why is carson wentz so good? because even when he's on a date with his high school sweetheart, he'd rather watch game tape on his ipad under the table than pay attention to whatever she is saying.

still, the eagles D is what really impressed in that win. the steelers D isn't as special as it has been in the past, so putting up a bunch of points isn't that big of a deal. shutting down their offense like that was surprising. too bad the birds are about to lose lane johnson for 10 weeks. i guess we'll see how well wentz plays under constant pressure now...

Not a Britbong, a Deutschbag, but that's basically the same for "why are you staying up to watch the Sunday Night Football game", even slightly worse. The short story is that I'm a German-American that started out a 49ers fan that got really salty over Smith getting benched for Kaepernick and switched teams when Smith got traded.

TheMcD !iYk4bFjGwk - Sat, 08 Oct 2016 18:41:15 EST ID:R0sdrtra No.31254 Ignore Report Quick Reply

The short of it is that watching Smith get the shit beat out of him because of a crappy O-line during the Nolan-Singletary years endeared him to me, and now, like an abused puppy, I just want to see him be happy and succeed.

Also, the 2011 divisional round game against the Saints was the first playoff game I ever saw, and the crazy ass finish that game had solidified his place in my heart.

It's referring to the NFL teams Social Media accounts, when they post gifs, videos, vines, facebook stuff that has game footage, not the players themselves, all in an effort to save themselves from declining ratings.
Sophie Hushfit - Mon, 10 Oct 2016 23:58:22 EST ID:bh/BaWKB No.31264 Ignore Report Quick Reply

OH Jesus, I didn't realize that. I thought that them referring to "teams" meant the teams the offending players were on, like a means to have them police their players better instead of strictly fining/punishing the player them self. that's just stupid to try and censor official team accounts during games. What the hell else are those interns going to do while the game is going on?
George Grandham - Tue, 11 Oct 2016 13:19:35 EST ID:wV2/wg6W No.31266 Ignore Report Quick Reply
I clearly have way too much time on my hands, so I wrote this up for myself to get a handle on how I think the playoff race will shake up after the first third of the season. The race for the last AFC wildcard spot is gonna be tight, the AFC South is anyone's for the taking but the Titans are the only team I don't expect the coach or GM of to get fired soon. The Cowboys and Eagles are neck and neck but the Cowboys are getting better every game while the Eagles just lost to a bad team, none of the NFC teams in the hunt for a wildcard spot have a chance though unless something big changes the Eagles and Packers are too good.

East: Pats (C1), Bills (H), Jets (X), Dolphins (X)
North: Steelers (C2), Ravens (W6), Bengals (H), Browns (:💩:)
South: Titans (C4), Colts (m), Texans (m), Jaguars (X)
West: Broncos (C3), Raiders (W5), Chiefs (H), Chargers (X)

East: Cowboys (C2), Eagles (W6), Redskins (H), Giants (X)
North: Vikings (C1), Packers (W5), Lions (H), Bears (X)
South: Falcons (C4), Buccaneers (X), Saints (X), Panthers (X)
West: Seahawks (C3), Rams (H), Cardinals (H), 49ers (X)

(C) Division Champ
(W) Wildcard
(numbers) Seed
(H) In the hunt for a wildcard
(m) Maybe they win their division?
(X) Not a chance

I missed the Bears-Jaguars game, how the hell did Hoyer throw over 300 yards with over a 60% completion rate with no interceptions and just one sack and not throw a single TD? Did the Bears just run the ball three straight times whenever they got in the redzone? Also that 4th quarter Jaguars comeback, holy lord. This Bears team may go 1-15 if they can't beat the 49ers.

lotta ~30 yard field goals. Hoyer has been good but he has no chemistry with Alshon and it showed yesterday. He threw for 300 yards but it took him 49 attempts and they just couldn't make any big plays downfield.

that last touchdown.... fucking awful way to lose a game.

Speaking of college football conference chicanery, is the Big East still going through with adding teams way out West like Boise State and Colorado? I remember reading something about an East Coast conference adding some teams across the goddamned country to their conference because college football is such a disgustingly ludicrous business.
Isabella Pittwell - Tue, 18 Oct 2016 20:37:33 EST ID:Lt1FzKUb No.31301 Ignore Report Quick Reply
Big East as a college football conference is dead; its former members now inhabit the ACC and the American Athletic Conference (AAC). The AAC is a mishmash of castoffs from the Power Five conferences, really. They're better than conferences like the Sun Belt and the MAC, but can't crack any major conferences. The Big East as a basketball conference lives on though, but it's lost a lot of its former prestige with members jumping to the ACC and elsewhere.

College football realignment is ridiculous, and I think it's only going to get worse.
Archie Fangerdale - Sat, 22 Oct 2016 00:50:45 EST ID:bh/BaWKB No.31310 Ignore Report Quick Reply

Ah yeah, the American Conference is what I was thinking of. That travel schedule for those teams is going to be ridiculous with them having to fly across the country. It's pretty retarded to require that from student-athletes.

Also you're right about the impending realignment. Pretty much every pundit is expecting the NCAA Division I Football division to kind of collapse upon itself and come out with like 4 "super" conferences that will funnel champs into the CFP.

Here's the CFL playoff brackets. Conference semifinals are next Sunday and conference finals the following week with the 104th Grey Cup on November 27th.

As much as I don't like the Cowboys, I'll give them credit for how well they've played without Tony Romo. Dak Prescott has really taken the reigns and picking up their defense and having Dan Bailey on my fantasy team is a plus.

The issue is that he traded away his best players and pissed off the whole Eagles fandom and city of Philadelphia.

Can't believe Kirk had to throw that INT and cost the Skins a playoff berth. So frustrating. Time for rebuilding mode now.

And today could very well have been the Chargers' final game in San Diego. Guess we'll find out soon if they'll be moving back to Los Angeles to shack up with the Rams given that they just fired Mike McCoy.

Also the Chip Kelly experiment didn't work for the 49ers and Gary Kubiak is retiring from coaching.

Packer fans are the worst, but I respect Rodgers for what he's done. If he loses the MVP to Brady even though Rodgers turned the team around from 4-6 to 10-6 to win the division with an even shittier cast of white guys brought in from the local supermarkets than what Brady has then that would be a travesty.

Packers fans are the worst because they are unknowledgable homers. this is coming from a Wisconsinite through and through. People here only watch because they know they win a lot and thats it. The San Diego Chargers are moving back to Los Angeles - http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/chargers/2017/01/11/san-diego-los-angeles-relocation-move/96159418/

They're also going to be playing at the StubHub Center, which is where the LA Galaxy play and would make it the smallest stadium in the NFL. They couldn't play at the Rose Bowl because stadium officials voted not to have it house an NFL team temporarily and USC would have had to amend their lease on the Coliseum to allow a second NFL team to play. Apparently though the StubHub Center was always the intended temp stadium for either the Chargers or Raiders and was heavily endorsed by them.

Unless the Chargers go 12-4 and make it to the AFC Championship game next year then I see this becoming a disaster fast. LA fans don't care about or like the Chargers. The only reason anyone in LA ever came down to a Chargers game was to watch the opposing team because they're a displaced fan living/working in LA. Spanos would be smart to change the team's name like how the Browns and Oilers did after they moved.

The sad thing is that San Diego is a great city (even in spite of the Tijiuana garbage seeping in across the border, although Chula Vista kind of works as a shit sponge in that case), but it just doesn't generate the revenue that high profile sports owners in the NFL and NBA want. I guess on the bright side San Diego will be sports-starved in the immediate future until the Padres organization turns things around (which is not likely with their retarded GM) so maybe San Diego can push hard in the next NHL and MLS expansion talks and work out a proposal for a more modest sports arena to house one of those teams rather than getting fleeced for a $1.5 billion NFL stadium.

Speaking to friends and family that have followed the Chargers for the past 2 decades plus, though, the Chargers they loved are dead and buried now. It's going to be hilarious when the StubHub Center is 98% Raiders fans next season when they visit the Chargers, though.

Looks like the Raiders are now submitting their proposal to move to Vegas, too. This one will be interesting because it's not a slam dunk since the owners have balked at Vegas for years. Even with the stadium funded it could be shot down if the other owners do not approve.

The Chargers have now had three different logos in two days - http://www.foxsports.com/nfl/story/los-angeles-chargers-logo-reason-change-san-diego-011417

Clearly they should just keep the current logo as the Rams did.

The thing is that the city of Oakland has made no progress whatsoever to keep the team nor have they come up with a stadium proposal. The only thing standing in the way is if Sheldon Adelson helps to finance the stadium since they haven't come to terms yet. I think the owners will approve the deal if they can come to terms and Oakland doesn't do anything else to try and keep the team from leaving. Otherwise I think that the Raiders will just move somewhere else like San Antonio since they already have an NFL ready stadium in the Alamodome they could use temporarily.

You know what? Cousins needs to prove that he can be the qb for the long term though. He's had all of one really good season. And if you can't at least consistently get to the playoffs? You're way better off crashing the team out for a couple years and building your talent pool.

Cousins will get his payday. And it'll likely be somewhere else if he can't drag the skins kicking and screaming to another playoff berth. But hey, good qbs can consitently make it happen. Look at some of the teams rodgers has even dragged into the playoffs.

I still have my doubts that cousins is really a franchise qb.

With the QB market the way it is right now like the Bears signing Mike Glennon for a 3 year $45 million deal and the upcoming QB class not being very strong, I believe signing Cousins to a long term deal should be the Skins' top priority. Bruce Allen and the Redskins completely fumbled on the negotiations with Kirk Cousins. They weren't gonna give him much more than what he'll already be making under the franchise tag now and don't completely trust him to give a big contract, which I wouldn't if he's only taken them to the playoffs once on a 9-7 record and missed the playoffs on 8-7-1. I'm not out on the street protesting over CTE and NFL ownership dicking over former players, but at this point I'm pretty sure its had a subconscious impact on my enjoyment of football and it seems like it's only going to diminish further as more time goes on and the NFL desperately keeps trying to cover it all up.

It's hard to say what exactly CTE did to him. He seemed to at a young age have an admiration for the gang ("thug life") lifestyle, so did CTE spur him to seek that in spite of his on-the-field success? Or was he already an asshole and the CTE caused him to kill himself instead? It will be interesting if Hernandez becomes a public martyr with people blaming CTE for all of his transgressions. Personally, I feel that CTE amplified his erratic behavior at the end of his life, so definitely caused his suicide, but I'm not so sure if it's to blame for him executing Odin Lloyd. I think Hernandez was just a scumbag human being already, and was going to kill Lloyd regardless of CTE at that point because he viewed Lloyd as a threat to expose his history of illegal activities. On the flipside, though, I can totally see how someone could say it was of his CTE that he was paranoid enough to think Lloyd was a threat and spur him to murder.

I don't think its as cut and dry as any of that, brain damage caused by a hyper aggressive sport and the culture around that (be macho and butch and fuck up the enemy team, make lots of money to make good for the gangsters back home you grew up idolizing) feeds even more aggression and erratic behavior, this doesn't exonerate him, CTE didn't make him pull the trigger, but it probably put him in the state of mind he needed to be to go down that road in the first place.

Same explanation as all the domestic violence in the league, these are people being trained to be violent and its scarring their brains from a young age.

Eli is a bitch but the Giants did him dirty by benching him with 5 games left in a lost season. Let him finish the season and then Joe Montana him in the offseason, don't do it during the season while he's healthy. I'll laugh my ass off when the Broncos trade for him in the offseason and the Bronocs inexplicably make it to the Superbowl again next year. The NFL sucks these days, I hope advancements in CTE testing on living subjects wipes the sport out so I can stop wondering if I should bother caring about football while it's still here.

What the shit? It was totally a catch. When you break the plane of the endzone it's a touchdown, doesn't even matter if someone knocks out the ball with their own cock, it's already a touchdown at that point. They horribly misinterpreted the rule by claiming he "didn't have control" which is fucking retarded because he turned and did a textbook "football move" to get into the endzone and the damn ball doesn't even move until it makes contact with the ground.

I can't into timestamps but Capers got fired like right as you posted this, I think.

Also, Raiders fired Del Rio because the got Gruden with a godfather offer to let him damn near run the franchise. Guessing Del Rio will be hired by Elway to replace Vance Joseph, who got royally fucked in the ass by Elway. Here's hoping Chicago hires Joseph to be their next head coach now that the corpse of John Fox is finally being laid to rest. Also Detroit finally fired Jim Caldwell while Hue Jackson and his 1-31 record is laughing his ass off.

It was pretty close to when I posted but there'd also been rumblings that it was all but done following the shitshow in Detroit. What's crazier is the news that came out right after that Ted Thompson is gonna step down as GM.

Not really surprised though honestly, dude was talking about how he wanted to step down and go back to being a scout as far back as two offseasons ago. Hopefully now we can get someone who's more willing to take risks on big FAs, cause the Packers are at a point where the exclusively draft and develop mentality isn't going to get them another superbowl with an aging Rodgers. I just hope none of the FAs try and pull stupid shit like Martellus Bennett, but that situation was kinda an anomaly.

Oh, and while it's only the 14th pick this year, this is the highest the Packers have drafted since 2008 I believe, they really need to get a good hit with this pick.

10 years and $100 million for Jon Gruden? Either the Raiders are in over their heads or they seem really confident in him turning the team around.
Charles Caffingwill - Sat, 06 Jan 2018 10:26:19 EST ID:X9gfWgdF No.31922 Ignore Report Quick Reply

Well, Gruden is the man. He studies the game. He knows every college player and what they bring. He knows every in and out of most NFL players. Dude is extremely talented and I've been waiting for him to come back and I knew it would take a lot of money, but I wasn't expecting 100 million. But good for him. Raiders are getting much more than a head coach here, BUT I'd say the office has to leave him the fuck alone. Let him draft guys etc, let him run this team and I'd say Oakland will be beast mode in a few years (not that they are complete shit now).

Romo also reminds of Gruden in the way that when you listen to him call a game, he's too smart to not be a coach (head or otherwise) somewhere. But I actually love Romo on tv for this reason so I hope he doesn't leave, but I'd be willing to be he's on a team in some capacity in the next year or so (whenever his cbs contract expires).

Lastly, thank you Bengals (never thought I'd say that, I feel kinda sick) for keeping the Ravens out of the playoffs. That was so awesome. Fuck the Ravens and fuck their stupid fans. I love it.

I don't dispute Gruden's track record as a coach and he built two teams that ended up meeting in the Super Bowl though I'm surprised the Raiders have a lot of confidence in him to give him that huge of a contract.

And speaking of the Bengals, I'm surprised they gave Marvin Lewis a contract extension but I guess Mike Brown wants to keep the status quo despite how mediocre they've been and haven't won a playoff game under Lewis. Though I am glad they knocked the Ravens out at least.

Still foles is up there with keenum. He just was thrown into the season. He's no wentz but he can get the job done and make all the plays they need him to make, and has playoff experience. His confidence should be up now. Vikings are gonna have to play against the best performing home defense in the NFL, in an open stadium on real grass in a hostile environment. This is a pretty much equal matchup. Qbs are a big factor but the eagles were never a one dimensional team this year. They were amazing all around and have top tier coaching staff and are serious contenders to go all the way.

I mean as commentators how can they not praise the single greater QB in the entire sport’s history? Dude’s already broken all the records, any more wins is just him setting the bar higher at this point and he’s not even announced retirement. One loss every once in awhile is good, especially when you’re so good that all people can possibly do to rationalize your team’s streaks is claim you cheat. Now, when they go undefeated next season like every other year they wanted to clean house, people can bring up this loss to help themselves feel better as they go to the superbowl again.

Our Lord and savior wanted Nick Foyles to win, but if Tom Brady would try and defer that it's on him that's obviously at fault. Praise the Eagles.

And to add, everyone knows Brady is great. Even I can admit that after they came back on my Falcons last year. But to verbally blow the man when there are two teams playing (not to mention the Eagles only lost the lead ONCE the whole game and had a shootout with Brady himself and came out on top despite being the underdogs against Brady's war machine and no one giving them a chance) is silly.

True but them not praising Brady would be the same thing the rest of the nation has to say in their own household’s commentery. It stirs people up, they know that, and they know it keeps viewers in suspense to be reminded of Brady’s possible comebacks in those last moments. Gotta keep those viewers interested.

I can understand that logic, but at least Michaels was somewhat impartial. Collingsworth was all over the Pats dick. It was really grating. I was considering putting it on mute.

A good game though, like a really good game. Defense on both sides was complete ass though. Foles really shined tonight.

Honestly as a New England resident who grew up there I really glad to see them lose for once and prove they’re fucking human. I haven’t watched their season games in years because its just a given they blow through sometimes. In the same way fans get tired of their home teams losing all the time you can get tired of them winning all the time too. Me and my buddy were messaging each other about how much we hoped for a loss just so we could enjoy all our families and friends getting upset about it. Like wtf how many rings do they want after a whole hand is already wearing one on each finger, I can understand people hating on them. Conspiracy theories is where I draw the lime though because beig top dawg requires skill and to disregard all those records and undefeated seasons and unreal comebacks with a conspiracy theory is just laughable. I mean argue against the guy if youve got someone better in the league to name but if you cant even compare skill and just have to pull “cheater cheater pumpkin eater” antics then its sad.

Good for Philly, their crowds are fun and they deserved the win, even if Brady was injured those two teams in that game COMBINED for the most yards in NFL history.

I see a lot people say the Eagles got help from the refs when the Pats had so many PIs not called against them while the Eagles had maybe 2 legit penalties called against them.

They are really salty for a team that won quite a few Super Bowls. All this talk about coming back with an undefeated season (doubt.jpg) and coming back with a vengeance (They almost lost Jacksonville of all teams) and that the Eagles won because Brady was hurt (the Eagles lost about 5 star players, including their star QB.)

I will 100% give Brady his props hands down. He's an elite QB at the highest level and it will be years before someone takes his top spot, but let's be real, do you think the Patriots would do well with their backup as much as the Eagles did? Like, on the level.

You’d be surprised man. Thats how they play. Brady having an injured throwing hand is not going to sit well with him over this loss, and you can Bet they will be out to make a point after losing when they weren’t at their best. I see you enjoy comparing Apples to Oranges what with the Eagles also having not had their best players, but the Eagles aren’t the team known for going undefeated throughout entire season’s effortlessly whenever they choose to. Pats are going to come back hard, thats for sure. Ive seen it happen for years.

People are eager to hope they be sore losers and give up, but we’ll see next season.
Nell Febbletudging - Sun, 04 Feb 2018 23:30:19 EST ID:NYnqCSxD No.32016 Ignore Report Quick Reply
Well, technically, Brady went from second string to first when their original first string QB got injured and ever since that we’ve seen them winning with what was a back-up. I dont think its common for any team to do what the Eagles did but thats what having a failsafe is all about. Smart coach for having such a good backup lineup tbh.
Edwin Pockway - Sun, 04 Feb 2018 23:34:04 EST ID:fi/0xBEB No.32017 Ignore Report Quick Reply
The Pats have never given up, ever after losing a Super Bowl. I have literally no idea who in their right mind thinks that.

Will they come back and make it to the playoffs? Don't doubt that at all.

Undefeated? That's really a stretch with the AFC being strong again. You guys can smoke some of the NFC teams just fine (seriously, 2/3 of the conference is shitty). If Jacksonville plays next year as hard as they did this year, they can be real contenders, and you can't rule out the Steelers.

>the Eagles aren’t the team known for going undefeated throughout entire season’s effortlessly whenever they choose to.

The Pats only did it once and didn't win when it mattered. But if they do it next year, i'll eat a delicious meal and salt it majorly

And to add, it's not like you guys went down without a fight.

You all had an hell of an offensive showing (well both teams did, but that's not the point i'm making)

Losing the super bowl isn't the end all be all. Pats won it 5 times, which is more than what, 29 other teams can say? They just need to shake it off, and come back next year, just like every other team who didn't win.

Just don't become the new Browns, that would be really bad.

The eagles have proven to be an elite team start from finish season and post season. With injuries healing up for next season, and some potential moves being made the depth will be added. Its more likely the eagles get another than Brady tbh

Reminds me of when Bill Belichick decided not to be the Jets head coach to become the Patriots' head coach instead. I guess they gave Josh an offer he couldn't refuse and possibly a head coaching position in the future.

It's definitely interesting. Like you said, thjere's the parallels to Belichick spurning the Jets when he was going to finally leave Parcells' shadow. The weird thing is that apparently McDaniels changed his mind after a meeting with Belichick, not Kraft, so I dunno if Belichick can guarantee McDaniels is the head-coach-in-waiting for when he retires or leaves the Patriots. I've gotta think Luck's health had to play a part in the decision, though, because not too many former coaches get second chances in the NFL after failing miserably like McDaniels did the first time around.

I guess the Patriots offered him more job security and stability for his family and wouldn't have to move. I know Willie McGinest denied that McDaniels' decision was influenced by a potential future head coach position but who the hell knows. And now Frank Reich is the Colts' new coach, maybe he can help Andrew Luck as a former QB and backup to a Hall of Fame QB like Jim Kelly.

Great pick-up for the Vikings considering they lost both Keenum and Bridgewater and just had whatever's left of Bradford out back in a shed. He might regress in year 2 or 3 of that contract, but as a "win-now" mentality he's should be even better than Keenum was last year. Short of catastrophic injuries the Vikings have to be the favorites in the NFC North and to make the NFC Championship game again.

I could see the NFC North being a bloodbath this year. Obviously the vikings are favorites, but I'm not so sure they'll be any better (or even as good) as they were last season. In my opinion I think the Packers have been making the right moves so far this offseason, and with a healthy Rodgers and new defensive scheme you don't have to be as biased as I am to think they have a very good chance of taking back the division title.

Then of course there's the Lions who look like they're one solid runningback away from being able to make a deep playoff run. As for the Bears I don't buy that Trubisky is the real deal and I'm convinced they're gonna be the only shitty team in the NFC North this season.

Fuck I miss Jordy so much already

Bears and Lions will be the shits this year. Packers will likely compete for a Wild Card spot and finish 10-6 as long as Rodgers stays healthy. Vikings are legit scary for the first time in years, though. Even an MVP season by Rodgers won't be able to make up for the rest of his team being crap, but Rodgers is the best QB in the league so the Packers at least have a chance because of that.

I wouldn't necessarily say the rest of the team was crap, Hundley just really was that atrocious of a QB. I think Pettine as the new DC will show that there is definitely talent on our defense that was being misused in Capers' scheme, which the game had clearly passed by long ago.

He really seems to have a good shot to at least get the starting job for now, the CFL passing game is very different from the NFL and while he'll have to learn it from scratch it probably skews closer to what he's good at. More importantly the Ticats don't have a single other even CFL starter caliber QB on the roster, his biggest competition is probably Vernon Adams who got traded out of Montreal who didn't think he was good enough to be one of the 5 guys they have competing for their starting job.

You know shit's bad when even Superman is scared of this scenario. If it's found that McCoy had a hand in this, and he may well have, then he deserves whatever he gets from the league and the law. He's innocent until proven guilty until then, though.

The assailant came specifically for jewelry McCoy had given her in the wake of a break up and failed attempt to evict her. It's pretty damning. I'm all for IUPG, but this type of thing isn't unheard of (Rae Carruth). Vindictive women are capable of a lot, but I don't think this lady was doing the Jim Carrey from Liar Lair "kickin' my own ass" bit. Instead of talking about being scared of women Superman should be talking about how much he'd like to really have those powers so he could fuck up the guys who have/are ruining his ability to be flirt comfortably.

It'll probably come out that he set up the robbery because he's an idiot, but there's still the chance that she set this up to get back at him. They're already going through an ugly break-up where she's refusing to leave the home until a court orders her to do so (which is so totally a dick move for any tenant), and in July McCoy put all of her belongings in the driveway to see if that would work in getting her to leave for good (it didn't), and also stripped most of the security system at the home to further try and get her to leave. He also said to police when they showed up during that July incident that he was worried she might try something because of how serious domestic issues are for NFL players currently.

But yeah, most NFL players are dumb as rocks and don't have college degrees for a reason, so Occam's Razor pretty much says he got fed up and orchestrated some sitcom-level clownshow robbery. Still, though, until more facts come out it's possible that she set up the clownshow robbery because she knew that the public would immediately think he did it and inept Roger Goodell might suspend McCoy for the beginning of the season before the investigation is even over.

A) Its older then the NFL, so its really the NFL doing different for the sake of different.

B) NFL rules suck. They slow the game WAY down. CFL is a much faster game and way better for it.
Sidney Surringhall - Tue, 31 Jul 2018 23:07:07 EST ID:zuKJM38N No.32407 Ignore Report Quick Reply
It's not the rules. Americans don't watch anything perceived as second rate and really just want their NFL and NCAA, with some states probably having high school programs and/or districts that do better attendance than lesser professional teams/leagues.

Arena rules aren't to blame for the AFL dwindling. XFL's action-driven rule modifications were a draw but weren't enough to keep viewers. The CFL even expanded into the States before, a US-based team won the Cup, and Americans weren't interested.

The original AFL and USFL only gained traction because they could compete with the NFL for talent, and even that didn't legitimize them to a lot of fans. The AFL (with identical rules) had a much more exciting product thanks to revolutionary playcalling, and the best it could do was call a truce and get absorbed by the senior league.
Jim Powers - Wed, 01 Aug 2018 11:41:45 EST ID:FfFzPnLz No.32409 Ignore Report Quick Reply
Americans are interested in Spring football. The first game of the XFL showed that. The thing is the XFL didn’t make enough of an impression to keep those millions of viewers from Game 1. The extreme and sexual marketing of the league, not to mention Dwayne Johnson appearing in character as the Rock, made it seem too much of a Busch league depending on gimmicks to be interesting. Americans want heavy hitting highly competitive football. The XFL and UFL couldn’t deliver that.
Charles Worringdot - Wed, 01 Aug 2018 13:10:10 EST ID:jO6Kwl+A No.32410 Ignore Report Quick Reply
I mentioned the USFL (United States Football League, 1982-1986) not the UFL (United Football League, 2009-2012), which is so historically insignficant as to not merit mention. The USFL, in addition to competing with the NFL for players, started and found success as a spring league. Moving to the fall against the NFL is part of what killed it.

The season, rule set, and even "heavy hitting/highly competitive" don't matter as evidenced by all the examples I've given. CFL is a great brand of football and doesn't get a sniff in the States. AFL was more exciting and heavy-hitting than the NFL, birthed some of games great rivalries, and still couldn't overcome them. USFL could own the spring because the talent legitimized it, but had it not had been able to sign elite college players away from the NFL no one would've given a shit. Going head-to-head against the NFL just served to reinforce in people's minds the league's second-tier status.

Like I said, Americans don't care about football leagues that feel second rate. That's the long and short of why even established ones like the CFL don't catch on here.

People want to root for the home team. Why the fuck would anyone have a rooting interest in a team from some place they can barely place on a map? People like their high school teams cause they actually have a connection to them.

For Americans to watch the CFL, they're going to have to do the same thing that made the NFL so popular to begin with: make it easy to bet on and it's going to have to go up against nothing on TV (and to a lesser extent, a bigger league should have some major blunder, like the 94 mlb strike). This formula is working for growing the premiership in the US as well. It's like Saturday morning cartoons for degenerate gamblers and alcoholics.

Meh, the spectre of various "gates" will be enough to make history raise its eyebrow at their GOAT-ness. Not to mention that along with cheating they've needed an unprecedented rule interpretation (tuck rule), rule change (hitting a QBs legs), and the combined and protracted incompetence of the rest of the AFC East to get and maintain this run.

Not saying they haven't been great, but ill will and suspicion have impacted how a lot great teams and athletes have been viewed in hindsight. There's enough of each around the Belichick era to ensure any claims made about it will get at least one scoff anywhere outside of WEEI's broadcast range.

Brown's longevity and importance to the game of football make him, imo, the GOAT. Lombardi was a great coach, no doubt, but his offense was one note and archaic by the late sixties. He also didn't seem to be willing to change in his final year in Washington, so if he had lived longer, I don't think he would've had much success and it would've tarnished his legacy.

I'm a Cowoys fan, so I prefer Landry over Lombardi, but Lombardi always had our number. I can't argue that.

It’s really makes little sense to start Tyrod. All he has on Baker is experience but the Browns won’t be any better putting him on hold. If you’re going to lose (or tie) they may as well give Baker the experience and get him ready for the future.

Yeah I agree. Tyrod is a C+ or B- QB at best. He would be much more of a asset to the team supporting baker and being ready as a good back up. He has a good personality and seems like a good locker room guy who could help baker grow as a person/football player. If your not gonna start baker you might as well lose on purpose to get him another 1st overall pick next year like a solid LT or center.

The new roughing the passer rule is the NFL trying to make defensive players alter the laws of physics and I bet if this keeps up, they’re gonna have to change it like they did with the catch rule. Not surprised Clay Matthews is pissed considering he got penalized for it 3 times this season already when he was only penalized 4 times for it in his entire career before this season.

The game changes as time goes on, and it usually changes to benefit the offense. As long as the calls are consistent, it's not a big deal. When I was growing up, there were few flags for PI, but here we are today.

Either Darrell Royal or Woody Hayes said, "Three Things Can Happen When You Pass and Two of Them Are Bad". That was true in the 60s. It's not anymore though. Since then, you can realistically get a PI flag. Now, you can realistically get a roughing flag. Scores go up, ratings go up. Crotchety old guys complain about the rules. It's all a cycle.

Until the rules start making it so you're barely playing tackle football when it comes to the QB.

At what point do rule changes stop being okay for you? Because personally this shit is becoming hard to watch.
This is the flipside of these new RTP calls. Mike Daniels has Cousins, but believing he's thrown lets up to not get called for roughing(touching) the passer. Damned if you do, damned if you don't I suppose.

What exactly is Clay supposed to do differently here? The refs alleged that Matthews used a "scoop technique" (which was actually just Cousins' own momentum). That call literally changed the outcome of the game, Cousins had been picked off and there was slightly more than a minute left on the clock.

So call me a crotchety old guy all you want I couldn't really care less, this shit is absolutely a big deal.

You seriously sounds like my dad's friends complaining about pass interference calls or the 2 pt conversation when I was younger. Or more recently when they changed the kick off rules. They eventually got over it. Hopefully you do too.

Anyway, it's not my game. I don't set the rules. I don't play. I don't care what the rules are - they get changed almost every year. If you don't like rules changes, maybe football isn't the sport for you to watch. The game is so different from the mid-90s, let alone the 60s.

>This is the flipside of these new RTP calls.
lol. Don't blame the rules cause that d lineman can't play whistle to whistle.

>What exactly is Clay supposed to do differently here? The refs alleged that Matthews used a "scoop technique"
Not use a scoop technique (per the rule that everyone has to play by now, including Eric Kendricks)? Go back and cover the pass if he can't handle the new rule? Tell his coach to pass more so the other team is more likely to get penalized? Bitch about it after the game? Good teams and players adapt to new rules. Maybe it takes time, but Clay is a good player. I'm sure he'll catch up.

Each year the football audience does not want to stomach as much violence. Superstar players become more popular and human to us. But football is a inherently violent sport.

Before the forward pass was introduced there were 20 deaths in the 1905 college football season. Sometimes rule changes are good other times they are not.

The roughing the passer calls are already gone and went against everything that was football. On Thursday there were no calls and some big QB hits. With those calls a defensive rusher cannot do his job. I think it was Dexter Manley who said when you play football you should feel as the man across from you just raped your grandmother. I personally love the violence in football and hockey and sad to see that as they become more popular the new squeamish fans cant handle their favorite QB or WR getting laid the fuck out.

>Play the game the right way. You're responsible for the penalties you commit.
THAT'S THE FUCKING ISSUE HOLY SHIT. Nobody knows how they're supposed to tackle the QB anymore, and the NFL has been incredibly inconsistent with this bullshit. One minute they're saying Clay's sack on Cousins was textbook RTP and that it's going to be on their teaching video for what a RTP call is, the next minute the competition committee is saying Clay's hit was fine and the play is nowhere to be found on their teaching tape.

And I'm gonna go ahead and stop you right there before you or anyone else hand waves and dismisses me as a homer. I already said Kendricks' sack on Rodgers was clean and didn't deserve a call, and last weekend a Dolphins lineman's season literally ended from him tearing an ACL landing awkwardly to avoid a RTP call on Derek Carr. You know what Carr said? That he wished the guy HAD landed on him.

Ties are stupid. Old set up was stupid.

Old: Sudden death first to score of any kind wins (safety, TD, FG) 3 times outs. 15 min.

New: first team to receice must score a TD or kick team must get safety. If field goal is kicked other team gets shot at possession. If another fg is kicked game keeps going and is in sudden death. Game results in tie once OT period ends and no score. 10 min 2 timeouts.

Old set up was really dumb because if you received you only needed about 40 yards to win game and tds were pointless. Thats why they changed. Honestly i think there should never be a tie and they should keep playing until someone wins. They changed length of overtime for player safety because they felt 75+ min of play was too long.

And obviously I disagree that the flag, and by consequence this new rule did nothing to change the outcome of the game. There were a large number of things that could have gone differently in that game that would have changed the outcome, as it is with all tie games. That flag nullifying the interception by Jaire with less than a minute and half left in the game was absolutely one of them.

For player safety and to minimize ties, the old system was better. A coin toss, kicking, and defense come into play long before the 60 minutes is up. They are as much elements of the game as a touchdown is. Changing the rules and nature of play because of a minority of whining fans (muh overtime, muh quaterback) is pissing off the silent majority.

There are no ties in baseball and there shouldn't be any in football. Just keep playing. Players fucking hate ties. Especially in the NFL its basically a loss. Try 34%. It was nowhere near as bad as it is made it out to be. It was very much a minority of fans that complained about the fairness of sudden death overtime, as most people have the capacity to understand the notion of "sudden death," and because the vast majority of OT games ended with both teams possessing the ball at least once. Changing the OT rule begat the recent shortening of OT to 10 minutes, which has only led to more ties. It's a rule change that reflects the times, because rather than look to their team to get good enough in all 3 phases of the game to win in regulation or at least prevent or engineer a winning OT drive, people begged for a rule change. Now it's here and people still aren't satisfied and want to tweak it more, as usually happens when a move is made for craven reasons.

They have a tie once every five or six years. Just cause they had two this year doesn't make it a problem. Don't be a prisoner of the now. The only thing that should be changed is that the teams should start at the the 35 yard line in OT.

Him whining about ties despite their still relative rarity and you suggesting further rule tweaking just prove the point that the NFL should have left OT alone. There's no pleasing people, and it's not as if the league itself had any designs on changing it before social media took complaints that were once wholly ignorable and turned them into top of the agenda issues for a commissioner who's more than willing to fuck the sport up if it means people who don't even really like or know the game will stay tuned in.

If Super Bowl 51 ended with a field goal it would of been lame as fuck. The only Super Bowl that went to OT and I'm glad it was under the new rules. Just make it a 10 minute quarter 3 times outs and highest score at end wins. No first TD or sudden death. If falcons had a chance they prob could of got a TD too and maybe their D would of finally stepped up and got a turnover.

Source for that 34%? I remember hearing it was much higher. Not 90% but over 50

>Kareem Hunt caught on video pushing and kicking some woman

Honestly if this went to court it would probably be thrown out. He pushes her, she punches him in the face. He comes back out, pushes another guy into her, she falls down and he kicks her in the shin. This is some pre-school / drunk shit. But the NFL will probably go after him pretty hard.

Now maybe Aaron Jones will get more than 12 carries a game.

FUCK that was so frustrating to watch after JuJu breaks free and gets the ball all the way downfield with no time left.

>Browns fire Hue Jackson
>People seriously rush to his defense and claim firing him will be detrimental to Baker's development.
>Browns have now won more games in the month after Hue Jackson was fired than Hue Jackson has one in his entire career with the Browns
>Bengals haven't won a game since acquiring Hue, sliding to worst in AFC North

>Falcons get blown out because they're a trash team this year and is wasting Julio, who'll probably want out of his contract at the end
>Eagles/Cowboys is a game of Refball, and the Eagles lost on a god damn fluke

Fuck Atlanta, I hate that I am a fan of this team.

Fuck Dallas because they can't stop talking about Super Bowls they won back when the Sega Genesis was still a thing and act like their hot shit, even though they haven't done shit since then.

Fuck the refs because they are legit terrible.

Yeah what an embarrassment. Alex Smith gets Theismann'd and Colt McCoy also goes down and now we're stuck with two never-were QBs. Adrian Peterson is like the only good thing about the Redskins offense right now.

Washington should have gone heavy drafting weapons on offense like 3 years ago. Their defense is okay but they can't score for shit, their best WR was T. Pryor who played QB in college. Bad sign.

Looks like Todd Gurley's knee is fucked. Would suck if his career ended this soon.

Yeah their WR corp is not that great outside of Josh Doctson, That's probably the weakest part of their offense.

The implosion of the Pittsburgh Steelers made watching another Patriots-won season worthwhile. If the Raiders can do it and still fill other holes they have, they should get Le'Veon Bell too. Gonna be weird having Ravens/Browns be the marquee AFC North match-up after all these years.

All the Talent in the world won't help the Raiders when Gruden refuses to use plays made after 1995

a lot of people across the country are going to start acknowledging that your lousy franchise looks a lot less lousy, but nobody outside ohio is jumping on the browns bandwagon.

Hard to gauge the Ravens atm, but if Lamar Jackson becomes a better thrower then I still like Baltimore to win the north. It's good to see the Browns put a team together that can crack .500, but they're still the Browns. If they don't get in their own way the refs will.

If Alex Smith's career is over, I guess Case Keenum or Colt McCoy is our next best option then. They just need a better wide receivers corps and offensive line. I also hope Landon Collins is worth the $86 million they're paying for.

Well now the Jets got Bell and with more guaranteed money.
