Skype - Away when inactive Ignore Report View Thread Reply

I always thought it worked as such: if you don't touch the keyboard or mouse after X minutes then you'll be seen as Away, period.

Someone else who owns a Mac (I don't know shit about them) tells me that 3rd party programs can keep both their Mac and Skype 'awake'. He actually got more specific, implying that if he were to receive Facebook messages for example, it would probably reset the timer and even pull him out of the 'Away' status on Skype making him appear as 'Online' again.

tl;dr Can things like receiving Facebook messages keep both your Mac awake and keep your Skype status online, even if you're not interacting with it?

PS: Yes, I'm trying to find if somebody's bullshitting and ignoring my ass.

Thanks!

Sure, if skype can receive instant messages, as well it is a phone service.
I would definitely say it is always active as long as the computer is on.
As well as a service, it would be active in the background when the
computer is off as well.

I've had a Galaxy S5 for about a year now and its done me great up until a few days ago. the screen is cracked as well as majorly fucking up.

I dont need such a big phone that isnt comfortable to use with one hand. I'm looking for something with a smaller screen with the same performance or greater than the s5. something that isnt slow in 2017 and can handle everyday apps just fine for around $200

What would you guys reccomend? and is the iPhone 5s still good today for the money?

If you up your budget by about 30 bucks you can get a ZTE Blade v8 Pro which has pretty good specs for the price.
Dual camera so you can take bokeh pics (if you're into that)
good processor,
3GB ram
8MP front camera
compatible with 5GHz wifi (AC)

I was gonna buy it, but alas ZTE locked the bootloader so there's no way to root, which is a deal breaker for me.

But if you don't care about that it's a damn good phone for the price.

That is just part of the stock android options, but it seems ZTE has locked access when trying to use adb commands to unlock the bootloader for rooting, as no root is available.

Just want some feedback on this modular build I'm making. Everything initially being used will be upgraded eventually... But for now I'm not trying to go all out.
> B250 ASRock Fatal1ty Performance
> Pentium G4560 3.5 GHz
> Nvidia 1060

I didn't list the RAM because it's just fucking RAM. I'm not discrediting its importance, it's just not important for what I'm talking about today. Just assume I've got 2x16 sticks.

I also didn't list hard drives because I am drawing blanks on them so if anyone has some cheap but wonderful ideas, I'm all eyes and ears.

I'm not trying to play processor intensive games. Just some shit like EQ2 and then Ashes of Creation once I upgrade the CPU. Yes I know there are better CPUs but with the I-9 and the AMD Thread ripper coming out, I'll wait for that to come out before upgrading.

Not trying to spend more than 700 USD because I'd probably revamp my build at that point and probably end up spending more money than necessary for a rig to play ancient games.

It is still a waste of money. There are what 5-6 major components to a computer.

Why not just wait 6 months when you can buy everything outright and save at least half your money. Buying with the intention of upgrading is a waste. No matter how you slice it. Build something to last 3-4 years.

And 4k looks like shit too, about 2560×1440 is the zen between looking real and looking completely artificial. 4k just has way too much pixel density to look decent in my opinion.

Why not wait? How about because you don't want to? Sounds like a good reason to me. You can sell used but current parts on ebay for around 90% of what you paid. Also there's nothing wrong with how 4K looks. Saying 2K looks real and 4K looks artificial puts you squarely in full retard territory. I'm going to assume that bought a 2K screen, have buyer's remorse, and now need to defend that purchase. Maybe some day you will just learn to like what you have and not worry so much about what other people choose.

Nope I only have a 100 dollar sony tv for a monitor that is 720. I've gamed and watched shit on many different displays. Plasma still has the best image. 4k is too crisp to do anything but give a headache after a number of hours and "2k" is the best medium.

I bet you're American. You guys always get so hung up on the next biggest and best thing. There will come a point when the pixel density is just too much to look anything but artificial. Maybe people want to watch something that looks unreal. I don't. Real life doesn't look that clear, so why do I want to watch something that looks like I have eagle vision?

But whatever, call me an idiot, waste your money and live a life of debt until you die old and working. I'm still perfectly fine at 720p. Elitist.

Hi,

Windows 8.1, Samsung NP770Z7E-S01PL laptop (shit series, would not recommend, you will kill yourself trying to maintain it).

Problem: computer randomly shuts off. To be more exact, happened while gaming. I had a gaming session of 3-4 hours. I thought something might be overheating, so I opened my laptop, cleaned everything, dusted off with canned air, replaced thermal paste. Nothing really changed, the GPU and CPU maintain a maximum temp of ~90 degrees (the laptop CPUs maximum maintainable temp is 115 degrees, like wtf). I don't think the problem is overheating, because then I wouldn't have been able to play for that much time without crashing?

I heard a thing about no pagefile being the cause of this, so thinking of giving it a try.

Any ideas? All drivers up-to-date. What else?

Questions -

1 - Is torrenting a thing still, and how do you get on a decent site now?

2 - Conversely, any apps out there that can snag the video stream and dump it for conversion later?

Torrenting is absolutely still around. For finding torrents that don't require an invite, I would recommend searching 1337x.to which is a search engine that scours many public torrent sites. If you want to get an invite to a site I would recommend joining an irc of the group, or if you're desperate enough, going to circlejerk's r/invites and requesting an invite from there.

Here's a flowchart of various torrent sites/trackers for all of your needs:

If you're opening folders directly, Windows does this by default. If you're opening a window and then navigating to a folder, Windows will let you have as many Windows as you want and there's probably no reasonable way to limit it. There are some freeware alternatives to Explorer you can look into though.

>windows does this by default
only if the starting window's addresses matches that of an already open window

if you reach an existing window's address via forward, back, or up, it doesn't collapse it

I can imagine why that's not done though, because the code to monitor this, while not particularly complex (one process to monitor open windows addresses), can lead to glitches, and some people may not want disappearing windows (you might for example traverse (up, up, up) in one window to grab a file to move to the other window - when the middle up leads to the same address, and then have one window collapse when you need it open)

I need help. I'm setting up my multi monitor desktop using xrandr commands in /usr/share/sddm/scripts/Xsetup. And when I get to sddm, everything is fine. When I get to my desktop, something has set my leftmost monitor from 1920x1200 to 1080 and attempted to add a 50hz mode line. I recognize those settings as my previous settings, which were set the same way. But I removed the old script that did that and I've searched for "1600x1200_50.00" throughout my entire system.

My /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d is empty. I don't know where these phantom settings are coming from. My last hope is that nvidia somehow grabbed those settings and stored them somewhere and keeps re applying them...

I recently found out that Thinkpads have official support for swapping Fn and Ctrl keys, putting Ctrl where it should be on the edge of the keyboard. Older Thinkpads have third party firmware hacks and some Thinkpads and Macbooks (the only other laptops with the Fn key in the wrong place) have some unofficial support for this in software. I don't remember the last time I was this happy about something so stupid. I guess I hit Ctrl way more than I realized.

So what do you guys make of the hype? There's only a few more hours before the review embargos lift and we'll finally get to see independent benchmarks. I'm really hoping AMD can pull of what they're promising because the Dekstop CPU market has been pathetic these last few years and this will really shake things up if the gains AMD is claiming prove true.

Higan is a horrendously inefficient (yeah, I know they're going for 100% accuracy but there comes a point where "good enough" is good enough and you can play 99% of all SNES games accurately enough on 1/100th the power it takes to run Higan on Snes9X) and CEMU is still in early development and they only way to get it up to decent speeds is brute force and even then it's optimized to run on 3 threads so you'll still be better off with a moderately clocked 4 core part rather than a high-clocked 2 core part with hyperthreading.

My whole point is that for what little the 7350k can do, it's overkill for the job because the added clock speed won't make it vastly superior to a cheaper part like the G4560 that can get the job done in a "good enough" manner. The extra $100 you're investing in just the 7350k, combined with the requirement of the high-end Z mobo it takes to overclock it as well as a decent cooler will bring you up to around $400 for the whole package (not including RAM, GPU, Storage, or any peripherals) versus $150 or so for the Pentium system. The extra 20% performance simply isn't worth the extra 160% cost it takes to get there. This is what makes it such a lousy value proposition. What's worse is you can get a system based off an i5 7500 with a lower end mobo (since you're not overclocking it) with a stock cooler for less than $350 and you'll have nearly identical single-threaded performance with significantly improved multi-threaded performance. Not only can you build a comparable Pentium system for significantly less but you can actually build a better i5 system for less. The cost of the i3 7350k makes no sense by any metric

What's putting sand in my vagina is that you're ignorantly giving extremely bad advice based on a self-defeating premise that it's okay to waste money on performance you'll never see. I'm sorry that the Sub-$200 CPU market is so fucked but the i3 7350k isn't the magic CPU it appears as on paper. When you start factoring in what else you can buy and the high-end parts that i3 requires to take advantage of it's overclockability, the 7350k just loses all of its appeal.

I'm not reading all that you sad little man. I'm sorry that poor marginal value raped your mother and burned your house down, but the fact is the 7350K is the cheapest way to get the fastest single threaded performance and there's nothing left to say.

No, you buy a used, unlocked i5 for $150 or less and overclock the piss out of it. That's the cheapest way to get the "fastest single threaded performance". end of story. Maybe if you're paying MicroCenter prices, I could see the temptation but at close to $200, the high clock speed isn't enough to make it compelling.

You might as well be arguing that somebody should buy an Ariel Atom as their daily commuter because " it's the cheapest, fastest way to go around the nurburgring". Yes, it's does what it claims to do in a very specific, niche context but you're sacrificing a whole lot of general usability for the sake of top-end performance that will go largely wasted due to the bottlenecks caused by its core count. If all you want to do is browse the web and play old games, buy a cheaper part. If you want a well-rounded machine for more complex, modern tasks, buy a different part with more cores and less hertz, and if you need the most performance you can get and money is an issue for you, buy used. Don't waste money on a niche product that over-performs in one area and under-performs in another key area. Please take your bad advice somewhere else.

Last time I was around a good computer was when Nvidia released the 290GTX and it's time I made myself a good station. In my extended absence, I didn't focus on parts, hype, and etcetera - thus, I've fallen behind.

The PC I'm trying to build is intended for streaming, gaming, rendering, and recording while keeping a low temperature. I am not trying to go all out either and I'm trying to be around the price of 2k. I can go higher or lower, just don't want to if it's avoidable.

I was thinking of having a SSD hub station or something like divided drives for separate programs to write on so the CPU doesn't have to look through a 1TB C drive while accessing DLLs.

Don't want to be extravagant, just a modest build that can do gaming on a game like Black Desert Online or Rainbow Six Siege, while recording and streaming that can also do great while rendering.

And if you guys got any tips for coolant, show me the way. Trying to get a clear view in today's market... So many people trying to shove things in my face. Feels like I'm an altar boy.

If you don't want to think too hard you can just copy someone else's build: https://pcpartpicker.com/guide/

If you want to be analytical, start with your core component performance requirements. Most people just look at a few benchmarks, pick out the few things they know they want, and then just buy whatever is on sale. Unless you're pushing up against some constraint, don't overthink it.
