It's different for every OEM. Can you be specific about the problem? I would start by finding your device in the XDA forums and seeing if anyone has been arsed to work on it. Some devices are too uncommon for anyone to bother hacking.

My son bought Lenovo y540 17,3 inch with 1660ti and 144hz display. Colors is complete shit making it unable to watch anything withut noticing the colors is off. I think this is because of the anti glare protection thing. Now he wants to return it and buy a different one in the same price range for 60hz or 144/120hz where the colors isnt fucked. Does all the 144hz laptops have a anti glare screen, like the Acer Nitro 5 for example?

Compared to his previous Y520 15,3, the colors/quality on y520 is way better than the shit 144hz display on y540...

What laptop display doesnt fuck up colors like this? Anyone tried the Acer predator helios or acer nitro 5 and can tell if the colors are like they should?

I assume the anti glare would be the issue. Bad drivers could have been installed when setting up the machine, updates form MS? Could try to adjust the heck out of settings, or reinstall like video drivers, But return asap if not happy.
I have seen it before, meaning to return exchange something and an accident happens that warranty would not fix, so replacement would as well be out of the question. Anyway, if think know the colors are off then they likely are. If that is how it started from the get-go, then things may be be able to be changed with the computer.

They'll unlock it if you produce a death certificate. Or you can just ask the previous owner if you didn't steal it. That's usually how it goes.

Is there a free desktop recorder that doesn't suck?

Hey guys, can anyone recomend a simple desktop recording program to capture audio/video of my desktop? I'm taking a college course online and my professor has set it so that their lectures are removed from the course site after 2 weeks of broadcast. This is a problem because these lectures contain information we need to review for exams and isn't in the text or handouts.

Before you ask, yes this is a dumb set up and I'm trying to get them to change it, but in the meantime I need to get these recordings while they fix the issue.

I've tried a couple of free desktop recording software, but so far they either do not capture audio, save as a unique filetype that can't be played back in a media player, or can only capture in 3 minute intervals before auto shutting off

I need a program that can record a video conference that goes on for 1-2 hours, saves audio and video, and is free.

I don't care if it has a water mark or if the quality isn't crisp as long as it's functional. I just need a basic program.

Thanks for any recs

Background
I run Ubuntu 17.10 on my laptop and need to upgrade it.
Use it for coding microcontrollers (so need proper USB support), Web development, and general use.
No upgrading Ubuntu never works because fuck I don't care why.

I am not a new to choosing different Linux distros, I was even one of these guys who did run gentoo on his home pc. But not any more, because well I don't want my OS to be a hobby just fucking use it.

What annoys me are the release cycle and fucking outdated packages you get.
So I like that arch has rolling updates but I am not familiar with it and I do not want to spend time doing neckbeard shit.

I'm this close to installing windows on the thing so help.

Need 'actual' help go here, https://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/
They will tell you to look it up yourself when it's something
you can find, if you can muck through all the 'ubuntu', help
pages.

You can install this system in about 5 minutes, update
in about 5 minutes. It will recognize your hardware
without issues. If an issue arises, the forum will help.

If a software is outdated, just ask. If it isn't ready or
has some flaw it will be reverted until issues are
resolved.

In all it is a minimal system that you can run out of the box,
or make it, say as 'interesting' to work with as you like.

>I tried out ubuntu mate and god damn their gui sucks.
Really? I use Mint Mate, and think it's great. I wonder if the ubuntu versioin is very different?

I like Mate because it doesn't really try to re-invent anything. I think of it as a combo of OSX and XP. Most of the interface is like old windows, but then it also has support for multiple workspaces, and doesn't look terrible.

>going back to unity 7.
Every time I try unity, I nope the fuck out very quickly. It feels like OSX where they try to hide functionality from you. Or they make some random change that makes zero sense. Plus, fuck the default amazon search.

I like Mint, but the packages can outdated. I do a clean re-install every six months, and rarely run into issues. But, never say never. I remember like a year and a half ago, I had a pretty new install of mint, and was trapped in absolute dependency hell trying to get fucking AUDACITY to work. One of the most popular packages, but there was some obscure problem with pulseaudio or ALSA and my hardware. I still have flashbacks to those terminal screens.

>I like Mint, but the packages can outdated.

They generally become updated around 6 months after ubuntu releases. Usually for the sake of being known to be stable.? Then the distributions releases are made suitable for use with their distributions, packages, dependencies that work with their distributions. Mate, KDE,etc. The distributions like mint will work on these for their releases in the meantime before they officially update their release and packages, in the meantime

You can or could recompile these yourself, likely without much issue with dependencies if you wanted to keep packages up to date yourself without much isssue. I used to update packages that require openssl to be updated when they were not updated in a timely manner. I do not care for ubuntu or many distros based on ubuntu. I did like Mepis as an all time favorite for a pretty long time. I believe it always kept up up to date with ubuntu
updates. Package releases.

I recently had to move cross country and to stay under max luggage weight I took my PC apart and took it on my carry on.

I put it back together but now its not producing any video.
It's starting up fine but doesn't send video signal regardless of what monitor or cable I try.
The fan on the video card does startup for like 5 seconds when you turn the system on then it stops, so I know it's getting some power.
It seems that I might've connected the cables wrong because I don't knowcable im doing.
It's the 2014 asud essentio series.
I'm gonna post a few pics in hopes that someone spots my error.
Thanks for any help and SLAYER to you all

This.

If you have an onboard video card next to your fancy pants video card try using that.

It should issue a beep or noise of some kind and start to POST.
Look up the specific POST for your mobo. Start there and work backwards.
>>
ErnestWorthingbanks.maq - Mon, 28 Oct 2019 17:21:55 EST F/iTqYS1 No.122558 Reply
Whatever the case, one would boot up using onboard video first before putting a video card back in by default. Experience is, that how they want it. Even if it seems
it should work like it did before. All other hardware should be no issue.

Windows, may have to go to 'device manager' and look for yellow exclamation points on the video drivers. May be able windows to update driver or if not remove offending drivers and reboot and update with video card. Or install drivers from website if that does not work.

I'm getting unprompted text to speech audio on my computer, and I can't figure out why.

It's happened twice so far. Earlier today my computer said "like you could ever satisfy me with that tiny penis", female text to speech voice. Then a moment ago it said something else, still female but too fast for me to completely catch it.

I'm fine with my computer insulting me sexually, but it needs to do it in a way that's between the two of us, not out loud. Is this some kind of program? nothing shows up in task manager that isn't usually there. Any idea whats going on?

is a 17 3 inch gaming laptop for $800-$1200 quiet when not playing games?

ASUS TUF FX705DT or Acer Nitro 5 17,3 for example that have gtx 1650 and 512gb ssd ... currently have a Lenovo y720 which is super quite when the fans are not running ... Kan one also expect a 17 3 inch like the ones above to be pretty quiet as well when not running high demanding apps?

And would you rather have a good 17 3 inch laptop or a 15 6 one assuming you wont plug it in to external monitor?

In reality it's the people. People who hate arab entities, that chop peoples hands off for stealing. Yet say, we should chop the hands off thieves in the US. We already have a justice system. why screw it up any more than the part that are screwed up.

The comes worse than Bush, Trump. Who serves no logical purpose in government. And people still feed off that. Who on the republican side is planning to run against trump, nobody, while Democrats have a list of people to research and make actual decisions. Like Bush said this would be much easier if it were a dictatorship. trump demands 'loyalty.' Right wingers are just plain shit in politics. Even the ones that speak against him, because they brought him and the country where it is at today. I do not feel sorry for people that helped lead us here. The make America great again. Trump said, the world hates America. Bush said the world will buy America.

It's ok though, if they say and do what they do because their 'cult-like' followers don't question themselves their party or in reality even question Democrats.

Last time I was around a good computer was when Nvidia released the 290GTX and it's time I made myself a good station. In my extended absence, I didn't focus on parts, hype, and etcetera - thus, I've fallen behind.

The PC I'm trying to build is intended for streaming, gaming, rendering, and recording while keeping a low temperature. I am not trying to go all out either and I'm trying to be around the price of 2k. I can go higher or lower, just don't want to if it's avoidable.

I was thinking of having a SSD hub station or something like divided drives for separate programs to write on so the CPU doesn't have to look through a 1TB C drive while accessing DLLs.

Don't want to be extravagant, just a modest build that can do gaming on a game like Black Desert Online or Rainbow Six Siege, while recording and streaming that can also do great while rendering.

And if you guys got any tips for coolant, show me the way. Trying to get a clear view in today's market... So many people trying to shove things in my face. Feels like I'm an altar boy.

If you don't want to think too hard you can just copy someone else's build: https://pcpartpicker.com/guide/

If you want to be analytical, start with your core component performance requirements. Most people just look at a few benchmarks, pick out the few things they know they want, and then just buy whatever is on sale. Unless you're pushing up against some constraint, don't overthink it.

The USB-A connector was originally designed to be reversible but that feature has been removed prior to the release of the standard as a cost cutting measure.
Now we have a non-reversible connector in a reversible housing.

We just have to wait for another decade or so before it's finally gone and USB-C is ambiguous.
Why are there new devices with USB-A & micro USB-B?
Cost, there is still a lot of stock of these connectors in warehouses and they are cheaper than a USB-C connector, and you can get away with leaving out the cable since every consumer has a shit-ton of them.

Interestingly I don't own a single USB-C to USB-C cable, yet.

I do agree about the USB B thing though. It was standard as the device connector for AGES.

Then we started having devices too thin to put them on, and that shit gave way to USB-A to USB-A cables.

Also despite USB-B 3.x being by FAR the sturdiest connector I haven't seen it on a goddamn thing.

USB-C is a pretty necessary thing though, because micro USB-B 3.1 was UTTER DOGSHIT.

One I might mention says 60gig a month cap. But not monitored. riiighhht
I have work downloads that almost reaches that within a day or two.

Nord has been pretty decent. No issues, except they advertise all over the place. The terms of service are pretty liberal, but, a few minor things to consider. The software had generally screwed with other things. It leveled out eventually. They added rpm in downloads. Didn't get
a chance to check that out. Pure vpn, sounds pretty bad, like really
bad, as mentioning the 60 gig a month.

Reality, a vpn is pretty cheap to actually run. The service as a whole is a different story.

One needs a service that they can se the servers that are connected and can connect to individually. Not just, a button you press to connect to their best server, one for p2p, one for 'privacy.' Your should be able to see what server ip you are connected connecting to.
