American Patriotism is very much embedded in the fabric of sports hence all the military pagaentry especially for a big game like that. Apparently now the NHL is open to doing more games at military academies like at Air Force and Army’s stadiums.

Interesting read, thanks for sharing. Makes me worried, the Rangers have a couple of prospects on that team that are fairly highly touted. They are expected to come over in a couple of seasons, hopefully they are the real deal and not over rated because they are on a favorable team.

FINALLY
After six fucking years I get to watch the Devils play playoff fucking hockey again, I've missed it so much. This match-up with the Lightning has the potential to be a great one, too. Devils swept the season series so I'm at least sure we'll be able to keep up with Tampa.

In fact, a bunch of these match-ups in the first round look awesome. Pens-Flyers rematch from 2012 and the Sharks-Ducks series are going to be brutal.

The league has no one to blame but themselves for being in that lose-lose situation. Bettman insists on a case-by-case review of this shit.

The Department of Player Safety is a fucking joke. All they've done in terms of "player safety" since Shanahan went to the Leafs has been giving the players laying illegal hits to the head/jumping into a check a suspension amounting to a slap on the fucking wrist. They don't give a goddamn sliver of time to the safety or health of the player on the receiving end of that hit.

Wilson's skates left the fucking ice to make that hit, he ended up IN THE BENCH. What the hell is the difference between him and Raffi Torres?

Not sure about their arena status, but it won't matter for the next round of expansion because Seattle's practically a lock. A city like Houston will end up poaching a Canadian team before QC gets a new one.

Quebec City already built the Videotron Centre ready to go for an expansion or relocated team. The issue is the value of the Canadian dollar vs. American dollar, which is what hurt Quebec City’s bid last time and why Las Vegas got a team. Seattle is already a lock for being the next expansion team so relocation is the next best option for Quebec City. However, Houston would probably get preference since they would already have a solid ownership in Houston Rockets owner Tilman Fertitta and it’s the largest market currently without an NHL team.

Yeah I figure if Houston or another US city gets one of the Canadian teams that Bettman is pushing to upgrade their stadium situation then it'd be kind of obligatory for the league to move a struggling US team the other way eventually.

Vegas was gifted the most generous expansion format in the history sports, when the WHA merged with the NHL they stole all of their best players to be redistributed among the original NHL teams and then let the WHA teams create themselves through expansion draft with the last picks of every round, after 15 years of abject pointless misery as these AAA level teams pretended to be real professional sports franchises they just outright stole the teams too.

Fuck Vegas, fuck feelgood stories on ESPN for burgerfucks who don't even care about Hockey, yeah lets see this team have such an amazing fanbase when they aren't handed a playoff team on a silver platter.

>Vegas was gifted the most generous expansion format in the history sports

And were still 500 to 1 to get here. Don't be salty. This is still a bunch of journeymen, long shots, and past-their-prime guys who weren't deemed worthy of being protected by their prior teams. Nobody expected this. That probably makes it sting more if you're a Canadian or a Jets fan, but if you appreciate the game you can appreciate how well they're playing.

If hockey didn't expand into a non-traditional market I probably wouldn't have become a fan, so I can't relate to the whole feeling of being robbed or that people can't love their hockey team just because they didn't grow up with the sport. I can't speak for Vegas, but I was living in Nashville when we got the Predators. Even without immediate success we took to the team and game quickly, and it doesn't surprise me that the fans back there are as passionate as they've become.

Stanley will come back one day home, Canada. You can't really blame it if it wants to take a trip to Vegas.

That's what passes for passion in Bettman hockey cities? I remember thinking a lot during their last series about how lifeless the crowd is when there wasn't a country music star being paraded in front of them.

I don't want to be shitty, any other year, any other outcome I'd be happily rooting for Vegas, but I'm Winnipeg born and raised and all I want to do is burn this league to the ground.

Imagine the Green Bay Packers had all their players poached by the rest of the league and were then told to assemble a roster through the draft with the 32nd pick, then after they bottom out and become the Cleveland Browns they're sold and moved to London. Eventually though hey Green Bay is a great football town they deserve a team, so the Jaguars get moved there and renamed the Packers, the London Knights get to keep all the old Packer's records and titles and shit though. So now its a few years after that and the new Packer's are the best team in football making a title run and reinvigorating the community but they lose in the NFC championships to the new expansion Tokyo Samurais who the league has invested 5 years of planning into ensuring their success to capitalize on the untapped non-traditional football market in Japan.

It's a gutpunch and I don't fucking care how much Vegas thinks they love hockey, it's not part of their national heritage and local mythology, they didn't get swaddled with Bobby Hull Jersies.

That's because the Jets owned them at Bridgestone, tbh. It's undeniably a great fanbase, every guy who's played there attests to it, but that heritage and bond with you guys and the Jets is way different, I get that. Just from a mindfuckery aspect I'm glad the Preds lost to 'Peg instead of the expansion team, and if it had happened that way I'd probably be cursing everything myself.

Its easy to see why, and its not becase Bettman is screwing them, or that Canada sucks or anything. Its because the Canadian team's loyalty is second to none. This allows shithouse owners to spend no money on the teams, and shake down cities for non-stop new arenas. Hell, look at Calgary and the fact the Flames ownership basically has stopped running the team to 100% focus on getting a replacement for the Saddledome. In Montreal you have Moose-piss Beer Tycoons the Molsons content to rake in so GM Bergevin can put his Quebec Nationalism above the team and force Quebec only players and office. Ottawa has an owner who when he isn't focused on boycotting Russia, is blaming the fans for everything wrong with the Sens.

Its a shit-fucking-show.

Yeah, it's great match up sentimentally, especially for someone with no rooting interest.

I'm going with the Knights in six, but I'm pulling for the Caps and for another seventh game. The long wait for the fans and Ovie makes DC hard to not get behind. Vegas has just been a buzzsaw though, and Washington is still gonna be feeling the results of that game- especially DSP, Oshie, and Wilson. Caps really laid it all on the line and skated their asses off, so if they have enough left in the tank and can summon up what they had last night for 12 periods then they can definitely win.

Fleury and Holtby is a push right now. Both are on fire and are getting great help from their skaters, so goals will be at a premium. I'm expecting Vegas to get more PP opportunities, and that and DC's fatigue to be the deciding factors. Trotz better make sure all his guys tie down their jerseys.

I absolutely can't stand Ovechkin. I've, personally, never really cared for the Capitals.

...But they do deserve that Stanley Cup. They've tried too hard for too long.

Granted, Vegas winning the Cup would be a fantastic cindarella story as well.

Being from Buffalo (which, right now...feels like eternal suffering), I'm honestly split between "who I think" is going to win.

Caps actually making past the second round impressed me. Shocked me. I honestly thought Pittsburgh was going back for a third time. It's now or never for the Caps. Can you imagine if they lost in the Final? Ovechkin might as well be on suicide watch after the fact. I'd even feel bad for him.

Vegas? Well...what's not to like about 'em? (Actually, disregard that question). I personally want Vegas to win. They deserve to win just as much as Washington does. Some folks may not see it that way. But they do. They really fucking do.

Aside from Fleury, VGK consists of the "misfit outcasts" (who just so happen to have the best goalie in the league) of the NHL. They're in the Stanley Cup Final now? Un-fucking-believable. Nobody saw it coming and it's finally beginning to dawn on people that it's becoming a reality; "2018 Stanley Cup Champions - Vegas Golden Knights."

Lots of deserving guys on both sides. Fleury and Orpik are the only ones to have their name on the Cup. To me with DC it's as much sympathizing with the fans as it is rooting for the players.

Vegas fans have gotten more than they bargained for, especially the ones who laid down a token bet that the Knights would get here. DC fans have waited 20 years and suffered a lot of heartbreak. Plus the chaos that would follow a Caps win would be good viewing in its own right.

The Lil Jon deal was well integrated into the broadcast. Anachronisms abound with the Knights, so one more didn't hurt. Guy seems to be a legitimate fan of the game/team, so with him already being there it was probably just plum cheaper and easier to get him than someone more relevant.

Hell of a game. Goalies were way more porous than I expected, but the high scoring and multiple lead changes made for great viewing. Didn't do much to dispel the notion that the refs are in the bag for them after that Reaves goal, but the Caps had their chances and then some. Wilson's reprisal could've changed the complexion of things, but VGK didn't miss a beat while Marchessault was being checked out. Entertaining down to the last horn. Gonna be a great series.

Seriously. I expected Vegas in 6 or Caps in 7.
On one hand, I'm thinking there's literally no way Washington will lose three straight. On the other, I would've said there's no way Vegas would lose three straight, and it happened, so they should have this in the bag, right?

Dunno if it's in the bag, but I wouldn't put it past either team to have an abrupt reversal of fortune. One thing's for sure and that's that there's no way Vegas can be as unlucky with caroms, bounces, and shots hitting the pipes as they were Monday. They skated well, spent plenty of time in the zone, but nothing would go in.

I don't think the Caps necessarily have to choke to lose, though of course that's how it'd be framed. If Fleury plays like the guy who got Vegas here, they play better special teams, and the bounces go their way, Vegas could pull this off. It's a tall order, but hopefully the home ice tonight will reinvigorate them.

It's small solace right now, I'm sure, but the Knights are in such good shape for the future. The hockey gods did right by everyone except us who were only rooting for 7 games. I like what I saw of Vegas as a fledgling hockey town and almost wish the Raiders weren't coming to try and share their spotlight. The locals there deserved something of their own and they got a winner.

The Caps totally impressed me. I thought they'd be the ones more often on the wrong side of PIM, but the Knights couldn't stay out of the box. I thought that they'd expended too much energy getting to the Final and would be a little gassed, but they skated circles around Vegas. I thought Holtby was more likely goalie to regress, but aside from that boneheaded clearing pass he was solid and definitely timely.

My hat's off to both teams. My only gripe is they didn't give us seven. Clock didn't hit midnight for Vegas; DC just wedged its big fat foot into the glass slipper and dared anybody to tell them it wasn't theirs. Fun season.

Sucks Barry Trotz is gone but it seems like he was just a placeholder for Todd Reardon. Given that they didn't extend his contract before the season started and that he had a clause in his contract that he'd get two-year extension if he won the Cup, which was below market value, I'm not surprised he left for the Islanders and now he's gonna be one of the highest paid coaches in the league.

Except that "writer" Slava Malamud (not a Russian name) is a fuckwit who was completely wrong about Putin rigging the league to allow SKA to win. SKA lost to Moscow in the Semifinals, and then Moscow went on to lose to AK Bars in a 4-1 series.

Take a look at this article if you want to read what a dumbass this Slava Malamud guy really is.

I find it funny that nobody bats an eye when Canada has a state sponsored media outlet named the CBC, but RT always gets immediately discredited because it is supported with tax dollars. It's a pretty blatant double standard.

Regardless the article is a good read, it destroys Slava's conspiracy theory. The western liberal media spreads so much ridiculous propaganda about Russia it is enough to make anyone's head spin. I think that's why no other major news outlet followed up with the story after it was proven false that the KHL was rigging itself to allow SKA to win, they didn't want to admit that they spread a bullshit story.

If you look up "Putin KHL" you will find pages of news articles amplifying Slava Malamud's tweets and saying that Putin himself is rigging the league to make SKA win last year, but since that was proven to be false, it has been complete radio silence. It's disgraceful that they could hatchet job the entire league like that and then never admit that they were wrong after the fact.

No way, plenty of teams share an arena with a team in the other league. Seattle's a lock for an NBA franchise.

Quebec City went with the Field of Dreams plan to get a team, but real life doesn't work that way. And they can forget getting a relocating team. Phoenix is still the most likely to and Houston with the Rocket's new owner wanting to get in is probably at the top of the list to snag 'em.

Shitty year for officiating what with major fuckups affecting the NFL playoffs, the Final Four, and now the Stanley Cup playoffs, but every team had it's chance(s) prior to the bad call to close the door on their opponent and didn't.

Vegas fans can stand to suffer a little, anyway. You wanted to be big league? Well, enjoy NHL officiating and Raiders football you transient degenerates.
