So I went back to college recently to pursue chemistry, I just got accepted into a pretty good uni to do Organic chemistry.

Now since i'm not that young anymore I really need to do well and not fuck this up, so since i really enjoy chemistry and need to make this work i've been putting a whole load of effort into making sure it goes well.

Please give me some recommendations for pre uni reading so I can get a head start.

Also share experiences? I did a pretty short and condensed course to get here I learned all the basics during that but i've stilled missed out on a lot of stuff an 18 year old would have done at the college level, so i'm expecting my first week at uni to be a bit overwhelming and full of things i need to learn but then i've heard from a few people that it's like that for everyone no matter how much extra reading you've been doing.

you might want to take a look at the organic chemistry lectures the stanford university uploaded on youtube. i donĀ“t know whether they are good, i just watched the physics lectures of leonard susskind and enjoyed them very much. propably the quality of the OC-lectures is comparable.

Also when my interest in organic chemistry arose back in school i just looked for drug syntheses (for example at the rhodium archive on erowid.org) and tried to understand what happens. I never touched an (advanced) chemistry book until university but had quite a lot of OC-knowledge when i started. Also i found that it is quite easy to understand the theoretical background - molecular orbital theory in particular - when you have all the examples of actual drug syntheses in mind.

I don't really take drugs anymore but i was always interested in that side of things.

Read Organic Chemistry as a Second Language, that book helped me a lot. The first chapters on the basic concepts are very good, and it explains them rather well. It also discusses methods for learning organic efficiently for a beginner looking to do more than just pass the course. I'd suggest buying it or following along in a notebook. Drawing a structure always helps me visualize and understand a structure and some practice drawing structures is actually pretty valuable. If you can't draw you can't communicate.

Khan academy has some great lectures on a lot of topics. Relatively quick and really thorough, maybe following along with them and taking some notes would help. The stuff they have on there would likely fall pretty close to your curriculum in class if you pics the right lessons.

As a student, though, I'd recommend right now trying to read the stuff that makes you tick. As in, don't just go straight into reading the dryest chemistry you can find, read about the stuff you love. One of the most useful and most underrated assets a student can have is a love of the material. I think in our education system this is totally ignored and if anything you end up with a bunch of people who only learn just enough to do decent on a test. By finding ways to sort of 'kindle' a passion for subjects I'd be learning in my classes, I easily rose to the top of most of those classes without doing much 'work'. I mean I still had to do a fair amount of reading and hw, but I actually loved it, and so it was hardly work to me. Just keep finding ways to connect your material to things that you're interested in. Most of the best work I've ever done at school was ironically the stuff I enjoyed doing. There's definitely something to that

Try Khan Academy. Listen to their lectures on the basic sciences.

Also call me retarded, but I think if I went back to college I would do fucking awesome. You have an edge over the rest of those kids now: you know what the outside world is like.

Back in the day I was smart as shit, but I had little drive, motivation, or direction other than the challenge itself. Nowadays, after 4 years of professional chemistry formulation, I have the experience of research, confidence in my abilities, and an understanding of how shitty being a full on adult is.

You don't really appreciate consequences when you're young in school. But if I ever went back, I would smash that shit.

So here's what I read about students who are Stanford material: Get the books for the course a couple of months ahead, read them before starting class.

Then study the professor's notes and do practice problems as you pass through sections. I always learned more when I wasn't scribbling shit down in class. I don't learn like that, I have to watch, listen, and try to understand.

So my recommendation is: Don't take notes in class. Watch, Listen, Engage yourself. But apparently I'm a rare exception that doesn't learn from rote memorization. I hate memorization. I need to understand.
