Hello, /k/.

I'm in the process of building myself a cabin innawoods, and setting up a reasonably sustainable living space for myself. Right now, I still have a regular apartment and job, but I intend to eventually go full hermit in my cabin and avoid heading into town if at all possible.

What I need are incredibly durable and easy to strip/troubleshoot firearms. I don't care how pretty they are, and I'm willing to trade 'comfort' for 'indestructible'.

Effectively, I want some guns that I can bring with me in the woods and that will easily last 10-15 years if need be without me heading into town (obviously with proper maintenance).

I'm not really interested in bringing more than 3 or 4 guns with me either, ideally

  • a pistol/revolver
  • a shotgun
  • a hunting rifle
  • a semi-auto rifle

Bonus points for cheap/plentiful ammo. I intend to get a handpress for reloads but I'm not looking to set up a bench and station or anything.

My recommendations:

Bolt Action Rifle: CZ or Tikka made in a centerfire cartridge of your choice
Semi automatic rifle: AR-15. Cheap parts. Accurate. Reliable. Look into Colt, FN, BCM or Daniel Defense.

As far as shotguns go a pump action Remington or Mossberg will last you forever. However, if you want HARDCORE PREPPERMAN INTENSE SHIT VERSATILITY I'd look into a single shot 12 gauge shotgun. H&R makes some and there are companies that make inserts that allow you to shoot different calibers through the gun and can provide a great amount of versatility from a single firearm.

Well mosin is cheap and will last forever, ammo is cheap and easy to store.

I second an AR, especially innawoods, dat penetration dawg. Get some good ammo. Seperate ammo for defense against critters and criminals.

Shotguns, a side by side.... duh! No but most shot guns are reliable and priced reasonavbly. But if I was hunting I would get a single, side by side, or pump.

Pistols, I'd get a reliable semi auto. Sounds like it's for defense and u want that capacity and reload speed, just get a caliber sufficient to handle what's in your area.

I'd recommend a single shot or bolt 22lr, for small game harvesting. Cheap to buy, feed and maintain, easy to shoot and can put some critters on the table very easily.
I have a chiappa little badger and I lobe it, as does everyone who shoots it. Less than 200 brand new.

You mention the .22, a Savage bolt action would be a great affordable option as they make polymer stock rifles that are very reasonably priced. Some of their models I have seen with iron sights as well.

semi auto rifle? Fuck those... waste of ammunition. Get a lever action in a pistol cartridge, or .22 (if its .22 spring for a BL-22, the throw on them is so low it makes my dick hard) or some big ole shells like .45-70. If you can't hit whatever you're shooting at with a lever you shouldn't be touching a gun.

Semi's fucking jam, And they do waste ammo, we do a lot of varmit control in Alberta and all the tacticool folks with 10/22s can't hit shit and need 2/3 rounds to shoot one gopher. They're reliable, more accurate & fast to shoot if you can actually operate it competently. If you are in a SHTF dealio, conservation is key. You are not fighting a commando unit, or waging war on anight club/movietheater/highschool so you don't need to spam rounds down range like an imbecile. Find a concealed postion, take aim, shoot and then move. You'd be up against the average scrub, and I think a lever would be more than adequate. IF you need something intimidating, let off 5 shots from that 12 gauge in less than 2-3 seconds and horribly maim whatever the fuck is in front of you at 100m.

P.S. the fucking jump from the bolt cycling another round is garbage too, I hate it with a passion. I like tacticool rifles and all but I sure hate what they do to a persons shooting habits.

Also in the event I'm going to be taking a rifle into a building or small enclosed space for whatever reason, I'm gonna take my AR over my bolt or lever hands down. Maybe a shotgun, but only with a sidearm. If you lived in bumfuck Kansas where it's flat as a board and you can see shit 20+ miles away then sure a bolt might be preferable, but I would always have a semi-auto on backup as well.

Regardless, semi auto can be beneficial for multiple targets and or large animals that might take more than one shot to kill. You can get semi automatics that are accurate out to a thousand yards.

I'm in a similar situation to OP.
I've always been a city boy and I have city boy guns:
FNS-9C for everyday carry and the nightstand
Ruger AR-556 for protection in case of chimpout

I'm accurate at the range but untested in any type of field environment. Never hunted anything and don't know much about any guns other than the two I own.

I bought some land in the middle of nowhere that I plan to build something on and move permanently to within in a few years.

I'll definitely be learning to hunt deer for food before I get out there and will need a new rifle for that... but there are also a few carnivores in the area, specifically:
bobcats that average about 40 lbs (18 kg)
mountain cats that can get up to 160 lbs (72 kg)
black bears that can top out over 350 lbs (159 kg)

I don't see the need for a shotgun and would just like a bolt action that won't obliterate a deer but can kill a 350 lb bear with a well-placed shot or two (or maybe not so well-placed... I've never shot at anything while I was scared) if such a thing exists.

I think this sumbitch is beautiful and am leaning toward getting one if I'm not going to be spending anything on a shotgun:

Go with 30-06 or 308. Both are common calibers in America and can easily put down a black bear with good shot placement. With larger game up north like grizzly bears I'd recommend at least a .338 along with a minimum 100 yard distance. Good luck with your property.

Been seeing some things about distance but I'm ignorant. What's the deal? Is it better because the round tumbles at that distance or something? What would happen up close with the same caliber? I mean, I'm not wanting to hunt bear for food or sport... I just want something for the rare instance in which the bear might be hungry and want to hunt me.
The land is pretty densely wooded and I wouldn't ave much chance at a 100 yd shot anyway. Even if I did, at 100 yards, I'd probably rather not engage... was thinking more about it displaying aggressive behavior at a closer range.

I was referring to the 100 yard distance when dealing with large game like grizzlies. They can charge that distance in a few seconds. Then rip you apart in half of that. Not to mention they can take a .308 round to the skull and keep coming at you, hence my recommendation of a rifle chambered in .338 or larger. Although they are usually found up northwest in places like Montana, Alaska and western Canada.

A .22lr and a 12g shotgun would be handy to have. Pretty fucking common as far as ammo goes. Now as far as a pistol goes, 9mm would be handy for the same reasons. I was sorting imagining some surivalist stuff though. Very easy to reload 12g shotgun cartridges and the same with 9mm rounds. It's also very easy to buy cheap bird shot rounds and then make your own buckshot and reload them.

.22 cal pellet rifle - for small game, quiet, simple, reliable

Single shot shotgun - birdshot, buckshot, slugs and you are ready to tackle anything from squirrels to grizzly bears

.357 magnum revolver with 6 inch barrel and a full size 9mm semi auto

SKS - The god of SHTF/bugout rifles. Simpler than an AK or AR15 ever will be. More accurate and more powerful than an AK and can be used to take game including deer. If you can get your hands on an SKS-M - the ones that take AK mags then you will be Lord of the forest.

You can pare that back to probably two guns. A full power 308, 243 or 6mm Swede for larger game in a mauser action that will never break, and a 22lr or 17hmr for small game.

There are plenty of solid guns for the first, I'm actually pretty partial to the Ruger GSR, which is pretty much the definition of a carry always, shoot rarely 100% bulletproof gun but if you were on a budget you could get a surplus Swedish Mauser and it would perfectly fit the bill. The latter can be filled with nearly anything, but if you're not budget limited a takedown with barrel inserts for a couple of small calibres would be ideal.

I can't really see any real reason you'd need a pistol or shotgun, and no semi-auto will last 10-15 years of hard woods use without serious maintenance. There's just too many working parts like springs that require replacement for it to be a true "never needs servicing" rifle. More working parts means more parts exposed to wear.
