Background
I run Ubuntu 17.10 on my laptop and need to upgrade it.
Use it for coding microcontrollers (so need proper USB support), Web development, and general use.
No upgrading Ubuntu never works because fuck I don't care why.

I am not a new to choosing different Linux distros, I was even one of these guys who did run gentoo on his home pc. But not any more, because well I don't want my OS to be a hobby just fucking use it.

What annoys me are the release cycle and fucking outdated packages you get.
So I like that arch has rolling updates but I am not familiar with it and I do not want to spend time doing neckbeard shit.

I'm this close to installing windows on the thing so help.

>I tried out ubuntu mate and god damn their gui sucks.
Really? I use Mint Mate, and think it's great. I wonder if the ubuntu versioin is very different?

I like Mate because it doesn't really try to re-invent anything. I think of it as a combo of OSX and XP. Most of the interface is like old windows, but then it also has support for multiple workspaces, and doesn't look terrible.

>going back to unity 7.
Every time I try unity, I nope the fuck out very quickly. It feels like OSX where they try to hide functionality from you. Or they make some random change that makes zero sense. Plus, fuck the default amazon search.

I like Mint, but the packages can outdated. I do a clean re-install every six months, and rarely run into issues. But, never say never. I remember like a year and a half ago, I had a pretty new install of mint, and was trapped in absolute dependency hell trying to get fucking AUDACITY to work. One of the most popular packages, but there was some obscure problem with pulseaudio or ALSA and my hardware. I still have flashbacks to those terminal screens.

>I like Mint, but the packages can outdated.

They generally become updated around 6 months after ubuntu releases. Usually for the sake of being known to be stable.? Then the distributions releases are made suitable for use with their distributions, packages, dependencies that work with their distributions. Mate, KDE,etc. The distributions like mint will work on these for their releases in the meantime before they officially update their release and packages, in the meantime

You can or could recompile these yourself, likely without much issue with dependencies if you wanted to keep packages up to date yourself without much isssue. I used to update packages that require openssl to be updated when they were not updated in a timely manner. I do not care for ubuntu or many distros based on ubuntu. I did like Mepis as an all time favorite for a pretty long time. I believe it always kept up up to date with ubuntu
updates. Package releases.

I have always liked avgfree, simple. But I typed in a browser some app for android and suddenly avgfree pops up, "keep you mobile phone safe" or whatever. 'Web shield' is a nice free feature, It has picked up things that were clearly located in firfox browser cache, where if not using antivirus browsing a random website under admin,
the likely hood of it taking hold would be likely. Just by visiting a website, or I guess cross-scripting?

But this popup was concerning privacy-wise.

If they do this for advertising, they are possibly scanning search terms as well. I am pretty sure their privacy policy states 'third party' whatever may have access to data. But this is lame with popups when you visit say, google play.
I have always knew they did this to an extent but. I do notice avast seems to sneak through port 80 and 443.
Which, don't have avast installed. So obvious is obvious. They had merged at some point.

Which matters none to the post. Which was about avast server connects. But that was a wrong picture to the topic. That is simply a dell vista comp which was running 7, 10 and an independent Linux distribution perfectly. Was just saving that for reference of space used by the systems to up-size the hard drive far a win 10 install. Will just run 7 in a VM. If ever needed.

On that note, I put the old hard drive in a few laptops which were totally different manufacturers and after booting it went through the hardware recognition process perfectly without issue. The 8.65 drive is the linux / drive ext4, the 2.4 is the linux swap, the 74.68 /home is ext3.
The 43 gig is win 7, the drvie 100mb is the legacy boot partiton which 7 created. The E: drive is win10 which used the 100mb drive just fine without creating a separate boot drive.

Which between the win 7 and 10, the systems uses as the primary when switching between them.
If I worded that correctly. The image was apparently from win 7.

Used ext2fsd to read/write the ext3 /home partition from windows. It does not usuallt work well if using a, ext4 partition.

Anyone have experience using a high refresh CRT on a modern PC?

I’m basically clueless, I hear different adapters can add input lag or only support certain refresh rates. Lookin to get the most out of this p220f which supports up to 166 hz

Can anyone vouch for a specific adapter?

1280x1024 makes LCD 1080p look like trash, and I'm able to run RDR2 with almost every setting maxed and a locked 75fps. Basically no motion blur because of the way CRTs display images.

Now I need to buy a backup because I'm going to be sad when this thing dies on me some day.

Hey I have a small issue. I pulled some old word files off my old laptop, it crashes when you move the mouse. Complete and total freeze. Not even any error message. Anyway, I was VERY lucky to even manage to get the files off and onto a flash, I haven't been able to replicate that event.

My problem is this, I have a newer laptop now, windows 10. I went to open my old word files to work on my stories and my retard computer is telling me now I have to sign into some bullshit faggy microsoft account? Or if not that then I have to enter my product key???? What the fuck???? The laptop was a gift???? I have no fucking product key???????? If there's no fix for this gay ass faggot shit, I'm going to use someone else's laptop and convert these from gay ass "word" files to straight up dope as fuck based and alpha Notepad files. I think libreoffice alone should be backwards compatible to your files. If not, there should be plugins that will make it work. If not, surely you can make this work. You can do anything.

I would be pressed to see if your files are still intact. If you did sign into your account, I do not see it working if the files are like around 2008? With the faggy sign in. Regardless, back these files up,
again. From the laptop. Even if they are floppy era. There are usb floppy external drives that do work well, if the files are that old.

Conqueror does work well, or close to in some systems, but it is obsolete

I've been thinking of getting a website of my own just for fun (not a chan, just for personal stuff and jokes and maybe later re-use the address+server for a lil mini-business thing), and to make an inside-joke abstract webNewspaper to make the day of some people I know. I've already checked that the address I want is free and not too expensive, but I've no idea where to go from there.
Is there any good collected page with info about just, how to run a website?
As far as I understand you would rather rent a small server-instance from some bigger company rather than selfhost and invite weird traffic to your home-network?
Also how hard would it be to set up my own mail-server on the site (is that even included when you buy an address)? Like, would it be a bad idea for a webstuff-noob like me that might misconfigure something or is it pretty straightforward (as long as you're not too daft to grok the manuals)?

This is bad, real bad.

Ubuntu tried with unity to provide a complete desktop experience with sensible default settings.
The global menu is a boon for anybody concerned about screen real-estate (13.3" laptops, etc...)
It has integration into things like cloud calendars, cloud storage, etc.
(some) touchpad & touchscreen gestures work right out of the box.
A consistent look and feel of applications that are part of the standard distribution (no ppas)
HiDPI scaling

If you want those features on for instance a Gnome desktop you can get them, but you basically have build your own configuration out of plugins and third party apps, which sucks balls.
FOSS software developers have a really questionable attitude when it comes to implementing default features and anything that works with proprietary systems. That was why Ubuntu/Unity was awesome, they didn't give a shit about the hypocritical "community" and just released stuff that works.
(ZFS on 16.04 is a another example, but unrelated)

Regardless of what else has happened, it's been nice with the Unity lovers coming out of the woodwork. Usually Linux people just talk about what they hate, not what they love.

At any rate, you should be fine. Gnome headerbars are just as space saving as global menu. We still don't know how Ubuntu will tweak gnome, but there's been global menu for gnome3 before, and it wouldn't take a lot for Canonical to do it again. Finally, if all else fails, the Unity devs haven't just dropped dead, they're committed to forking it.

I spent 9 hours straight playing a game and my screen started doing this. I have never seen this before, and my PC was not very stressed during those 9 hours so I am really just guessing here. Is this the end? I'm going to replace the video cable and if that doesn't fix it, I am just going to assume it is going to cost me more than $100 and I'll not bother fixing this old thing.

I suppose I should try out a different driver if the cable doesn't change anything?
This is the most severe case, by the way. It is not ALWAYS this bad, but it does get pretty bad at times.
