing a firearm without an FFL. To make guns for the intent of selling them or distributing them, you have the have an FFL. Some guy in California used to have 80% build parties until the state cracked some heads on this.

>Problem with that is that you can't ever transfer or sell it, unless you wanna go through the endless headache of trying to get the ATF to register a serial number for it.
While you can't make guns for the intent to sell, you can sell homemade firearms. This is another misconception. You can also stamp whatever SN you want into a firearm you made and it is totally legal. The ATF doesn't register SN's to guns the manufacturer does and then the FFL records the transaction. The ATF then procures black books from the FFL on the transactions. Black book logs must be maintained for 20 years after the transaction at the FFL.

>But again, I don't recommend bothering with the headache.

I wasn't sure whether to post this here or on /other/. Apparently crazy motherfuckers used to eat, drink, or suck on cordite back when it was used.

"About three cartridges added to half a pint of water or tea
boiled down to about a gill, when it is of the consistency of thick
molasses or glycerine, and sipped occasionally, makes one feel
like a prince. Taken in this form, cordite makes me want to
tell all my troubles and all I know to any listener. It gradually
produces sleep, the awakening being accompanied by the usual
headache, but the feeling is not quite so bad as I would have felt
had I drunk beer WIth it.
"If beer, say a few pints, is drunk in conjunction with the
above solution, it very shortly makes me as mad as a man oon get ,
without becoming absolutely a raving lunatic. It was while in
this condition that I went over to the station-master at Platrand,
four miles away, dressed in my underclothes and a blanket, and
without boots at midnight, woke him up, and told him if he
would give me a bed for the night I would work his telegraph
instruments for him all day long. I am not fully cognisant of
what I do while in this state, but generally find out about it next
day, sometimes to my great surprise, as it seems hard to believe
some of the antics which I am told I have performed; but the
knowledge of them does not worry me next day, as I feel too bad.
Cordite, no matter how taken or in what form, always gives me
the most terrible nightmares, in fact, everything seems to be in a
chaotic state. As long as a man has cordite in his system he is
more or less insane, although he may appear sane enough. My
eyes feel as if they were jumping from their sockets, and objects
have a dim appearance as long as the headache lasts."

So, uhhh... Anybody try it?
