So there's this passage in one of Morrowind's books that basically spells out that the Daedric Prince (pretty much a god) Molag Bal outright raped Vivec, who is THE main god of that game.

Adults make games, usually. And I guess adults like to hide some real shit in their games behind words or easter eggs or whatever, even it's PG13.

Are there other examples of this?

Honestly if the game just told you or pointed out, "Hey, did you know that when you attack with low stamina you'll miss most of the time?" then it'd be fine. Most of the issues I see people having when playing Morrowind is in not knowing something that the game should've told them, but not necessarily with the game systems themselves.

If San Andreas had stuck to Liberty City instead of repeatedly increasing the stake and stupidity of its main campaign I'd maybe agree with you. It's not even the best in the series which is either Vice City or Chinatown Wars I'd also accept Bully but it's arguably not a GTA game. Saints Row 2's main campaign was also silly but it was consistent in that tone and had much better side content to make up for it not to mention full coop play from the first mission. I'll grant the difference isn't as huge as that between Morrowind and Gothic though.
>>741287
I think the tutorial might mention it in passing but I agree: it should have been written in giant unmissable letters across your screen. There's nothing wrong with dice roll combat as long as it's not a frustrating black box to your players.

Civilization Revolution (Nintendo DS)

I always forget what Nintendo DS (lite) games I own and whenever I come across this game it always manages to hold my interest for some time that I sink a few hours into the gameplay. The only downside is that I wish this game had the famous "just one more turn" but what is it about this particular Civilization title that manages to capture my interest more than any of the main titles. This is the primary reason why if I were ever going to get Civilization VI it will be for the Switch, not the PC, since having a Civilization game on the go is always a great thing to have for me.

Who else finds themselves enjoying this particular Civilization game?

By the way, my New Nintendo 3DS XL came in the mail today and I did a system transfer from my old Nintendo 2DS. I might get some games for it and for this system I want to buy them digitally since I like just having access to all of the games on the console itself. Kind of wish I did that for the Switch since all I needed is a microSD card. What games do you recommend?

I have my eyes on Super Mario 3D World, Donkey Kong Country Returns, Dong Kong Country, the Kirty wooley game, Minecraft (because I have to own this on every fucking platform >.<), and Bravely Default but that one scares me as it's $40. I always sucked at games where the combat was turn based.

Anyway, yeah, now about that Civilization...

lol yeah. I haven't played it in years, but it wasn't absolutely terrible. If I find an image of it online, I can probably try it out and report back, but that xplay video just about covers it. I do remember hating the art style, however.

I am thinking of getting a Nintendo 2/3DS.

I recently discovered that I could get one of these consoles refurbished directly from Nintendo on their official eBay store.

For $119, I figured maybe now might be a decent time to upgrade to the New Nintendo 3DS XL since my Nintendo 2DS might be on its last legs. It does have some mileage on it.

But I can also get the New Nintendo 2DS XL for $99 from the same place. Now I always had an affinity toward that design because it's smaller and easy to carry with you to places. But a part of me feels like if now is my opportunity to get a console that seems very well beloved even over that of it's smaller siblings. Why not spend the extra money?

I'm perfectly okay with getting a New Nintendo 2DS XL especially since I found out that Minecraft isn't exactly exclusive to the New Nintendo 3DS XL which indicates to me that there are no exclusives between members of the DS family.

But I want to hear your input. Which is worth getting if you were to get one of these handhelds in 2019?

Also, how large is the New Nintendo 3DS XL? Can it fit inside of a travel mini backpack? It's not too big that it is awkward to hold like how the Nintendo Switch can be, is it?

What do you all think?

I'm 31 yo and I've always been interested in game design and messed around with it over the years.
But in the last year I've been seriously teaching my self how to use unreal engine and a few other things (mainly unreal...i sort of tunnel visioned in on it).
But lately I haven't coded or worked on any of my projects.
It's really hard to stay motivated.

I was considering taking some community collage non degree courses in game design but its gonna cost me thousands of dollars for a fucking 36 week program that dosent even give me a degree.

I live abroad in a country that dosen't really have a game jam scene (Also i don't speak the native language so...

Basically I just want to get exposed to more stuff than being self taught gets you and be more well rounded and be forced to work on things in a lower risk environment than a job.
But holly fuck im not gonna almost go homeless and into debt over school.

I do udemy courses and stuff but it's not the same as being in a classroom with peers and a teacher.

Has any one here ever participated in some in person game jams? I think im gonna try going to some when I get back state side.

I've looked into doing them online but I usually massively outclassed in skill and I think I'd gain much more from an in person interaction.

I also have a first batch switch and have never had issues. I don't play it that much but it always works perfectly fine when I do.

I think it's just a luck of the draw thing, a good amount have the issue but a good amount do not. I don't know about newer models. No one should buy the light though it's a stupid product. Defeats the idea of the "switch" that you can switch between TV and handheld. It's just a re-release with that feature taken away and I don't know if any have been added. Buy the original it's not much more and being able to "switch" really is awesome.

>I don't play it that much but it always works perfectly fine when I do.

That's the thing, the issue arises with extended use because the connectors or whatever get covered with the "dust" that comes from the sticks due to wear from friction.
It's probably going to be a while before the old stock runs out and you're guaranteed to get a fixed one. I wouldn't bother waiting if I really wanted a Switch, but that's just me, I already fuck up controllers in about a year average due to spilled beer/drinks.

PT and Death Stranding: Why it’s probably actually a thing

File: 1562770752241.jpg -(328212B / 320.52KB, 1200x500) Thumbnail displayed, click image for full size. PT and Death Stranding: Why it’s probably actually a thing
I know there’s a ton of wacky conspiracies surrounding Death Stranding having some huge elaborate tie in with Metal Gear and Silent Hill amid the whole PT getting deleted from the PS4 store thing but for real, hear me out on this one:

Recently Kojima shared a series of images from DS of Sam sitting down with a button prompt to “Sleep”. Knowing Kojima and his team’s style he tends to like to squeeze in some interactivity at odd moments here and there, and I think this is where PT will become a thing within DS. Looking back on MGS3, you have an entire portion of another game, Guy Savage, that’s totally playable during Snake’s dream sequence upon being locked up, and he even references it outside the dream as well. That game was canceled/unfinished, so that’s all that remains of it. However! This isn’t saying that PT is a Silent Hill game...in fact far from it. People have made the point that PT was literally just a “playable teaser” for another game with a Silent Hills title card tacked on at the end. I think this is increasingly possible given the fact that Kojima put “Moby Dick Studio” on there and obviously one of the first things you notice in the reveal trailer for DS is all the beached whales. It’s easy to draw parallels between the radio in PT talking about alternate dimensions and beings and what’s been seen in DS, especially since basically nothing about the PT involved contact with aliens or anything really sci-fi, with the exception of Lisa and the talking paper bag. But what’s most important is the line about not believing what the media tells you (in regards to this whole thing not being legitimate or possible).

Ultimately I just want to see this story-within-a-story kind of thing in games more, but especially with this scenario. There’s already a first person mode, Kojima seems to still retweet stuff by Junji Ito, and as stated, he did this before, albeit with a way lesser known game/playable teaser. I sincerely don’t think Kojima is stupid enough to call it a playable teaser and then not follo it up with a mind bending way of implementing it in what it was actually teasing. 204863 and all that jazz will probably make a lot more sense in due time. Oh yeah, and babies and missing eyes and all that.

I just got done playing MGS, then MGS2, and now I'm playing MGS3 again for the 100th time. And it hit me today as I was laying down in my bed.

Kojima is a prophet sent to us by the Lord. Hideo's presence on this earth is a gift that we should cherish and hold dearly. Anytime I'm feeling down, I just think of Hideo Kojima and how he's working tirelessly to create a game that will change the way we even perceive this world. I swear that he's an angel. MGS franchise has gotten me through everything; it's my childhood, my longtime friend, and my shoulder to lean on when I'm hurting bad. The characters crafted by Kojima are alive and brilliantly acted by the most talented actors known to mankind. David Hayter is my father and I am his unworthy child.

When I played the Ladder part in Snake Eater for the first time, it opened my eyes to how video games can be ART. And that's what keeps my going in life. Death Stranding is the reason to live. I believe in Hideo Kojima. I believe!

204863

People shouldn't take this number as if it's something important. It might have been something significant in Silent Hills, but it got cancelled.
First of all, that's Kojima's birthday, if you remove the zero: 24 August -63

Secondly, in P.T. it DID have a meaning, although only in Japanese....
Basically it's a Japanese anagram for "look in the bath tub". And indeed, there was a certain point in the game where looking at the bath tub triggered a small event (and it wasn't something that could easily happen by accident). More explanation here: https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/827527-pt/69865464

Thirdly, the number appears in TPP on a wall of a building as "63_824". The same numbers, except zero is missing. Zero is missing, as in Major Zero who is hiding. Why is the order different? Because it's more clearly Kojima's birthday.

In other words, it was just a thing Kojima fiddled with for a while. In any of the material released about Death Stranding, not a slightest hint of those numbers has been made. Sure, Kojima might put them in some random spot in Death Stranding just to fuck with us. And then fan boys will discuss their meaning for years after release, never accepting that they were just a small reference to P.T.

Is there any horror game that deserves being called "a classic"? Basically every horror game I've ever seen isn't any subtle at all -- they all have either graphic violence or lots of jumpscares and/or spooky monsters, which are just really try-hard and uninspired ways of trying to spook someone, it doesn't really haunt you and make you lose sleep (unless you're a small child). Amnesia is kind of one of the subtler ones, but still, it has a literal spooky monster with a disfigured spooky face chasing you.
I'm looking for something like that fictional petscop game (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6e6RK8o1fcs) that's really, really subtle and really haunting. Do you know of a game like this?

I think there is definitely something to the idea (not Trump's idea thousands have been saying this for years). However like always it is stupid to generalize and obviously were not all becoming mass murderers. Unfortunately the way law works is it has to govern by the lowest denominator, if some people can't handle something unfortunately no one can have it because it puts us all at danger when the idiots get ahold of things.

Humans shouldn't have made it this far anyway, there's no good solutions to the world's problems because it's filled with humans and we are stupid selfish and confrontational by nature.

The first game is amazing. That level toward the end where you had to sneak through a level as two factions were at war was awesome.

The biggest problem with the games is that the control scheme is fucking baffling. I got the first game to play on my Vita awhile back since it was on sale for under a buck and it was a total pain in the ass to play. I would imagine playing it on PCeX or whatever that PSX emulator is called is much better when you can remap the controls.

Welp; it's only a month away and I can already smell the sour notes of change in the air. Personally I don't understand the hype, private servers have been a thing for generations and they come at the low cost of nothing; but I guess if a huge wave of players flood the gates, it'll be cool to see the massive turnout.

Know a lot of people who are going to jump in once it's open; some going as far as to plot out their entire leveling/gearing on day-by-day schedule; getting ahead of the curve and running Strat/Scholo several times a day in order to beef themselves up for the inevitable dickwaving contest that is world pvp. Gotta rip off that wrapper and shove the whole candy-bar down your throat as fast as possible after-all.

Plan to take it slow, main a warrior or druid, tank some dungeons and relive the olden days at a slow pace; maybe do some PvP when I hit cap.

Where do ya'll stand on Classic; Like it? Hate it? Want to call out an entire generation of neck-beards for being nostalgic losers who can't enjoy new games?

Got any stories you'd like to share with the class?

It's nice to be able to reexperience something that isn't available anymore, like the older versions of MMOs, so I can see the appeal.
I've been playing a private server for a 10 year old version of a different mmo, because while the game is still around and still being updated, the current official version is basically a whole new game and a lot of the things I used to do have been powercrept to the point that 80% of the game's content is largely worthless and just an ignorable (or mandatory) stepping stone to the new stuff. I like this old version because it's familiar and I understand what's going on in it.

In all seriousness though, Sim City 3000 is great. I had the original back in the day, but this is way better.
