Sup /tg/

Been on disability a few months now and boredom is driving me crazy so I decided to start with 40k.

My experience in tactics is none. I just kind of chose the faction that appealed to me most, that faction being Emperor's Children.

Can anyone here provide some assistance in what to buy next to round out the randomness of my forces. There's a local 40k/Warhammer club in town and when I show up I'd like to have an army that is somewhat balanced enough to have a snowballs chance in hell at winning some point in the future.

If anyone is asking why Slaanesh it's simply our commonality, intersexualty.

And yes if anyone asks, I just did a blanket search for emperor's children and bought everything that showed up in the search function.

What equipment am I gonna need for paint/assembly? Any links would be appreciated as well.

Any other knights than desecrator worth buying as well?

Any major rulebooks/codex's I'm missing out on? Any guidance would be most welcome.

And yeah I know, I just bought Vulcan cause he looks cool. Maybe I'll start a regular space collection here soon.

Board games I'm hoping will be a hit with my kids cousins they LOVE MtG so hopefully Blackstone fortress will go well.

Playing Card RPGs

I was just released from prison, and I have some interesting news to report. It turns out that A.) a lot of the guys in there are big fans of tabletop RPGs, and B.) any sort of dice are typically considered contraband (I guess because they are associated with gambling?) and are very hard to come by.

So I started thinking about other possible randomization methods. Although dice are banned, for some reason playing cards are always allowed.

So my question is: are there any robust RPG systems out there that use playing cards? And, if not,0do you have any suggestions for how to create such a system?

I forgot another randomization method I have heard about from friends in prison. Spinners. Like the kind from a kid's board game. Most prisons permit them. Get a piece of cardboard or paper, draw a circle, partition the circle and write your numbers. Take another piece of paper and a paperclip, or a rock and a pencil, whatever you have on hand, to make an indicator and a base to swivel on.

Use a bag or some other container with tokens for every outcome. Relatively easy to make with some paper or cardboard and a ruler (to make even sized tokens).

The Arkham Horror cardgame uses this system and it works pretty well. Especially because you can customize the difficulty by removing/adding certain tokens.

I had my "session 0" with my players, and the only feedback I got was "We would like to face a lich eventually" as an adventure goal/hook. One of my players is playing a valkyrie type cleric.

Post any and all things valkyrie and lich related. Campaign ideas, adventure hooks, images, module suggestions, spells or magic items. It is all welcome and wanted.
We're playing 3.5e and I'm starting everyone at level 5, but don't let that system or level limit your suggestions. Small picture dump incoming.

It's one of those subjective things that varies with setting and edition. It's actually one of those things that's best hashed out in a session 0 because the players will invariably end up debating something that's actually known by their characters. If it's not known then tell them "no one's checked" though given the existence of several divination spells and deities someone has checked.

So lich ideas:

If you were doing 5th I'd say do TOA. But there's tonnes of classic liches. Most liches are unethical scholars not megalomaniacs though so while they tread on mortals they do so to achieve something. Bear that in mind. They are geniuses above and beyond human levels of intellect. Not much beyond but enough that they're cleverer than you. When running a creature like that you're not going to be able to employ tactics at their level. Metagame a little. Not a lot, don't DM vs Players it but this guy is smarter than you and you need a leg up to get on his level. probably more.

Don't hard cheat and build a perfect counter to what your players turn up with on the day unless they lay it all for him to see. If he has scouts or spies and any lived after seeing the party in action then he'll know their class based on their abilities (assuming they used some signature abilities) and equipment. So he'll know what their best and worst saves are likely to be (combined with their obvious wit, speed, build whatever) he won't necessarily get it perfect but he should at least be countering their class. If he doesn't do that after a turn or two he should figure it out. He can't read their character sheets but he will know anything they've let his network know about and he'll have a good idea what to expect. Don't have him fall for stupid shit. He'll have friends, make sure he has a strategy of some sort.

His lair will be defensible, the terrain will have more problems for players to manage than opportunities. He won't fight them in the throne room unless he funnels them into a narrow entrance and makes them run up a slope (and more). The players will have to think about how to overcome this or whether to power through. He'll have cover where it suits him and maybe some other hazards which are aimed in such a way that they hurt attackers and won't put him in danger unless he ends up out of position a long way.

If all else fails have a couple of crazy but likely gambits. I made an elder orb who had several abilities that would conveniently be exactly where the players when if they triggered. He just knew that he'd end up facing enemies there, he'd done the maths. Don't overuse it, and remember to account for it like any other attack when you do. He had one use of that and several other gambits. He is smarter than you. I was honest with my players when I sprung that what I was doing and that also that particular trick only happens once in this fight. It wasn't a gotcha, it was more like a spell or ability.

Speaking of network, while he won't run an empire he's causing trouble enough the players come for him so he needs to be up to something. He'll have a few trusted hirelings who deal with other mortals as his lieutenants (maybe corrupt gang, maybe he's even quite civil with librarians who give him access to their tomes) and maybe a few less conventional pets and allies, devils or demons of Orcus, lesser undead, constructs, monstrosities, maybe lesser dragons, etc. He wants knowledge or power for it's own end so he will have spies. He won't have a national network but a few relatively autonomous and reliable (and smart) allies and if the players ping his radar he'll probably have them observe before he acts. Maybe let the players have a chance to catch one or more of the spies. He will also use divination and scry to some extent.

In that case he'll play defensive while he scopes them. If he knows they're coming he will have memorised a good spell list for them and prepared a magic item or trap or two. Maybe even spring a simulacrum on them.

The lich isn't super threatened if his phylactery is safe so he will probably engage the players on his terms once they start to be a real threat. The final fight is when he'll throw everything at them including minions. But remember he has little to fear even if he dies, unless he has reason t…

PC had a bad experiences at today's sessions.
  • Slipped and crashed on a wooden bed frame.
  • Knocked a tray over and it broke on the concrete floor.
  • Dropped a ladle of soup at the dining table with the king.
All minor things but it added up. Damn the dice! Last time I have a low dex PC.

Try Abalone! The rules are dead simple, but the strategy is chess meets sumo wrestling. Basically your goal is to push the other player's pieces off of the board, but you can only move them by pushing a longer chain than they are defending with.

For a non-strategy game, Suspend is an amazing balancing game for when you are burnt out on Jenga, and is pretty much just better in every way. You can play conservatively to get rid of your own pieces, or dangerously to try to force your opponent to make an error and knock down the stack

>A 110 IQ person is smart, and a 120 IQ person is a genius. Less than 2% of all people have
no. 15 IQ is one standard deviation. The IQ to int mapping works pretty well.Slap a 0 on the end and it works well. But then you realise that actually 120 is actually where you start to notice "this guy is kind of smart". And 12 is where the person is discernably smarter to the point where it makes a measurable difference. If you were right then someone mechanically no different (10 and 11) are obviously measurable in real life. Someone with an INT of 19 is 6 standard deviations above the norm.

Physical stats are the same. An olympic athlete is several standard deviations out. A pound might be the difference for a marathon runner but combat isn't marathon running and they aren't strength characters. Top long distance runners aren't just lean, they have little elastic bands on their arms. But melee combat isn't that. It's short (1 minute usually) bursts of action with lots of walking 3mph in between.

Veterans have 14 strength and the guards of cities have units of them. You need 15 strength to wear plate without your combat effectiveness reduced. So you're saying that basically no one ever wore plate? Firefighters wear 60lbs of gear. Soldiers carry body armour, rations and stuff. By core rules each point of str increases your unencumbered carry by 5 pounds so that machine gunner is 3 points higher. Lifting weights is very different from encumbrance too. Being able to lift 10 pounds more doesn't mean carrying 10 pounds more. It makes a little difference.

We did lose our second cleric and our Paladin because of real life.
Our group is:
Dwarven Kensai Monk
'Light Elf Light Domain Cleric of Lathander
Red Dragonborn Redemption Paladin
Human Lore Bard/Rogue
Eldarin Abjuration Wizard

I'm the player with the high stat rolls but I've been using stuff to buff my party and the occasional Fireball when needed.
Wish us luck.

You're right about it being a good way to teach players not to be retards though actually. I didn't think about it that way. I'm not used to people being that dumb to be honest. I mean the couple of times they've been close to that stupid they've not forgotten the results.

Though if someone plays a tiefling and says "I just want to be a devil person" fine, if they want racism and then go around insulting everyone as the pariah people though... surely that'd have consequences too.

Most people like something somewhere between a farce that derails within minutes and epic fantasy like a tabletop version of baldur's gate but there where point varies though, just because someone sits slightly more "seriousward" than you it doesn't mean they're an anal rules stickler (that's my job I try not to take it to the table too much). The rules are useful as framework to give the story cohesion and tension, they are flexible. The unwritten rules like tone (seriousness, how coddling or vindictive the DM is, what themes are and aren't okay) are the most important and they're not the ones in the book anyway.

Now that varies from table to table. But at the end of the day if I spend ages negotiating schedules I think of the 6 of us 3 work 9 to 5s but that's about to drop to 2 in 5 because life to spend quality time with a group of my friends of course I'm going to take it seriously.

Now I just chuck crazy encounters at them. My imagination and ability to manage the enemies becomes my limit and it just challenges them. You have so many tools. My players have an understanding that if they use bullshit so will I so it stops the arms race. And it's the most fun I've had as a DM in ages. I go nuts and let my creativity be the main limit. I recently declined to throw a kraken at them not because they can't handle it (they probably can) but because it'd need worthy minions and I think a kraken priest and 2 elementals and 20 cultists thrown in might have been too much. They're 17 and the wizard has meteor swarm so that's probably not true now.

Anyway last session I had them do a sort of gameshow fight sequence for a ring of wishes with a snarky sphinx "host". They created a paradox with the pheonix egg (the myrmodon with hold monster/maelstrom made them laugh too), fought waves of acid immune creatures (including yugiloth and a black dragon which made the paladin shit himself a bit) as acid dispensers burst out the ground, fought a huge warm of blood suckers (but no vampires as they expected) and a horde of spectres, wraiths and spirit trolls (can all go through walls) in a maze. Except the maze was an illusion anyway and they could have also just gone through the walls.

Next: Ancient dragon, massive research facility. I've written most of it but I need to work out how the engineering wing will work. The engineers have been tasked with creating tools that can be distributed in large quantity to some of their soldiers to help combat the main threat to the enemy army the party. Not all the inventions will be complete or viable for copying as that'd be game breaking but these guys are going to be set up to take the edge off their strengths. Having to balance narrative world breaking repurcussions "this is something grunts could use" and challenge is going to be hard. Working on it.

guys help how do I delete a post

On a more serious note, I currently have a green/black Food deck that works surprisingly well. The key is to have a steady token generator which you can then either sacrifice for a minor form of immortality, card advantage or killer giants.
