Okay, this is just something I got to thinking about when bonging about;
Would a wooden plane gain speed by being painted in a low-air-friction surface, or would it get slower / stay the same speed because of the weight added by the surface treatment?

It depends on if the forward momentum given from reduced drag overcomes the pull on the plane added by the paint, but probably yes. I imagine there's math you Can do. Also being perfectly smooth doesn't reduce drag as much as you'd think. There's a reason golf balls and jet planes have dimples

Oh, I completely forgot about golf balls!
Super thanks for the recap, it really helped!
But then, maybe it would be of help if one made the total definitive top of the layer on the outermost exposed edges to give those planes that are left exposed but flattened, would it help to make only that specific part as frictionless as possible?
Or would it be micro-optimization at that point?

Sounds like somebody needs to test a hypothesis
Make some models and do some testing

Fuck yeah, I'll go on ahead, I'm doing it in my spare time as a hobby so results could take a while, but I'll make a todo-point on my list to ping you about it when I do!
