Big win for the XFL, though, when this thread is still up in 2022 and the XFL is still front & center.

Brady just signed a two year contract, clearly they just want that done for 2020 so their 20 year reign can be done and cemented by now, right?

What? No. The guy they should've been booing alreadly left town. You don't draft a franchise quarterback and never get him an offensive line. The medical staff is the reason he was able to keep going out there just to get fucked up again. He's retiring because of the mental toll of rehab, not because his ankle was irreparable.

The Bengals had the worst defense in the league last year. Also the Bears have legitimate championship aspirations, which the Bengals haven't had since 1989.

just because you aren't doesn't mean he's not. and hey, some people can pirate NFL games and get away with it and some can't. you benefit from double standards and iffy rule application as much as AB has.

i'd tell you and the other naive guy "welcome to the real world," but it doesn't count if you're just watching it on TV and bitching about it online. different rules apply for different people based on their skill, connections, charm, etc. not the way i would've made the world, but it's the way it is. "noboby" brown just got 10 mil guaranteed and a move to the team he wanted to join all along for acting like a 3 year old, and if one of your teams had given it to him you'd sing a different tune. talent trumps everything in the nfl. always has, always will.

I don't think you get it. I never called him a nobody, I said nobody should be rewarded like that. And as for talent being rewarded over behavior, that's why the league is losing viewers. People forget last season had incredibly low viewership. And don't act like I wouldn't raise hell if the Chiefs had signed AB (not that they could, but that's a different story), I'm still pissed with some of their offseason moves.

But this is all a moot point anymore I'm not an NFL cheerleader anymore, they lost my interest a long time ago.

Based on what? Your naievte and continued Falcons fandom proves you haven't.

AB forced his way out of Pittsburgh (getting what he wanted), got signed to a huge guaranteed money contract (not where he wanted, but fuck it, $30 million), then had his agent help him finagle his way away from a perennial loser to the defending champion (where he wanted).

It's easy to hate on Brown, but the team he's on is beating the team he used to be on 20 to zip, and the team he visited in the interim is a known disaster that anyone would be wise to leave ASAP. He'll get his money while adding a ring to his resume and never having dirited himself by suiting up for the Raiders. Pretty saavy for a 3 year old.

>Also lol at the bungs choking 1 point against the fucking SEAHAWKS

seahawks are a favorite to come out of the nfc by many accounts you mong, and they were one of the biggest betting favorites for this week, with some books giving them 9.5 points. the bengals covering and almost winning isn't classic bengals, it's actually inspiring considering most people picked cincy to finish last in the north and right now they really do look like the number 2 team there, which considering professional opinions of the steelers and browns, would be an achievement if it held all season.

these dipshits would've seen rdj as too much trouble, cast rob lowe as iron man, and the marvel cinematic universe would've ended in 2008. in fact looking at it that way is all you need to do to discount their opinion completely.

They punted on this season. Blatant tank job; it was clear when they gave their first-time head coach a fully guaranteed, 5-year deal. All the transactions since have just been reminders. They've collected the picks that between next year and 2021 that a couple decent drafts and smartly targeted FAs will have them competitive in 3 years. No different than what the Browns just got done doing. Sucks for Fins fans, but hopefully by then they'll have gone back to the classic unis full-time.

Tanking in the NFL is fucking crazy considering what effect each game has on someone's health. For anyone on the team that isn't brainwashed into the whole "We do it for the name on the front of the jersey" bullshit I don't see how they don't mutiny and refuse to play when management is surrounding them with practice squad players whose lack of talent could get them or their teammates seriously hurt.

Well honestly, who are they playing who isn't really "practice squad" tier already? Rosen is the only one I can think of and their not really playing him it all, I guess you could make the case for Ryan Fitzpatrick but given his performance I don't think he really has room to complain. (Also they did kind of mutiny earlier when they found out they were tanking, it's partly the reason Minkah wanted out so much.)

Reports were coming out that people wanted to be traded because the tanking was so obvious

It's one thing to subtly tank if you know it ain't gonna work out, you can at least put on the facade of trying.

It's another thing to get blown the fuck out in your first game with your tank out in glorious display.

Yeah, the Browns only looked so good on paper because few of the experts didn't look at their trenches. Myles Garrett makes up for an average rest-of-the front seven on defense, but it's not so on offense. It'll limit how far they get this year, but if they can patch that before next year then they'll be more than a handful.

Also how in the hell do the Steelers only have one cart and it dies on the way to pick a player up? Then after it died I guess they just decided, "fuck all precautions" and didn't put the guy on a backboard with a neck collar. Clearly player safety is always at the front of the league's mind.

Seeing Pats fans outnumbering 'Skins fans at least 2 to 1 in FedEx was tragic. That hands to the face penalty on that last Packers' drive was bullshit and of course the Packers go on to score. Just like yesterday the refs called penalties on like 6 straight plays to help the Cowboys get a TD to make the game close. The NFL has been fixed via officiating for decades, but that non-call in the NFC championship was so blatant that now they're instructing refs to throw a flag and then decide on a penalty when they huddle up rather than stare right at an infraction and not call it.

this shit is worse than the replacement refs, and if it keeps up people need to tune out. of course they won't, because americans don't care how good the actual football is just as long as nobody's reminding them about how racist they are during the pregame. the solution is as simple as the league telling the refs to swallow their whistles, but again, it doesn't matter if it's me or tom brady or troy aikman complaining; as long as business is good the nfl really doesn't give a shit about the penalty problem. instead of fixing this shit now they'll wait until ratings dip or until a franchise that people give a shit about gets treated how detroit did last night.

i already tuned out because the falcons are fucking garbage and are literally one catch away from being 0-6, but you know that the good teams are gonna get preferential treatment from the refs. hell they got screwed out of a fumble because of the refs on sunday

one of the biggest blunders is when one of the eagles players nearly got his head ripped off against the lions when his face mask was grabbed and no flag was called like get the fuck outta here
Cedric Bardwill - Tue, 15 Oct 2019 18:41:28 EST eew1p0kF No.33093 Reply
The worst part of it for me is simply the flow of the game. Bad calls happen every year. I think most fans are used to them and most of the time the calls balance out, or you can see how your team blew it anyway regardless of the zebras. This year, though, it's just the sheer number of flags that's killing me. Add replays on top of that and now football is something that happens in between referee conferences.

He dislocated his kneecap. As long as you don't tear tendons doing that it's not much different from dislocating your shoulder. It will be all swollen but otherwise you can still walk once it's popped back in. Since it got popped out when he got crushed in the pile instead of it getting bent back the wrong way he likely avoided any ligament and tendon damage.

Never forget that a 7-9 Seahawks team beat the defending Super Bowl Champion Saints in 2011.

That being said, I am a Cowboys fan and am in constant dread with this fucking team. I've wanted Garrett out since his first season fell apart in 2011. He never had the guts or mental strength to be a head coach. I won't blame him for Marinelli and Richard's lack of adjusting this season (or their fucking inability to stop a running QB), but Garrett's shortcomings have been amplified to the general public in the last month and a half.

Cowboy fans have known this shit for nearly a decade, but we've had to deal with the syphilitic brain of the overly loyal Jerry Jones. His loyalty to Garrett caused Romo five good years of a real Super Bowl run in the first part of this decade.

The NFC West of 2011 was a bit better than the NFC East of 2019 especially that Seahawks team. Garrett has got to go though and he's basically been what Marvin Lewis was to the Bengals of staying in their position for far too long and only having a couple of playoff appearances with no wins to show for it.
Hugh Pallerfuck - Mon, 09 Dec 2019 03:56:09 EST 7ETOKqHp No.33206 Reply

I'd argue that this Cowboys team is an underachieving team, not a bad team. They realistically should've beat the Vikings, Jets, Saints, and Patriots this year, but poor kicking and shit coaching killed those games final drives. If this team was 9-4 or 10-3, there would be minimal talk about Garrett, but they're not, and I'm thankful for the shit record, because at least it means a new coach / potentially a whole new staff.

tbf to Garrett, he won two playoff games during his tenure. Lewis did fuck all in his 15 years in Cincinnati. My anger with Garrett is really anger at Jerry for keeping him for so long, as it totally tanked Romo's prime years and forced him to carry the Cowboys on his destroyed collar bone year in and year out with some of the shittiest defenses and play calling I've ever seen. You know how many fucking draw plays I had to sit through on 2nd and 8 or bubble screens on 3rd and 12?

I think the Defenders/Guardians game coming up is going to be one to watch. They both won their games pretty convincingly, but I feel like the Defenders beat a better, more organized team. I think the XFL couldn't have really hoped for a better start to their league than what we got this weekend.

I do have to say, though, that the skill disparity between players and even teams so far is pretty noticeable, but that's unavoidable at this stage, and even happens in the NFL to some degree (looking at you, Dolphins). There are only so many professional level football players to go around, and 95% of them are in or prospecting to be in the NFL.

That said, I'm genuinely really excited for the XFL now, whereas before this weekend I was hopeful at best. Over the next couple of seasons (as you said, we're basically guaranteed at least 3) as players start leveling out and teams start learning new and interesting ways to play around with the new rule set, it can really only get better and better.

Yeah the Defenders-Guardians game should be a good one especially with the Guardians’ offense against the Defenders’ defense.

Obviously you’ll have a skill gap but this isn’t necessarily a minor league that the XFL doesn’t want to be but rather an alternative league for players trying to make it on an NFL or even a CFL team. I was surprised by how much better the new XFL feels over the previous one since that was too gimmicky and the AAF that was too slow and boring but I hope it improves and we have a sustainable spring league not seen since the USFL before they tried to compete directly with the NFL and leading to their demise.

QB play is really bad for a league catering so heavily towards offense. No 300+ passing game, 1-1 TD/INT ratio and an average game score of 17 through three weeks.

I know it isn’t fair to compare it to the NFL constantly, but people are used to the new QB dominated offense of the NFL. The announcers can only keep using the “defense is really, really superb” gimmick for so long.

Yeah it's hard to imagine anything better than a 3rd or 4th string tier QB taking XFL money when they can still get million dollar contracts in the NFL even as a backup. Other positions have a little bit more fluidity in that regard, but unless I'm way off on how much XFL players are being paid, I can see quality QBs being pretty hard to come by for the XFL until they're capable of offering a little more incentive.

These are all issues that can slowly be ironed out, I think, as long as the league manages to survive and grow for a few years. The problem is that if there are only two teams in the entire league worth watching all season, everyone is going to get bored.
Lydia Mocklesatch - Tue, 18 Feb 2020 19:59:08 EST iJfZfTOA No.33292 Reply
They aren’t lining up against all-pros, either. There problem is that the XFL is focusing on recruiting former NFL quarterbacks, where they have a pool of over 90 Division I starting quarterbacks who won’t be selected by one of the 32 NFL teams. I wouldn’t say they are scraping the bottom of the barrel if they want to wade in the shallow pond of third and forth string NFL QBs.
Fuck Clidgelare - Wed, 19 Feb 2020 14:27:19 EST jCgLxIPu No.33293 Reply
I havn't seen any XFL games yet, idk if their rules are significantly different than the NFL, but to me it seems like a massive mistake to be going for low tier NFL quarterbacks just on the virtue of them being trained for a different environment.
Promising third string NFL QBs who go to the CFL always end up flaming out horrifically and being outcompeted by a dude who couldn't even book a training camp gig south of the border, because it's a different game and their superior physical skills don't necessarily translate into knowing how a CFL passing offense works in the slightest.

If they wanted this league to be sustainable long term as its own thing then they should be going for those 90 Division I guys, teaching them to thrive in their own specific system and building home grown stars who can thrive in their own ecosystem like an Anthony Calvillo .
If nothing else you're never gonna find a Kurt Warner by hiring a Matt Mcgloin

Agreed with bringing in fresh faces from college. For the most part, a lot of underrepresented college quarterbacks fall through the cracks or get passed up by the NFL because they are under six feet, they don’t have a strong enough arm, whatever. The NFL misses on that position a lot and for good reason, it’s a position with, it’s one of the hardest transitions to go from amateur to pro. Colt Brennan has like a million FCS Div I records, but was bounced out of the league two years later.

A smart XFL scout should visit colleges whose football program best match his team. Jeff Garcia, Kurt Warner and Warren Moon all went undrafted. I’m willing to bet there is a ton of hidden talent out there NFL scouts don’t know about or are willing to take a risk on.

TLDR; don’t sign 30 year old NFL backup QBs

>Jeff Garcia, Kurt Warner and Warren Moon

Damn 90s NFL was comfy. I miss sitting on the rug on Sunday and watching on my shitty little TV.

>TLDR; don’t sign 30 year old NFL backup QBs

It really feels like they just took whoever tried out in some cases. Like did Matt McGloin call up and they were like, "He was in the NFL! He's probably not bad! We'll take him." I don't remember seeing him in the NFL personally, but the guy is 30, and when he was in the NFL he only averaged like a 54% or 56% completion rate or something like that. Jameis Winston, who threw an outrageous 30 interceptions last season, still averaged higher than that. Mason Rudolph and Duck Hodges put up better numbers than that. I know the comparisons aren't exactly fair, but you get my point.

How many QBs do you guys think got passed on by the XFL? I'm guessing not many.

I've been doing lots of bashing of XFL play, but I do want to see it succeed because I like many of the rule changes and, honestly, more pro-level football and more options for players and fans can never be bad. The first weekend was fun. I just hope that one day they actually are pro-level football.

And stop running over to sideline right after every single play and harassing players. A lot of people eat that shit up, but I hate it. It feels hokey and excessive.

>Damn 90s NFL was comfy

Hell yeah. Birth of the West Coast offense, 49ers/Cowboys rivalry and the ONE YARD LINE TACKLE. Watching it as a kid was hella fun.

>It really feels like the just took whoever tried out in some cases.

You see a lot of franchises in sports do this. They take an “underutilized” veteran and try to turn them into the next franchise player. I can’t really think of a time it’s worked recently. I’m willing to bet the staff saw McGloin, looked at his collegiate career and asked themselves why some other team hadn’t signed him out from under Big Ben. Well, now they are finding out why and on top of that he had a huge meltdown and probably won’t be back with the team next season.

>How many QBs do you think for passed on by the XFL?

Did you mean NFL? Regardless, the XFL isn’t going to be able to sign most veterans for cheaper than the NFL league minimum, so they need to sign fresh talent. You see it a lot in Association Football, where the lower league teams are made up of raw, younger players due to cost and potential talent. They could even start getting high school guys. Getting anything outside a three star recruit could prove difficult, but a guy going to a school not big enough to provide incentives might be willing to take the deal and you could built that guy up for a year before starting him. That’s give you two years before potentially losing him to the NFL.

>The first weekend was fun.

I loved the first weekend because the excitement and most pro leagues is always good for the consumer. I really hope the XFL succeeds, but right now they have two quality teams. That needs to change for the longevity of the league.

The passing game wasn't there today for both teams with Tyree Jackson coming in for Cardale Jones and only passing for 39 yards (though he did have 32 yards rushing) and Jordan Ta'amu not being able to capitalize on offense. However, I was surprised that there was a combined 402 rushing yards today.

Also that Tampa Bay-LA game was quite a back and forth with LA really making a heck of a comeback and prevailing in the end with that interception with seconds left.

That DeAndre Hopkins-David Johnson trade is mind-boggling stupid to make

Still a better option than Jameis Winston even if it’s only for two years.
