What sort of small hacks have you thrown together to solve small problems?

> have a script that kills all my torrents when the VPN goes down. It just watches tun0 and then runs a killall on a couple programs when that dies.
> made some small modifications to screenkeys that says what some hotkeys do for recording some videos. So now it says "Ctrl-Z (Undo)" instead of just "Ctrl-Z".

I think we all throw together artless solutions like this, and I was just wondering what sorts of things other people get up to.

Does the client let you pick which adapter to use? Tixati does and you can pick the VPN client. If it disconnects your torrents all stop.

Building my own hyper-visor visualization host from scratch using Arch Linux and KVM. Currently have Windows 10 installed on an Msata card that is a pcie sata card being passed through to the container along with a 1080 ti gpu and a usb 3.0 card. I will make my host os clean and base it like qubes os and make remove it's network capability. I will have an openwrt server with the NIC passed through to it and use it to distribute internet amongst my VMs and also make my host update over one of those servers as-well since it doesn't have LAN. I will have multiple template VMs for different linux distros and then different snapshots for different purposes all using libvirt sandbox to only share the x session for the requested application instead of the entire Desktop Environment. All this and it will be a multi user host instead of a single user like qubes. A super computer for the family. Managing all vpns, cell phones, back ups and and anything else your family needs. Gaming, surveillance, weather, homework etc. I want virtual android and IOS nodes that your phone will interact with over 4G if your signal is adequate. So not quite a small every day hack, but a bunch of medium sized projects crammed into my life's dream. A super computer in every home.

That's super weird. I wonder if somethings borkt in the importer. This sort of thing used to happen to me before the linux version of the editor had a proper blender import.

I assume you tried importing an .fbx? If that doesn't work, my best advice is to reinstall unity... maybe something's just wrecked in your install.

What version of windows? Like does it have software that originally came with the computer.

Do a new clean install with an untouched windows. I have found Dell,
etc, help programs, maintaince programs, driver updaters, from the
manufacturer makes windows fail. As well, basic manufacturer
programs screw things up. If yes, find a clean copy of win7 pro
and install that. Laptop, get specific drivers from MS optional

The most sane distro is NixOS or GuixSD if you want absolute minimalism in terms of there's just one text file you have to edit, and it contains your entire system configuration. To understand it go on Google Scholar and look up NixOS or Guix papers esp the orig functional package management paper.

You can also use competing schedulers for the linux kernel if interested

And if you want really experimental minimalism then try the following
>Install Guix package manager
>Use NetBSD rumpkernels

This is about as experimental as you can currently get with a working amateur system to do crazy shit you never thought was possible.

>There is actually a reason why used macbooks are pretty good: Often they aren't somebodies main machine and hence don't see heavy use.
Except that it isn't abuse that renders Macs unusable. It's design flaws, as comprehensively covered by noted scholar and gentleman Louis Rossman: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AUaJ8pDlxi8

GeorgeBridgenure.htm - Fri, 15 Jun 2018 04:15:59 EST uKesPj7/ No.121863 Reply
Search "proxy lists: samair.ru that should bring up lists of sites. Try to search port 443, ssl, anonymous or elite proxies. SSL if the site uses ssl. Do "proxy test" to see if your IP is forwarded. If you get lucky with port:443 you can find proxies that are like encrypted, https, not just a request for a ssl site, but a proxy that is encrypted between you and the proxy you found. Socks proxies are good. If you pick proxies from like the middle east, if you find good ones they would last longer because nobody really wants to touch them. Transparent proxies may forward you IP on default port but port :443 may have client to host encryption that is encrypted but does not forward your Ip address. Forget what type of proxies did this by default atm. Using online proxy checkers, some, likely most harvest other peoples efforts finding a working proxy and
sell them or post them to promote their 'proxy list services.' Find a decent proxy switcher program to check proxies on your own. Ultimately find security type sites to see if the proxy
you have is SSL aware if you are visiting https sites, anf that it does not forward you real IP address. I crammed everything together but it's pretty basic. SSL proxies generally, just
request HTTPS sites route them to you without forwarding your IP address to the remote site, anonymous proxies may request SSL sites, I forget, but will not forward your IP. But may keep logs. Transparent proxies likely will forward you IP, know your own IP before you venture.

Eh, just stuff from the past. There are google proxies all over the place, why? I don't know.

Hope this kinda makes sense to anybody interested. It's late here so I just threw this together.

OpennDns, DnsCrypt. Proven better than ISPs servers. Faster browsing. Cannot log
sites you visit. Well difficult with opendns, basically impossible with dnscrypt.

Who needs government, that is what this is really all about, having ISPs by default record sites one visits by their IP address. Make their control less
capable by using encryption. Dns, Vpn, etc,

Just moved country, main rig isnt booting and don't know why, so in the meantime I've beefed up a spare rig well beyond the specs which the case is designed for.

Too many drives to fit? Extra drives chilling out the back of the case seated on books

Too many fans? Added fan controller and gaffa taped fans in place (case has space of only one tiny fan...) and left the case wall off

What to do with ~$500 dollars: upgrade old PC or buy a PS4 Pro?

So I could throw an i5 4460 (would rather 4670 but i don't see any new for less than $350), a GTX 1050 ti 4G and 8GB ram in my 3+ year old mid-range build which would let me run modern games at 1080p a lot better (currently have a GTX 660 2GB, one of the i3 at 3.40 and only 8GB ram) for about $500. Or I could buy a PS4 Pro 1TB and a few games for that same amount.

It's E3 and tomorrow is also June 10th which is Amazon Prime day, and I've got a $100 gift card at Amazon that I've been sitting on. So potentially, there could be even better deals on components/consoles tomorrow. I'm stuck because I really can't afford to do both. My PC is running fine but upgrading it would let me play some games in my Steam library at much better framerates that I've been waiting to play for a bit, but I'd also like to play some of the Playstation exclusives and the Pro seems like it would be a nice living room fixture for the next 5 years or so...

Not sure where to go, I'm leaning towards the PC upgrade but it is probably going to depend on tomorrow's deals.

Well if used CPUs that have been tested are okay (i've never bought one used), Amazon has some options too, and some of the sellers have high satisfaction ratings with 1000+ sales... so maybe it would be fine? I mean this 4670k for about $150 is pretty tempting...

I'll have to check ebay too.
AlbertBellerdock.udf - Mon, 11 Jun 2018 16:38:46 EST ds4nWEyb No.121854 Reply
Not only are used CPUs okay, but performance increases are such small increments these days that they're really good value.

If you can catch an enterprise level CPU dump wave you can pick up SERIOUSLY beefy old 2011v1 or 2011v2 Xeon CPUs that kick ass and have a shitload of cores.

The trick is just to get in on it before the motherboards run out. At some point I was considering it. The unlocked 12 core xeons were 80 bucks a pop but the dual socket motherboard to match it was over $450. I was a little late.
JarvisCrundlespear.dwg - Mon, 11 Jun 2018 17:59:27 EST XDzQfX5P No.121856 Reply
yeah, i ended up getting a 4670k for about $170 and a new GTX 1060. I don't have a 1440p monitor or anything so I should be set for awhile. Pretty stoked to throw them in, should be here in a couple of days.

Thanks for the advice /tech/, I honestly wouldn't have even thought to go for a used CPU had I not checked in here first.
