recently started getting interested in watches/horology. ideally i'd like a nice mechanical watch but the worthwhile ones seem to all be outside of my price range. i recently picked up a vintage benrus us army watch from 1965 off ebay, which is mechanical, but is not really in good enough shape for daily wear. my go to watch currently is a quartz tissot quickster, as pictured except instead of a metal strap i opted for a black synthetic nato strap. i'd like to expand my collection, but for now i'm satisfied with what i've got.

what kinda watches are you guys rockin? baller rolexes or even just timexes i wanna know

A cell phone. For some reason I screw up watches. They just will not keep time if they are on my person, however when I give them away they work fine for someone else.

collecting watches is for rich people. . .

however appreciating watches anyone can do. I suggest you temper your desire to own these awesome objects with the knowledge that however impressive and beautiful the delicate mechanism is, all the time and energy used to create that mechanism is essentially wasted because of how redundant clocks are in today's society.

It's more difficult to not know the time than it is to casually glance at some car dealerships ticker sign, or hear the lady on the radio, or see the box at the bottom left corner of your television.

Nice watches are just like nice cars - baroque symbols of power. When you aspire to own a lambourghini, you're really aspiring to stand apart from the people, to become one of the few to command such wealth as to allow the purchase of 300 lesser vehicles but instead to buy one, for 300 times the price.

The visceral reality of premium consumption is the violence of it's production.

I'm looking for the perfect simple watch.
You know, the 2 hands and 12 lines type. No numbers or anything else.

Unfortunately all the watches like that with nice faces are womens' watches )^:

I'd love that black one if it didn't have those minute lines.
That's a fuckin shame

you can buy cheap watches and get second hand watches at thrift stores and stuff. i see where you're coming from and i appreciate that, and to a certain point i also feel this way about frivolous purchases. i'd never be interested in owning an incredibly expensive vehicle, for example. it stands out too much and i'd rather just get something that blends in and doesn't call attention to itself. but like i wouldn't really compare a $300 watch to a $250,000 or whatever lamborghini. having a watch is at least marginally useful, though its primary function is rendered redundant by newer technology. it is ultimately jewelry at this point. also, in regard to the violence of production, while the watch i got is swiss made, and the gems are synthetic, it's likely some of the other materials have been acquired through slave labour. unfortunate, sorta like an iphone or computer in that way though.

buying ethically is usually gonna be more expensive because everyone involved is fairly remunerated. does that mean that some premium goods, while possibly being classist, are actually better to own because you didn't support suffering and oppression with your purchase?

wtf nigga you think swiss don't use jewels from Africa? where do they come from, the fair mines of the China? You retarded, if you want a 'fair' watch you get a quartz watch, a worthless watch that is more accurate and doesn't infringe on rights. Synthetic is way better also for the reason that they don't use fucking slaves in their diamond laboratories.

>i opted for a black synthetic nato strap

You bought a nato strap to use on a mechanical watch. Nato straps besides on divers are UGLY and look CHEAP and UGLY. Did I mention they are UGLY?

Be smart and just buy a cheap quartz watch that you like the way it looks. Unless you crave the ticking sounds of a mechanical, quartz watches are way better (my f91w will tell time more accurately, light up, has a stopwatch, and tells the day of the week as well as the month).

My favorite mechanical automatic is my titoni airmaster, it beautiful, swiss made, not that expensive, and it winds itself!

I apparently tend to go for unisex stuff because "men" watches don't know how2minimalist without costing 1000 fuckin dollars

-and for when I wanna look like the dirty guinea I am, I have this (pic not me). I got it for cheaper than 100 (its current price) but can't recall exactly what number.

Seeing as these are the only watches that I've ever owned, I don't feel too bad for having spent a few hundred dollars in total for them

90% of mens watches are 1lb bricks to size of a toaster.

Ugh. Fuck that shit. Apparently I'm a fag because I wear "dainty" watches.

I remember this dude in college had some 80 dollar macy's special that he would have to take off to be able to type.

I currently have a couple Citizens, 3-4 Casio's and the Navyman or whatever they call it. I think Hanowa makes them or SMW.

I'd like a Casio Master of G but I can't find any. I'm loving dat Rangeman. I'm thinking they are gimmicky shit though.

Timex wearer here. Pic looks exactly like mine.
It's super low maintenance (every few months I give it a clean with some chrome cleaner), it's water resistant, lights up when pressed and is super hardy; My aunt has the same watch (with a purple strap) for the last 30 years.
Shit, it cost me 35 euros, it looks nice (especially when it's shined) so I'm a happy consumer and all that.

I bought myself a Stuhrling for Christmas. I had never heard of them before but they had fantastic reviews for a very reasonable price. Pic related is the one I bought, the Ascot II. Not bulky, not ostentatious, quite sleek and simple.
