If you're opening folders directly, Windows does this by default. If you're opening a window and then navigating to a folder, Windows will let you have as many Windows as you want and there's probably no reasonable way to limit it. There are some freeware alternatives to Explorer you can look into though.

>windows does this by default
only if the starting window's addresses matches that of an already open window

if you reach an existing window's address via forward, back, or up, it doesn't collapse it

I can imagine why that's not done though, because the code to monitor this, while not particularly complex (one process to monitor open windows addresses), can lead to glitches, and some people may not want disappearing windows (you might for example traverse (up, up, up) in one window to grab a file to move to the other window - when the middle up leads to the same address, and then have one window collapse when you need it open)

I need help. I'm setting up my multi monitor desktop using xrandr commands in /usr/share/sddm/scripts/Xsetup. And when I get to sddm, everything is fine. When I get to my desktop, something has set my leftmost monitor from 1920x1200 to 1080 and attempted to add a 50hz mode line. I recognize those settings as my previous settings, which were set the same way. But I removed the old script that did that and I've searched for "1600x1200_50.00" throughout my entire system.

My /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d is empty. I don't know where these phantom settings are coming from. My last hope is that nvidia somehow grabbed those settings and stored them somewhere and keeps re applying them...

I recently found out that Thinkpads have official support for swapping Fn and Ctrl keys, putting Ctrl where it should be on the edge of the keyboard. Older Thinkpads have third party firmware hacks and some Thinkpads and Macbooks (the only other laptops with the Fn key in the wrong place) have some unofficial support for this in software. I don't remember the last time I was this happy about something so stupid. I guess I hit Ctrl way more than I realized.

So what do you guys make of the hype? There's only a few more hours before the review embargos lift and we'll finally get to see independent benchmarks. I'm really hoping AMD can pull of what they're promising because the Dekstop CPU market has been pathetic these last few years and this will really shake things up if the gains AMD is claiming prove true.

Higan is a horrendously inefficient (yeah, I know they're going for 100% accuracy but there comes a point where "good enough" is good enough and you can play 99% of all SNES games accurately enough on 1/100th the power it takes to run Higan on Snes9X) and CEMU is still in early development and they only way to get it up to decent speeds is brute force and even then it's optimized to run on 3 threads so you'll still be better off with a moderately clocked 4 core part rather than a high-clocked 2 core part with hyperthreading.

My whole point is that for what little the 7350k can do, it's overkill for the job because the added clock speed won't make it vastly superior to a cheaper part like the G4560 that can get the job done in a "good enough" manner. The extra $100 you're investing in just the 7350k, combined with the requirement of the high-end Z mobo it takes to overclock it as well as a decent cooler will bring you up to around $400 for the whole package (not including RAM, GPU, Storage, or any peripherals) versus $150 or so for the Pentium system. The extra 20% performance simply isn't worth the extra 160% cost it takes to get there. This is what makes it such a lousy value proposition. What's worse is you can get a system based off an i5 7500 with a lower end mobo (since you're not overclocking it) with a stock cooler for less than $350 and you'll have nearly identical single-threaded performance with significantly improved multi-threaded performance. Not only can you build a comparable Pentium system for significantly less but you can actually build a better i5 system for less. The cost of the i3 7350k makes no sense by any metric

What's putting sand in my vagina is that you're ignorantly giving extremely bad advice based on a self-defeating premise that it's okay to waste money on performance you'll never see. I'm sorry that the Sub-$200 CPU market is so fucked but the i3 7350k isn't the magic CPU it appears as on paper. When you start factoring in what else you can buy and the high-end parts that i3 requires to take advantage of it's overclockability, the 7350k just loses all of its appeal.

I'm not reading all that you sad little man. I'm sorry that poor marginal value raped your mother and burned your house down, but the fact is the 7350K is the cheapest way to get the fastest single threaded performance and there's nothing left to say.

No, you buy a used, unlocked i5 for $150 or less and overclock the piss out of it. That's the cheapest way to get the "fastest single threaded performance". end of story. Maybe if you're paying MicroCenter prices, I could see the temptation but at close to $200, the high clock speed isn't enough to make it compelling.

You might as well be arguing that somebody should buy an Ariel Atom as their daily commuter because " it's the cheapest, fastest way to go around the nurburgring". Yes, it's does what it claims to do in a very specific, niche context but you're sacrificing a whole lot of general usability for the sake of top-end performance that will go largely wasted due to the bottlenecks caused by its core count. If all you want to do is browse the web and play old games, buy a cheaper part. If you want a well-rounded machine for more complex, modern tasks, buy a different part with more cores and less hertz, and if you need the most performance you can get and money is an issue for you, buy used. Don't waste money on a niche product that over-performs in one area and under-performs in another key area. Please take your bad advice somewhere else.

I run a community built on SMF that originated and split off from a vB community. The latter is on the outs due to the corporation that owns it having a shit business plan and not being able to maintain it. I have the feeling the site is going to disappear sooner rather than later and I was wondering if anybody here knows of some way to archive the content/posts/etc in such a way that I could integrate them either into my own community or another entirely, whether built on vB software or otherwise.

tl;dr, is it possible to "copy" content from a vB forum without having access to the database? if so, how?

yea, Sounds like these people are trying to get their services very much finalized, if not actually there already.
Just need a larger user base.

Some services overdo the, 'privacy danger thing' to get people, scare them essentially to use their service.
"ultimate privacy'

A VPN should work as designed, with it's intended uses. Privacy, anti-gov-censorship, corporate,
business usage, basic vpn service, etc.

Talked with them before this popped up. Something different.

No reason not to just get (pay) a months service to use the service instead of asking for beta testing usage.

They are just trying to ultimately succeed in this and no reason why it should not.

Apple just stopped supporting my Macbook with OSX Sierra. So that means from now on Apple will not let me download the newest sleekest version of their Operating System. I don't want to sell it because well it wont sell for enough to justify all the money I put into it.

So I want to turn it into a Linux machine, down the line; with my SSD and 16gb of RAM it should be decent. Ill probably keep OS X on a very small partiton, just because. Im wondering what Linux distro I should use, I've played around with Ubuntu before and Fedora. But Im thinking about Arch and maybe Kaili.

Mainly to catch windows 10 telemetry and auto updating,

I'm looking for a nice firewall that asks me allow/block before an outgoing or incoming connection is made.

The only ones Ive used in the past were:
  • Zone Alarm - it was decent and I may try it out again to see how it's changed in six years
  • GlassWire Free - This one is out of the question, as the free version doesnt block anything until AFTER the fact, and you have to manually go and block it instead of on-demand.

You can turn these off. Just poke around a bit. But I would recommend outpost firewall free. Just turn off windows firewall and you can control what happens

Turn off 'alerts' after you get to know it for a while, after you know know what things look like.
Your network, computer, will have constant connections, random or otherwise that your router
will drop anyway. Your router will drop connections that you or a program on your computer
did not initiate.
-
Zone alarm is lame. Over emphasized as a firewall. Built in windows firewall is better. Updates would screw an good install up. It would have every random connection, as a threat. After soo many random alerts, a popup "get the paid version, "for piece of mind" would appear.

As person says, trust what you have. I am Leary about how MS win 10 says it collects information.
I just use win 7 pro and a trusted linux distribution.

Have SSD's prices started to level off, or should I still wait to buy one?
With the way flash drives got so cheap in the last 4 years, I'm willing to be patient in order to get a better value for a large capacity SSD.

What do you think? I'm not one to frequently upgrade parts, so I'd be buying a large one and don't want to end up regretting it and wishing I'd waited.

Or don't don't forget. It isn't not an unbig deal.

Although the SSD I've had for years and only eaten 3% into its lifespan was an MLC drive and probably has a lot more write cycles overall than the triple level 3d NAND flash.

But seriously don't disable hibernate and shit unless you need the space. Just set your computer to sleep instead of hibernate. Hibernate it yourself if you want to.

>System Restore - life and performance

As someone who almost never has system restore enabled, I would literally never recommend not to have system restore enabled. The people who run with system restore off don't need to be told lol.
