Any suggestions for getting freelance type work over the Internet? Elance used to be good, but now it's Upwork and a complete cesspit. Freelancer.com is even worse.

Topcoder if you look at the 'challenges', they will often post bounties to fix their site, offering money for writing features. This is a good way to start but you could also simply find businesses where you live and offer to redo whatever technology they're using. For example installing Ubiquity routers and wifi APs, redoing their undoubtedly shit websites, writing something that fixes a problem like automating dispatch delivery drivers via a bot on some chat program etc.

This is a large list of gigs and various remote job plaforms https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1JfNAbUX_lN9K3MCNHO15GJtJ5qpk7H9Cl3xTBwv2FR8/htmlview

There is also TopTal. It has one advantage, where you don't have to worry about collecting money yourself they handle all of that. However the interview is painful. Generally you get a phonescreen and some guy (who when I did it sounded like he was driving around the 3rd world on speakerphone with horns honking in background). They give you two or three tests from Codility. You can prepare for them: https://codility.com/programmers/ and then they ask you to write some feature, which will be easy if you've already written a bunch of features. After the recruiter/interview guy will hilariously set your rate for you, based on where you live, so it will be $45/hr or something but at the time I didn't care. I then lowered by rate to be $5 less than everybody else and collected tons of contracts, most of their customer base back then was AirBnB it probably still is. You work there long enough until you can't stand it anymore and then you parachute into a 'vetted' freelancer scheme, like turtle.ai or https://www.moonlighting.com/

You can also skip all this, and if you are American (I think EU too) and just try triplebyte https://triplebyte.com/ though maybe they hire other countries now, I haven't checked in a year or so.
Finally there is the aggressive freelance style I once employed where you just find something that exists and is popular, and clone it for half the price, like say Zapier plugin for some wordpress thing. Well you just tell potential client that they need Gsuite paid business account and then write the logic there to perform most of Zapier actions, and then sell yourself until they notice and try and have to kicked off the platform.

Oops, forgot to finish the phone screen interview. The guy just confirms you can speak basic english and know basic facts about web programming like some javascript or react questions depending what you put on your application. Note this was a long time ago, who knows how it's changed since then.

Still better than competing with hordes of people from India over the Internet with a comp.sci phds who will work for the same price you basically have to pay each month for groceries alone.

You can create own site or app for smarphones. You can try to use some free site apps like wix or wordpress. But firstly you need to know about type of your site or apps. If you have plan to start online business I want to suggest you to check information about mvp app here https://spdload.com/blog/guide-to-launch-an-mvp/
