What folders do you really need to backup on windows if you're going to install a new version of it?

Back up windows? If you're doing an upgrade, you'll get a backup that you can roll back to. If you're doing a clean install, you should really format the drive in which case you would back up all of your own files and not worry about Windows. And of course you should regularly back up your own files regardless of what you're doing.

Very good, that's also an option.

>Can anyone think of a common reason to keep /Windows, or Program files/Data ?

You can do what I did which is to rename them with [OLD] at the end or something.
That way there still there if you need them, just remember to delete when you're happy everything works.

Keep anything you wan to save. Pics, etc. The rest would be mostly irrelevant as it would be overwritten. Like system files. Basic native to windows 'program files.'

Say users folder as person says appdata 'may' contain info one would want to save. Bookmarks, firefox etc. May be a pain in the rear to to upgrade with windows, the setting etc, but most programs would likely roll with an upgrade like from 7 to 10 if folder is overwritten, it would not harm overwriting these as they are recreated when deleted, but may not necessarily work
correctly replacing them after an upgrade.

As for app data say publishing software0, whatever may keep most data in it's own location, say in program files folder. You can though save certain programs files settings and contents with
native? Utilities for upgrading.

Just depends on what kind of upgrade one is trying to do.

If installing as an upgrade or in place upgrade, and not a clean install windows would create a file called windows.old , by default. As person said that would allow one to 'hopefully' revert back to it's former state if the upgrade fails. The windows.old file will help this happen. As stated when one is comfortable with the upgrade, if a few days weeks things seems well it is perfectly
safe to delete windows.old .

You should look into Veeam Endpoint Backup. It's free for personal use.

Future feferance, there are reasons. But simply copying pictures music etc to an external source is all you need. Installing windows from a new install with a fresh
untouched non-manufacturers cd is simply delete all partition, and install, click click click, and all is installed.
