Anyone do this on their own? I was thinking of buying a prebuilt kit then doing it on my own without them after I get the hang of it. I'm wondering if I'm being jewed though the kit is ~$100. Does this seem high? Apparently they skip a few steps with it and it only provides up to 3 batches.

The kit includes everything from container/syringe to substrate, but yeah I'm thinking it's basically a scam since the refills cost ~$70 as well. Am currently looking through the guide you posted. Do you grow your own? Did you succeed on your first try?

Uh, I'm not really sure what you're doing but you should have most of the jars be wet vermiculite and brown rice flour, the top layer being just dry vermiculite. For injecting, just get the needle in as far as possible (obviously through the lid), which really won't be that far

One month later and 2/3 rye bags that I purchased are fully colonized via spore syringe inoculation.

Using bulk unmodified tub tek with coco coir gypsum vermiculite

probably 2 days before I introduce to fruiting conditions

But you can just do shoebox bulk if you're worried about that. Multiple individual 1lb bags spawned to 6 quart dub tubs. Jars are actually easier because you just pressure cook them. Grains take a lot more manual labor to get right.

I purchased my grain but next time I'm making my own and using my own bags. The only real problem is figuring out how to improvise an impulse sealer for the bag.

You don't colonize shrooms, you colonize substrates, well shrooms colonize I mean. If it's the initial inoculation you are talking about on a nutrient rich substrate, that is done in jars or bags, not in monotubs, if you are talking about low nutrient substrate in bulk spawning it is always done in tubs.
