Why are there so many "rules light" indie systems? I jive with rules lite stuff, but it seems so over saturated at the moment. Pre 3rd edition rules had a big comeback in the past 10 years. They're much lighter in rules than 3rd or 4th and also much more clear wargames and dungeon exploration games. An advantage to a lighter system is you can actually proper challenge your players because they won't hysterically cry over hours of lost work if their characters die. idk, my experience of pathfinder players is they're become offended if you ask them what light source they're using in a dark cave and get angry at challenging combats, real low player skill outside of character building tbh. >> Martha Dollernat - Fri, 03 Sep 2021 22:55:49 EST VULxri+P No.29711 Reply 1630724149366.jpg -(12762B / 12.46KB, 250x250) Thumbnail displayed, click image for full size. >>29678Ginger female elfs are swell! When you try to cover all the bases and simulate every situation, you're basically doing the same thing that every other crunch-heavy system does, even if you do it a bit differently. But a lot of rules-light systems aren't doing anything new, they're just ultralight D&D, everyone keeps remaking Tunnels&Trolls but none of them are actually as good as Tunnels&Trolls.

The first is Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell, which is styled after a Georgian-era English novel a la Jane Austen. "English Magic" used to be big, now it's a purely academic pursuit undertaken by wealthy, stuffy nobs, until the titular characters come along and start using it in the war against Napoleon. It's less 'i cast magic missile' and more 'i make a 14th century statue tell me its secrets', with Faustian deals with fae thrown in for fun.The other is the Bartimaeus trilogy. Magicians get their power from demons, who are really sapient entities of entropic chaos from another dimension but have developed the demonic shtick as a result of humans summoning them to do their dirty work for millennia. The trilogy is largely told from the point of view of one of these demons over the course of a fledgling magician's career. Magic use in JS&MN is kept pretty vague, but the Bartimaeus books are very up front about the ritualistic aspect of using pentagrams, runes, incantations and all that jazz. Good reads.>>29552>>29559Magic in the Discworld books is a lot of fun; it's basically fantasy radiation.Doing magic too much in a given area permeates said area with it, leading to weird shit like animals talking, time being distorted and the borders between dimensions getting frayed. One of the main recurring characters of the series is the librarian of the wizard school who was zapped into an orangutan early on and simply rolled with it. What really makes it fun is that Pratchett worked as a PR guy for nuclear power for a while.

Though for 5th edition it'd need some tweaks and that's a lot of work, so either it's got to be a one shot. Therisk is that planescape requires the players have different values and goals so you need to make sure they can handle the conflict, or give them premades who will chafe but can get along rather than tear at each other's throats. Or use the inspiration and philosophical angle but avoid that aspect. If you're not afraid of being cliche, have them undertake a spirit quest where their characters take drugs, then they're roleplaying as high characters while high, of course if this creates some weird RP that may result in their character changing as a result of the trip. Might be a bit too fourth wall.

What's a Chessmaster, a Chess Scholar, and a Chess Savante?A chessmaster has mastered chess strategy and knows the game of the board, making them a compulsive eye towards victory in predictable, set, established styles, marked by "Can I?" towards the contemplation of a challenge, with the response determining acceptance.A chess scholar has never played chess, once, even online, but has studied the game through rules and manuals and histories, and never named their own form or else dead, the killing blow from another chess scholar. A chess scholar can always beat a chessmaster, by getting them to play chess, the better the chess player, the easier the victory. They are marked by "Can't I?" from contemplation from a challenge, their retreat determined by the response.A chess savante has been schooled by their father, with a particular set of strategies imparted by the father watching the child's strategy and refusing to attempt to win, until the child watches the father's strategy and the pair trade, manipulating a chess scholar to place them with chessmasters as partners as chaff, taking chess players as bitches and punking chess scholars, the form being prison chess. The sign of a chess savante is, "Can't it, but should I?" at the sign one has been spotted, the signal that they haven't beaten their father at chess, hence they are dangerous. All three strategies function along a triple set of concepts, the historical figure of the player in the other player's mind, the scenario the figure has been placed in to align or disalign the other player, and the reference to the scenario of setting placed into the other player as the enhancer of self placing the prior pair. This determines the transformative individual that you are placing into the other player, the benefit to the other player, and the tactical wit one is taking over the other player for the image forever after from that individual, among those that the first strategy touches with the benefit, or removes with the penalty. The key to each strategy, is knowing how to break it. Only the father that taught chess, can remove the savante, by allowing the child to win, for a bet, typically a dowry for a marriage, to release the child from savantism in exchange for money for their children and family, the father's grand children, the savante meant for a spy, intelligence, counter-intelligence, or espionage agent (in various stages of criminality and legitimacy, a spy being a guerilla, intelligence being a criminal, counter-intelligence being standard intelligence officers, and espionage agents being established mercenaries that protect their past work through their acts).A chess scholar can be defeated by a strategy being renamed, thus naming the chess scholar something else, on the board. As you've noticed, the chess scholar hasn't played, and can't play, so you need a savante, to drop the change play into the right zone, for the benefit to touch the chess scholars in the range of the individual invoked, therefore your position is visible as the victims touched with benefit, hence they have to demote and play chess, to survive, disenlisting.A chessmaster is defeated by the challenge to play another live human being as a piece, by a chess scholar, always invoking Berenger's Syndrome in some form, known as a police brutality victim, a prison rape victim, a mob jump victim, a media piece victim, or otherwise a black slave from the Confederate era, also a Wiccan psychiatric victim (a Buddhist form of Confederate logic, despised by the Yakuza, Catholic Japanese that target Tong, Triads, Korean law informants, and Mossad Judeaken, other Catholic orders targeting Wiccans, namely the Order of St. Ignatius engaging, an order of German logicians made up of remedial students of literature). In each case, the piece, will commit fraud, the breaking of the piece's code, therefore undoing the plans of the chessmaster, the grander the plan, the more disastrous and public the defeat of the chessmaster. This is performed by a chess scholar, invoking the Yakuza, the association that violence should only be used on those that use violence in the course of social politics, and assert that this is the just case jurisprudence of society. A confirmed hit, will result in 'fail' being reported from the chessmaster, and the game will ensue. Most importantly, one does not have to directly invoke the code, to hide one's hand. And there you have the magnificent bastards of chess. >> Matilda Pobblecocke - Sat, 16 Jan 2021 03:44:06 EST yb657Rur No.29672 Reply >>29645How do you chess? ♔♕♖♗♘♙♚♛♜♝♞♟

It all starts with watchwolf. A 3/3 for 2 now seems like trash, but in 9th edition this was fucking unheard of. Creatures with more power than converted mana cost always had some drawback. Cant block, can only attack under certain circumstances, has to attack every round, upkeep, is removed at the end of round, always something. This motherfucker is the exact point where the game broke and turned into bullshit. 17 posts and 4 images omitted. That thing was a 0/0 that started with 6 +1/+1 tokens on it and gained them if they had attacked or blocked since your last upkeep but lost one if not.
