We have to talk about louie ck

Now louie is alright but there is something that he said which got me thinking like a dog stuck in the dog door. You see that guy was on a interview and he comes up with this way of looking where "a little white girl doesn't get to complain". He continues on about how when his kid was sick and he got her flavored medicine which she didn't want. "what do you mean no? People are starving to death and you say no!? You don't get to!"

And it hit me, okay she is not starving and that's better than the alternative but in a way, she resembles what society has sacrificed inorder to not starve. That little girl sick but she still thinking about petty shit like the flavor of her medicine, she forever in this headspace where things like that matter. The sacrifice is a clear mind replaced by that of something like a consumer.

So it sounds to me like Lou is pretty much on point with this observation. But I don't know if he's getting at that is creating a consumerist mentality, it's really just a re-telling of the 'first world problems' meme.
Ernest Godgestare - Thu, 29 Dec 2016 16:46:25 EST 2IPvcf8v No.207522 Reply
Well its not really a new point or anything. But consumerism sure has turned around and created a strange culture. And its made some hellish kids thats for sure. Don't think that there was a time prior to industrialization that average people could afford to lavish their child with all sorts of things at a whim.

Consumer culture creates a lot of crying. A lot of give me. Buy me this. I need that. I mean obviously first world problems, but hey there sure isn't any going back on it. Most People would never get up comfort to get away from that. Can only imagine how poorly behaved kids are gonna be in a 100 years.
Rebecca Huzzleshaw - Wed, 11 Jan 2017 22:25:03 EST yJ+BqvQx No.207572 Reply
Consumerism is also the root of Lifestylism, like Trans Culture.
That there's a culture with a lifestyle including body modification and tribal code words and the whole nine yards. It's just breathtaking, the way Consumerism makes people feel so incomplete, and the fact it can even turn a concept like incomplete into a positive or negative thing, the spook of a requirement for completion, a requirement to get at something that can't be got.
That's the mental illness aspect-- that people are killing themselves to get at shit that doesn't exist, or isn't this thing that they think it is.

can we talk about Kant instead?

Here's a little philosophy for you.

>Can we talk about Kant instead?
>He's just a comedian

What makes Kant more-relevant than Louie? As a philosopher, what makes you assume that Kant is more-valuable in terms of philosophizing about than Louie? Especially seeing as Louie is contemporary where as Kant is quite past our time.
Hamilton Duckway - Fri, 10 Feb 2017 11:13:32 EST RilgByUK No.207701 Reply

Kant had a huge impact on modern western thought, ideals and principles. His ideas are still relevant, hell even in legislation like how late in a pregnancy abortion is allowed.

Louie CK is just a comedian that got famous by stating the obvious.

Anyways, I think OP is waaay off point. She's a fucking child, of course she'd think about petty shit. Just as much as the kids who starve think about petty shit as well.

The little girl lives in the first-world bubble, and can't picture anything else because she's young and has never experienced true starvation And I bet none of us here on this board actually have. Whereas the starving kids lives in another bubble and can't properly fathom the bounty first-worlders live in. How is the latter any clearer than the mind-set of the first-world girl?

Louie CK is just a comedian ~who~ got famous by stating the obvious, and through careful emphasis gets laughs out of people - on top of making them think.

The line between comedy and philosophy isn't as clear cut as you think. The line is still there, I will admit that. But that line is fuzzy. Especially when you get to actually good comedy, because the best comedy jabs and cuts and makes you bleed. Keeps your brain going, keeps you thinking.

And philosophy is nothing but thinking about thinking.

The proverbial line between philosophy and comedy is very thin and merely decorated by Kant's color aesthetics

I can follow that. Western society seeks economic growth above all else. It's the unspoken religion. The whole apparatus of society is engineered and re-engineered to create the maximum economic growth. This requires the assimilation and submission of the citizen- a unit containing a predetermined net financial worth- to the total apparatus, which creates and recreates as it pleases, according to the almighty laws of finance.

Sam Hyde is a philosopher in the school of "do not think like this because you will ruin your life and the lives of your loved ones".

The guy literally turned his life in a joke, and he's living in the ruins of it. He's the perfect example of the archetype comedian who takes the joke too far.

Making someone think doesn't make you a philosopher. Neither does observing quirks in our generally absurd culture count. Not by a long shot. At most these people hold more wisdom than the average guy and use humor to get it across.

I mean how big do you think this 'exclusive' club oughta be? Should every guy with a point make fun of the established culture and thus be declared a fucking philosopher? Then stand in the queue mate.

I don't want to get into an argument about what constitutes a philosopher here, but there should be fucking standards.
Safe to say they're gonna remember Kant way beyond Louie CK. Why? Because Kant actually had something worthwhile and timeless to contribute to the canon. Whereas a comedian like Louie just spend 5 min a'quip making fun about human nature with no arguments besides "What he said was funny, and it's funny because it's true lol".

I did say there is a line between philosophy and comedy. A fuzzy line, but a line none the less. Fucking read my post sourpuss.

And my post on Sam Hyde is clearly sarcastic. Sam Hyde has nothing to say about thinking except some bottom-of-the-barrel nihilism.

wait so louis ck white guilts his daughter because she doesn't like a certain kind of medicine? lmao what the hell. I think I've heard about 4 total minutes of his comedy before in my whole life but I don't remember anything like this.

So if Kant was a comedian instead of a philosopher and instead of writing The Critique of Pure Reason he did a comedy routine called The Critique of Pure Reason (that encompasses the same ideas but makes them funny), would you stop referencing Kant as a philosopher?

>Making someone think doesn't make you a philosopher.
What does make someone a philosopher? We all philosophize, even the common man does that. So what makes a philosopher?

Yeah.. he started getting more political. I mean, I like the guy and his work, but I don't like to see him pandering like that.

Dude , he has always been political. You just were too much of a dumb edgy teen to realise it.

Does he normally trash his own kids like that and incorporate it into his standup? pandering or not that seems like weird behavior for a parent, even if he wasn't publicly bragging about it. I don't know much about standup though.
Nathaniel Tillingworth - Tue, 14 Feb 2017 06:29:23 EST d4DXKOh3 No.207720 Reply
He doesn't trash his own children. He trashes everyone, including his loved ones and himself.

Go look up his piece on the disconnect between wanting to be a morally good person and how one lives their life.

The greatest philosophy teacher is he who is most understood and most listened to. Comedy helps with that. Comedy is a tool to those ends. That being said, you get comics like Trevor Noah who try to do this but fail miserably because instead of making quips that encompass some sort of brilliant idea he simply insults anything and everything not liberal with smart-ass comments without ever digging into anything on a philosophical level. It's just, "OH YOU DON'T THINK TRUMP IS A NAZI!? WELL, LOOKS LIKE SOMEBODY NEVER READ 1984 LOLOLOLOL" And then the audience laughs and liberals feels more-secure in their beliefs because someone is making jokes on their side of the argument.

And then there's this little faggot the future immigrant who has to derail the thread as per direct order from his Breitbart mindcontrol overlords.

Political satire is completely different from the kind of general life comedy we're discussing here. One is about straightforward politics. The other is about how humans give form to life, in any and all aspects on all levels.

You completely miss the point, you giant cocksucking faggot.

Every goddamn comedian who has kids complains about them in disturbingly personal and direct ways, to the point that it's a cliche shtick.
John Pockville - Thu, 16 Feb 2017 08:36:14 EST d4DXKOh3 No.207731 Reply
Because giving life is the biggest common thread throughout human culture. Of course every comedian is going to rail on that. Just like jokes about death.

maybe I'm just a weirdo in that I think you shouldn't go out of your way to embarrass and harass your children over things they don't understand for the sake of a comedy bit. perhaps it's unfair to make jokes about every subject and person but leave your own kids out of it. I'm sure it will be good for the children. as I said, I don't know much about standup.

You're fucking stupid if you think Louie uses his children in his jokes to make them look stupid. You fucking retard.

Louie uses his children in his jokes to make US ADULTS look stupid.

Example: his Monopoly joke. He explains to the crowd that he likes to play Monopoly with his 4 year old daughter, and makes her go bankrupt. The last line in the joke goes like this. "Give me all your money. Everything you have. That's MINE now. I own that. It's no longer yours. And now, I'm going to take ALL YOUR STUFF, and use it to destroy your older sister!"

At this point, the crowd knows the joke is no longer about playing Monopoly with children. It's a joke on human society. People use money to ruin other people so they can take their money, and then they use that money they just took from those other people, to ruin even more people so they can take even more money.
