Hey all, hope you're doing well /other/

I'm wondering if the people here have experience with kava, and if so, what were your experiences and did you find certain brands were more reliable/better than others?

I've tried a few bags from a local store and it seems to be very hit and miss, some numb your mouth something crazy and seem very stimulating, while others don't seem to do much other than knock me out.

One other thing I was wondering, have any of you experienced any health issues using kava? I'm pretty sure the liver issues were just from other parts of the plant being mixed with the root but info online seems to be very mixed.

Thanks br/other/s

I've tried it a bit with little success. I've tried some extract capsules, chocolate, and recently some root powder strained in water. None of these game much effect, beyond a little mood elevation for a bit. I've heard it is something you might need to keep up on for multiple days to start noticing effects, which could be my issue. Maybe buying a bigger supply of powder and using it consistently would help. I believe people when they say it works, but I haven't experienced it. I think the health issues are from parts other than the root of the plant, if it is just root then it is supposed to be very safe.

is it at least worth it? are the extracts at least cheap enough to make the mild euphoria worth it or is it just overhyped?

does it work better for some people or something? i heard its shit all the time and the occasional guy boasting it

Kava has a reputation for a "reverse tolerance" effect. I got liquid kava tincture from a vitamin store and tried taking it every day. Only started becoming noticeable on the final day. Got nothing I would call "euphoria," just sleepiness and relaxation, like a benzo taken at low doses.

I have some kava bars in my area and have tried their kava "tea" style preparations. I found the effects to be quite pleasant, but I found that the tea itself made me kind of nauseous. Worth trying, maybe getting extract pills would be a good way to avoid the unpleasant taste.

Part of the problem with kava is that there isn't much in the way of regulation, so its hard to know what you're actually getting.

I'm willing to give it one more try. It's cheap and I actually enjoyed the taste of the root powder drinks I made despite hearing how terrible some people find it. Maybe that means the shit I got wasn't good. I hear reports of varying effects, from very positive and enjoyable to extreme nausea and discomfort so it's probably something you just have to give a go for yourself and see how your body handles it.

The recipe you use to make it makes a world of difference. Here's how I make mine using ground kava root:

  1. I use 2 parts whole milk to 1 part water (less "dirt" flavor and the milk contains lecithin, which pulls the kavalactones out into the liquid)
  2. Adding a couple of packages of chai tea powder and sugar to taste goes a long way in taking the edge off the flavor. Kava tastes a little like chai tea anyway, IMO
  3. Blender, lowest setting, for 3-4 minutes
  4. Strain through a metal screen strainer (can be done a couple of times to get rid of more solids if they bother you), pressing the sludge with a spoon to "squeeze" more liquid through the strainer each time, and discard the paste
  5. Chug chug chug. Drink it fast, and on an empty stomach.

Not being a dick here, I made some nasty brews when I first got started brewing potions too... but damn it man, why? You have a dry powder. You clearly do not like it's taste. Just put it in empty 00capsules and swallow them. Even walmart sells 00gel capsules nowadays. Stop putting so much effort into suffering needlessly.

tried it for the first time today
3 tbsp of ground root to 1 cup of cool water, prepared quasi-traditionally using a finely-porous spice bag

definitely felt something, even though its mild
felt...good. no more off-weed jitters (trying to kick that stuff), sociable, mild euphoria gave way to relaxation after an hour

can't say my stomach loved it but I was also snacking cookies in an attempt to to fight the taste
as for the taste, no surprise given what it is. bitter but not disgusting; and it makes your mouth tingle

overall, I enjoyed it. reading that the effects increase as you take it regularly (reverse tolerance) has me intrigued

  1. A lot of kava is weak. Get good Kava powder, noble only
  2. It has a reverse tolerance, like when some people dont get high their first time smoking weed. Try it every night for a week and you will feel it soon enough unless your root is garbage.
  3. Sleep like a baby
  4. Do not mix with alcohol

The kavalactone extracts are legit. Made the same way as some types of hash oil. Tried some last night, potent stuff.
