Everytime. Every fucking time I try and synthesize GBL using the Sandmeyer reaction, the temperature skyrockets up to 40c and a bunch of foam forms atop the post reaction mix. I've used many different brands of HCl, GABA, and Sodium Nitrite. I've even begun to use a mini freezer to perform the reaction. And yet everytime the temperature goes up to 40 - 50 degrees Celsius. What in the hell am I doing wrong? I am following all of the instructions, but it's impossible to keep the reaction below 2 degrees C, and to stop the foam from developing, even with a goddamn mini freezer. The rate at which I add the HCl does not seem to matter. The amount of stirring doesn't seem to make a difference either. Could anybody help a complete amateur out?

heres an idea. instead of using that reaction why not do an easier synth? i just found a gbl synth thats one step and two ingredients.

Go buy some THF (tetrahydrofuran) a pretty common solvent. then use a strong oxidizer like what i read says to use aqueous sodium bromate but idk if theres anything actual special about that oxidizer or if pretty much any equally strong oxidizer would work. the THF then forms GBL in a one step one pot reaction.
