So i've only got one tattoo but im working on getting more, I want them to have meaning though. Anyways eventually I plan on getting sleeves, would it be ok to just do one tattoo at a time with no general plan as to what my sleeve would turn out as or should I get a good idea of what the whole sleeve is going to be and then start working on it because either way i know it will have to take more than one visit.

But yeah also general tattoo threads, what do you guys think of tattoos? Do you have any? Also post pictures, it can be your tattoo or just a very interesting one to you. Personally I really like how '3D' tattoos look.

Started getting this one done off my auntie, gonna add something like red to black oldschool roses to wrap around the back of my arm.

Need some advice on any additions that would look cool too please. We're thinking of making the rate grey-ish and fluffier.
Here's my work in progress;

As for you OP tattoos don't really need to mean much imo, it's just fashion at the end of the day and by the time you regret it you'll probably be too old to be bothered.

If you want a full sleeve it usually looks better if it's started as a full sleeve rather than blending mismatched tattoo's into eachother, speak to a good tattoo artist.

Also thinking of getting a tattoo like this on my ribs opposite my owl tat. Good idea or homo idea.

If your tattoo is unimpressive until you explain it, congratulations, you have a shitty boring tattoo.
People will tell you it's cool but face it, if someone played you a really shitty song, and then started rambling on about how much it means to them, you'd tell them it was cool too, right? Right.
My point is that attaching verbal meaning to a piece of visual art really compromises its potential impact. It's not taking full advantage of the medium.

Another music example. An instrumental piece. It makes you feel feels and you fucking love it and not a word is said through any of its 13 minutes because it's that good. Wow. That's fucking cool. Gr8 music. 10/10

That's a piece of art that really makes the most of its medium. It uses only itself to communicate emotions and convey fleshed out ideas without spoonfeeding any of it to you.
IMO the best tattoos are just as impacting as my favorite instrumental pieces of music. They communicate on a base emotional level that words can't reach. That's making the most of the medium, a tattoo doing something only a tattoo can do. That's awesome to me.
When you bring words into it, what's the point? Whatever you just said to me, you could have said without the tattoo and saved a few cubic centimeters of breath while you were at it because you wouldn't have had to begin the sentence with "I got this because"

also, flash tattoos > RIP muh gramma
the tribal tatts you verbally shit on with your friends on a bi-annual basis > anything you've ever considered getting

I like it
and the fact that you probably don't give a shit about my shitty opinions makes me more inclined to like the tattoos you have/are getting and respect you as a person

pic related is the only tatted up dude in my fashion folder so let's talk about him

despite the pieces being individually unimpressive, "damn that guy looks really cool" is a totally valid statement worth conveying(because he didn't have to verbally tell me that he's a ~cool~ guy) and imo it makes his tattoos "good"

Lesson of the day is that I wish I wasn't such a contrarian faggot so I wouldn't get glued to my computer to write out lengthy posts like this when I encounter dumbasses like OP.

Ignore everything I'm about to suggest because I'm not a tattoo artist and have no experience with ink's interactions with skin.

Anyway I'm a sucker for analogous and triadic palettes. Since you already want to go gray, I'd recommend a high value barely saturated purple/slate color to bridge between the red/orange and the blue/green. High value to contrast with the already present mid values. The desaturation allows it to function like a gray and pronounce the depth of the colors around it

also it looks like you're going to be filling in the wing? The color already present looks pretty nice and suits the purple I recommended as well. Could go darker and maybe less blue/more red, but I still think it already looks like a pretty nice color choice so don't sweat it if it's easier to stick with it. A really deep/dark maroon/burgundy would be perfect for the owl's body imo though.

I've never taken an art class in my life, so really, I have no idea what I'm talking about and you should run this by your artist while assuming I'm trying to trick you into getting ugly ink.

Ah yeah I thought it was a bit plain, I still like it though and it's kinda special cause my aunt designed and did it on me.

Going to wrap it around the back of my arm with something to try and spice it up i'm not too sure (someone suggested dark dark red and black old school roses but roses are overdone IMO)

It'll be pretty much finished this friday, i'll post a pic if anyones interested

Also why isn't anyone else posting their tattoos!
Pic unrelated but i considered a similar design...

Why do you have to think about it in such black and white terms. The key to life is nothing is black and white, there are always exceptions to rules. Some tattoos should have meanings, some should be purely aesthetic. Hell it's YOUR tattoo you can have what the hell you want (or nothing at all). I have tattoos that mean a lot to mean and have various symbolic meanings as well as tattoos that simply look awesome/accentuate body parts to fill me with day to day confidence.

It's your tattoo, you can do what you want. Either have a look through the artists flash (if they have it, it's becoming increasingly unpopular because of how many similar designs get spewed out and artists/the artform is getting boring/stagnated) or design something yourself. Or ask them to design them for you. Tattoo artists aren't just there as a sort of "photocopier" from paper to your skin, a good artist can draw/design on demand, and if they can't you're better off going somewhere else.

Also whilst on the subject: CHEAP TATTOOS =/= GOOD TATTOOS.
Chances are unless you're blind you'll probably need to cover up that "cheap" shitty tattoo you got (at best) and at worst you'll get an infection.

That is an argument.
I have 3 tattoos and they all have some sort of meaning behind them.
But that like my tattoo's, are a personal decision. You can get tattoo's if you just think they are cool. Your body your call.

For me in my mind, if I get a tattoo with meaning behind it I'll be less likely to regret it in the future.

For example I really want a pirate ship, but the most sailing I've done is Ferry rides and being in a little fishing boat on a lake. I really like pirates and what they stood for, but I have no sea experience nor do I know much of anything about sailing.
To me it would feel disingenuous for me to get that tattoo. The only way I could see myself getting it is if/when I move to New Zealand and it can represent the leaving of my birth country for better a better land.

I like tattoos, but what is the tattoo of? I've seen some dank unique ones in my day, hell even some cool as fuck video game/cartoon/comic themed ones. I don't think you need some 3deep5u meaning behind your ink, hell, it's your body, fuck what other people think. My issue is with tribal spikey designs, see, being a of pacific island descent (New Zealand Moari) I hold tribal tattoos to a standard, they're your place in society, your family story ect. I know that spikey tribal has nothing to do with actual tribal markings but when I see them (despite not having any myself) I do feel like people are taking the piss out of my culture but hey man, whatever floats your boat bro.

Don't go to NZ, it's shit and there are no jobs, you will regret it.

Internets if you can guess where my tattoos are from.

I've got about 8 more hours in the chair left. But man am I really digging the way it's turning out. I'd like to see it in regular light first. I'm still not sold on the whole blacklight concept but that's one of the best uses of it I've seen. (Also I hope those initials on the bottom right aren't the artist's signature because lolno)

Here's my latest. Sometimes I look at the lion IRL and think he's too dark, but in this pic it looks lighter so I think it's just me. It's a coverup so it kind of had to be on the darker side, plus the color in the lion is only like two months old so it'll fade more (The hair is freshly done in this pic which is why it's so much darker.)

I got this finished very recently. The main design is inspired by some artwork by John Baizley from Baroness. Then the rest of the sleeve is just some traditional japanese stuff I like and I think it complements the main focus. Got it done in a little no name tattoo shop in Okinawa. Eventually I'm going to blend it down to my chest and ribs, but I haven't decided on a design for that yet. I really want to sleeve it all the way down, but the way the design ends is going to make it complicated. I may just get the forearm sleeved. But that's out of the question now, as my current job would fuck me if I got a whole sleeve.

I also have a little tribal swallow design on my chest, but it's pretty cliche. I like it though.

NB, are those acorns above the skull? What the fuck are those, man? It's well done, there's just a few questionable design elements going on. Skull looks kinda off because of how squished it is, owl has a hook coming up from it's right wing like it's a bat, the mouse tail is the same colour as (what I assume are) the owl's talons. That or the tail is just way too bloody long.

As for what to get around it, that's up to you. There's no wrong decision.

The only problem is that they're the exact same colour as the owl. I thought they were acorns right away, but I wasn't sure if they were part of the bird or not. Whether or not to touch them again is your call. Might make it better, might make it worse. Talk it over with your artist.

I'm getting a 3d portrait now from my friend - he's just started his own shop. He is looking for a 3m thermalfax and asked if I knew where to find one for a reasonable price. Ebay has listings that are set at 600+ dollars, and that's out of budget. Anyone know where to find these?

Just got home. Have a real shitty, low res picture from my cellphone.

Couldn't decide if I wanted colour, so stuck with an outline for now.

Did you ask the artist to make it look like a shitty knock-off job? Because that's what it looks like. I mean was the print-out you supplied too detailed for your crappy artist to do? Because it's not that detailed but so much has been left out. Argh I'm annoyed at you, how much did you pay for that?

What's shitty about it? The lines are clean, any jacked up ones are from me twitching. It's just an outline with no colour, and a cell phone picture to boot. Have you seen the original? Mike doesn't tattoo anymore, he can go as hard as he wants because he doesn't have to worry about his paper aging, or about his lines melting together.

Moreover, incredibly low res cellphone picture. Doesn't do the tattoo justice at all.

Sorry, man, not deep enough for you?

NB, didn't mean to sound condescending. I genuinely am curious what's bad about it.
Hamilton Dartbury - Sat, 21 Jun 2014 18:36:50 EST ElVE/1g0 No.58942 Reply
It's not bad if you like it, it's just kind of basic, as basic as you could get.
It's the "alt" girl with spider webs and diamond tattoo kinda blandness that you see a lot these days. You know the kind of people who want to ooze individuality, but couldn't be more unique than a sheet of drywall.
But I've got a rose on my arm so take my criticism with two handfuls of salt.

Oh, yeah, I know. American Traditional is my favorite style, I like 'em simple. I'm not a fan of the big, ├╝ber-complex ones. I appreciate the talent it takes to create them, just not my bag. Less is more, and that.
Priscilla Croggleman - Sat, 21 Jun 2014 18:55:52 EST DwwC76/n No.58945 Reply
Double NB because I'm way too high and nothing seems to come out the way I want it to right now.

I have absolutely no notion of being "unique". I pick my tattoos because I dig them, not because they're custom, one of a kind, type dealios. I could probably roll down the street and find somebody else with one super close to mine, and that's cool because I don't need to be the only one with it to enjoy it.
Nigel Clonkinridge - Sat, 21 Jun 2014 21:08:52 EST mhZAhtEW No.58946 Reply

Sorry if I sounded mad, long day. It's just not a great representation of alt-girls, pin-up girls or the Americana style. It could be the odd placement or shitty picture, but compositionally it doesn't flow, the 8 is out of symmetry, the shoulders look manly and broad, the boobs are just plain wrong, the pose just seems stilted and unnatural.

You definitely need some colour, real quality Americana colour otherwise this is just a badly done tattoo. Pure linework traditional tatts do look bad, mainly because they're only in that style because artists couldn't do any finer linework in those times.
Lydia Dussleway - Sat, 21 Jun 2014 21:55:16 EST DwwC76/n No.58947 Reply
Yeah, I agree about the colour. I wasn't sure at first, stuck with just an outline so I could think it over. Gonna live with this for a couple months, still better safe than sorry.

I don't see any of the other things you see, but subjectivity is a bitch. Might be the awful picture, might be we just see it dufferently. Also, nah, you didn't seem mad, man.

Some of yall are taking tattoos far too seriously. Like I have somewhere around 20 tattoos, some are really fleshed out pieces, and on the other side I have "Serpentine" stick n poked on my toe knuckles. I have a naked woman done in a traditional style that's supposed to be my grandma and I've even got a tattoo of some shithead gang thing when I was a kid (oddly enough one of the tattoos that gets complimented the most). It's a scrap book, a lot of them were done by friends, I get complimented by strangers every so often but who cares? A lot of them are just fond memories, a lot of them are tongue in cheek. Truthfully I think I like the Serpentine one the best, that was a very light hearted period in my life.

I see a lot of dudes with corny, played out tattoos which are sometimes aesthetically pleasing but also a pretty good gauge on how uninteresting they are as people. Your body's gonna look like shit and so are your tattoos eventually, might as well be having fun while you have them and do you

(Also I really dig shitty old people tattoos, genuinely looking forward to when I'm an old dick head and all my ink has started to bleed out and I'm just sitting on a rocker looking like Gran Torino and shouting at kids on their moon boards or whatever)

Hey guys I could use some advice on my tattoo. I got this one about a year ago and I was extremely happy with the size, placement, and the delicateness. It's a Nordic sigil called Vegvisir which I got for several reasons, including as a tribute to my partially Swedish ancestry. When it was fresh it was really nice but I accidentally kept scratching it in my sleep during the first week of healing and I think this may have contributed to how unevenly the lines have healed, or it could be to due to normal fading?

Anyways I want to know if you guys think I should get it touched up or altered in some way, I prefer the delicate lines an simplicity and I don't want them to get too bold but maybe I have to beef them up for clarity? What do you guys think?

Reminder that attributing verbal meaning to a piece of visual art detracts value from the artwork and invests all meaning in your words, the same ones you could have told me without getting a tattoo.
