What exactly is VM&P Naphtha? You most likely know it's used for the extraction of DMT, but it's not really accessible if you don't live in America.
Some guides say you can use basic paint thinner. Is that true?
lil' amazing !!vVWR8L52 - Wed, 18 Nov 2015 15:46:07 EST VPQjlo+g No.77378 Reply
there are a ton of solvents you can use, but I'd recommend sticking with the stuff that's tested and gives good results. Just goole it. Naptha is great because it's selective and gives great freeze precipitation results.

look up the MSDS for the product. and then look for products with a similar composition available to you. and then purify them.

i miss the smell of n-hexane and its neurotoxicity

Read article about how foxcom bans n-hexane. Still required to use it in organic lab. Fuck up one day and spilled some all over the floor.

what the fuck. it's neurotoxic? are you sure?
It's a major component of gasoline along with minor amounts of benzene, though.

I've spilled hexanes all over the place before. Fine shit.
It just evaporates..........

yeah hexane is definitely bad for you

VM&P stands for Varnish Maker & Painters

Naphtha is an aliphatic hydrocarbon mixture the proportions of which are usually proprietary but some brands will tell you specifically.

dont you read the msds of the solvents you work with?

and the fact that it has a high vapour pressure only exerbates the situation.

before the introduction of latex paints, many painters suffered brain damage in varying degrees.

but i shouldnt be preaching about hazards and precautions

Of course I do. I'm actually one of the safety coordinators for a while. I even asked my heads a while back and they have actually come from a long line of benzene-column, ammonium dichromate burning, hydrazine-in-fumehood lab organisers. They're angry that acetone NEEDs to be in a fume hood now because it's partially carcinnogenic.

That's not the point. Sorry. I know that hexanes and other aliphatics can [along side aromatics] be used as central nervous adultrants. But I didn't know that hexanes (and all naptha related chemicals) have neurotoxicity. That does make sense but I've just never thought about it.
One of the most popular column aluents is still Hexanes:Ethyl Acetate : DCM which we do not even run in the fume hood anymore. The most common "bridging chemical" from Bench>Hood would be chloroform.
However, I think when I become an instructor, I'll be teaching my kids of the good ol' days where we used benzene in fume hoods and hexanes just on regular lab benches. This is while everyone restricted to using chemical with a remote odour to operating only under a fucking glove box.

I wish you could still smoke in labs.

It's supposed to be two benzene rings fused together in a butterfly pattern, but it tends to be only a high-fraction distilate of petroleum.

im mighty pissed about acetone being concidered too dangerous for some teaching labs. ive been to one practise lab where theyve subsituted all acetone for butanone, which seems overly catious if i dare say retarded to me.

the workplace regulations are very important and so on and so on because they are measured against the premise that you geta continous exposition for 8h five times a week. but i still wont be wearing my respirator while im doing DIY shit with acetone in my shed.

the worst scene involving acetone ive ever been a part of was during some OC1 teaching labs when the fuckheads that didnt pay attention started cleaning their equiptment with acetone after having conductted an experiment with bromine. i still cri evertim.

ive never run a professional column outside of a fumehood since ive been doing flash chrom, compensating by tiny collection fractions. it seems to safe time unless the different compounds have distinct UV activities.

damn, i wish we could smoke in labs. justa fucking vape would satisfy me. my old bosses and me used to go to the office for smokes when most of the staff were already gone. i miss my old lab and i miss the literature smoke breaks and i miss the "ive got my product on the rotary" beer breaks and the "im going over to the NMR room to submit samples, you guys want some beers from the paki" breaks. fuck

youre thinking of naphtalene. naphta is a bothersome term, same goes for petroleum ether. gotta give kudos to IUPAC in those cases

Jebus, when did acetone become carcinogenic?
Ebenezer Wigglekick - Fri, 12 Feb 2016 06:41:00 EST IBjivIKO No.77652 Reply
EPA and NTP don't have it listed as carcinogenic to humans, ACGIH and ATSDR lists it as not classifiable.

I think naphtha is just a liquid mixture of various hydrocarbons.

How old are you? My old secondary school chem teacher is like around 70 now and first chem class we had he taught us how to use bunsen burners safely along with a story from his time as a chem student in uni of how his roommate lit the classroom on fire by opening a flask of ether when the teacher walked by with a lit cigar. Roommate bald, teacher bald, and then no one was allowed to smoke in the chem classes anymore.

That's like what? 50 years ago?

true this, do not use naptha unless you are in a well ventilated area with proper PPE. its shitty. i mean im still going to use all mine till its gone, but yea, be careful with that shit

I used to write down middleschool (that's what all secondary education is called in the Netherlands - Middelbare School) but I was tired of getting banned for being socalled "underage".

Since Dutch "middleschool" can be 6 years long (if you take the "A only class" courses) , and I had to redo a year once, I was able to legally browse 420chan during the last two years of "middleschool".

Those Dutch Madrasas can't possibly be any good at teaching science, I thought that all European schools tought was pansy social awareness crap?
