Am I the only person who loves playing old games?

Am I the only person trying to find some new shit no one else knows in them?

So I was playing FFIX today and recently I got some of the useless key items from the auction house because muh collection. Well I noticed something I'm sure people already knew but you can press select for help from the moogle even on key items and the description for Griffin's Heat said it raises morale.

I thought that was strange, then I noticed in the next section EVERY fight with a griffin I got a peridot. This is really useful because it makes Ramuh's spells more powerful.

Turns out whenever you have one you will always get a peridot drop from the griffins. I looked a bit but didn't find this listed anywhere. Is it new!? PLEASE TELL ME IT'S NEW!!1

Also means other items from the auction or just random ones could have the same effect, kewlbies

In Mechwarrior 4, there was a physics glitch that allowed you to jumpjet 1500m in the air. This let you see pretty much the whole map. As long as your opponent wasn't hiding behind tall cover like a skyscraper, you could probably hit them. And nobody is looking that high in the air, because it's not supposed to be possible to get there. Add in some radar jamming and some light gauss cannons, and you can hit people further than they can target lock you. So I'd get into a black knight, have 3 ERPPC and 2 light gauss. I'd be able to cripple enemies with 1 shot at 1300m. Two shots was a kill. At 800m nothing could survive an alpha strike. The trick? If any object has a slope, it can be used to boost jump jets. This was well known. Everyone knew you could ramp off of hills. But I'm the one who discovered you could use a building's awning to catapult completely vertically into the air. Also some especially steep hills could have this effect IF you were a practised jump jet user. That was trickier, because mechs automatically brake if they go up a steep hill.

I have heard tech savy ppl say that crt monitors can look amazing and even look better than high end oled displays. Is this true? It's been a very long while since I've last seen a crt monitor. Also, gaming mouse and keyboards, gaming chairs, rgb pc cases and all that jazz, what do you think about those?

I saw a 1080p CRT back in the 90's. It was glorious. It didn't have the visible lines that CRTs usually have, and it had more photorealistic accuracy than most modern LEDs because it didn't highlight neon colors as much.

Gaming mice and keyboards are mostly bunk. The only useful feature I've seen in a gaming mouse is a button that slows the DPI so you can play FPS at high sensitivity but still snipe at long range accurately. I've been using a 10 dollar keyboard and a regular 2 button, scroll wheel optical usb mouse for over 20 years, and my CS:S K/D ratio hasn't suffered at all for it. But I can see how a better mouse/keyboard might do well for you if you play MMOs a lot. I find there's just not enough buttons with a regular mouse and keyboard to use your skills efficiently.

Gaming chairs are usually bunk. Some of them are pretty good, but if you're going to spend that fucking much of a chair, you should probably just buy a lazy boy.

RGB cases and peripherals are cool, I guess. I'm not into the aesthetic myself, but if you want to turn your computers into the Fast and the Furious, go ahead.

I’m a super diehard longtime Oddworld fan. When I was still in middle school I was part of the Alf’s Rehab and Tea mail club. I have all the games and play the first two every other month pretty much every year. And I’ve gotta say, I am super disappointed in how Soulstorm is looking.

Already kinda accepted things wouldn’t be the same after playing N&T and really hating the whole lack of frame-by-frame level design which would have probably looked way better if done cleverly with a new look. But everything shown in Soulstorm being just as bloomed out, even more cluttered, and now laden with some kind of looting system pretty much squashes any and all hope for this game restoring any credibility to the franchise. It doesn’t help that Lorne Lanning seems to regret anything after Abe’s Oddysee, essentially calling Exoddus and the two games after it rushed mistakes. Those were some pretty fucking solid mistakes, if you ask me (maybe with the exception of Stranger’s Wrath which I wasn’t too particularly fond of, but I applaud them for the risk taking). Seems like they’ve kind of left their whole ultra rusted industrial hell factory vibe behind in favor of ultra polished and bloom riddled environments a la New n Tasty, which is a real step back; gonna miss those horribly monolithic dystopian hellscape vibes.

Lol no dude I'm 29, I mean I played the original Abe's Oddyssey when I was around 8. Just looked it up and it came out in 1997 (I was 6) so that's probably about right since it was a used copy that came bundled with my used PS1 along with Tomb Raider, Rayman and Crash Bandicoot 2.

I never played Abe's Oddysee and Exodus though I have New n' Tasty and it's good though it feels weird going backward from a 3D to 2D puzzle platformer. The cinematics and story really make the Oddworld universe what it is.

I do hope we get Squeek's Oddysee someday. Funny thing is that Munch's Oddysee was one of the first Xbox games I got for Xmas the month after Xbox launched and it certainly had replay value with me trying to get Angelic Quarma, which I eventually did.

There hasn't been a major 3rd party baseball game since 2K Sports' deal ended after MLB 2K13 but I imagine MLB forced Sony to do this but at least it means Xbox and Nintendo are finally getting a good baseball series. It does seem unprecedented of having a first party studio to make their game available on other consoles especially a sports game, which have mostly been third party games with the exception of MLB these past several years.

also Javier Baez is on cover of the last PlayStation exclusive game

This. I got NHL 19 free with Games for Gold and it's not bad but I can't justify paying full price to what amounts to a roster update with stuff taken out/put back in.

Yeah there's RBI Baseball, which was rebooted by MLB Advanced Media and had replaced the MLB 2K series as a third party series but it's not very good compared to The Show. I do wish they'd make another arcade baseball game like Slugfest, The Bigs or even another Mario Super Sluggers game.

A year or so ago I know I was having a hell of a time finding MAME ROMs because of all that Nintendo faggotry going after random site admins which closed down a lot of my options. But now... Even the alt-sites I was getting DC ROMs on a few months back have either disappeared or stopped offering public ROM dls.. Used to be able to get anything off Emuparadise but those days seem long gone.

Just looking for PC ver of GTA and London 69. Anyone know a ROM site that still carries them?

Thanks for that. This site looks REALLY similar to the first website I made, which was in the late 90's, and just hosted maybe 5-6 (good) SNES ROMs.

I would play them in the computer lab at the community college I was going to at the time.

I would also open up QBASIC, program a quick snowfield in less than 10 minutes, and then leave it running and walk out the door. I thought that was so cool, that I could remember how to write a snowfield off the top of my head that quickly. It wasn't.

In a nostalgia thread on /b/ we'd kicked around the idea of running a 420chan MUD. If you've never played a MUD, it's a text-based multiplayer RPG, basically the grandfather of the MMORPG.

In this MUD, each player will not only be able to explore worlds created by others, but also take control of their own little pocket universe.

The details have yet to be decided, but it's likely to be very strange, fun, and overall very fucking interesting, like most of the stuff we do.

Sound enticing? The MUD is already compiled and running, and we have a programmer and a nice domain to point to it once it gets started. Join the Discord and have a say in how 420chan's next great experiment goes down:

It should be a fully 2D, or maybe 2.5D, side scroller
In my opinion the bonus stages were the best parts of the original trilogy and let's me honest the format of regular levels in those games is antiquated as fuck, so an entire crash game in 2D would be awesome
Something along the lines of DK Tropical Freeze or Yooka Layle Impossible Lair

I know I'm really late to the party (it came out 5 years ago!) but here I am and I want to discuss it. Good:
>The story missions and the writing were some of the best I've ever seen in a game or anything else.
>Trevor is such a unique and badass protagonist. That voice acting, damn. I actually did chill seshes just to see what he'd say.
>Brilliant person switching mechanic directed you to missions and prevented you from having to run back to a save point on foot after exploring and crashing your vehicle.
> High mission variety, the branching heist missions were good, but not the government jobs.
>Amazing cinematic music during important missions.
>All the minor convenience tweaks like letting you skip missions after dying 3 times and being able to replay missions for a high score. Also superpowers.
Bad:
>Even though it looked beautiful, I never felt the urge to explore like I did BotW because the few things you did discover weren't worth it.
>Mediocre radio soundtrack, not enough talk radio.
>Franklin can smoke weed, Michael can drink, but Trevor can't smoke meth? I call racism.
>Almost everything that isn't part of the main story is extremely tedious and unrewarding. To contrast, I played Yakuza's minigames long after I beat the main story.

I mean literally EVERYONE is a predator in the US if you look at how paranoid these people are.

You can just take a piss somewhere and you can be labelled a sex-offender.

Wasn't there a story at some point where a brother helped his little sister to go to the bathroom (both kids I mind you!) and he was handcuffed and kidnapped by the police?

Uh, so, anyone want to discuss the actual game?
Hopes/fears for changes? Let's leave aside the "deus vult" thing, because that dead horse has already been beaten in this thread and many other places.

Full genetic system seems like it could be really fun and interesting.

I'm conflicted on "spending points on a perk tree" for your dynasty. I've always wanted some kind of traits for your dynasty, but I would MUCH prefer them to develop organically out of consistent decisions you make, or even things out of your hands: consistently been attacked or struck down by disease, etc.
Spending "perk points" feels really gamey to me, though I think many players will like this more than what my preference would be.

I do like the idea of a stress mechanic for your character, penalizing behavior which goes against their personality, but again for me part of the joy is stepping into shoes of someone who has a bit of history, and making often "non-optimal" decisions based on what I think they'd actually do.
Again, I know a lot of players don't do that, instead they try to always make the optimal decisions and try to build up their character to have highest stats, best traits, etc. So I think the personal lifestyle tree will be good for a lot of players.
I think I would be satisfied with the personal lifestyle tree if when I quantum-leaped into an older character, the tree was already filled out a bit based on decisions they have made.
It will feel gamey and dumb if all of a sudden I embody this character and now they start making lifestyle choices.

It sounds like schemes and plots and so on are getting some improvement, which is a good thing. It felt like there was a lot of wasted potential in that area in CK2.

Anything else?

>Spending "perk points" feels really gamey to me, though I think many players will like this more than what my preference would be.
Who exactly?
The system that exists currently has trees of decisions and semi-random events that give perks.

The sort of player who min-maxes is going to use those options based on outcomes rather than what's in character for their guy, and have just as much control as they have now.
The sort of player who actually read the events and chose based on what seems in character just loses some flavor about their character.

Though due to the limited number of events and number of times a player goes through new characters before they've memorized the common ones, maybe this is just streamlining the end state of clicking through menus without reading anything but the effects.

Oh shit I fucked up my composition and a decimal point.
>the time it takes the eye to reach its new orientation is 6.6ms
66ms. Still relevant to all the other shit I was saying but not to the frame time of 144hz, which was really just an aside anyway. This would have been obvious if I'd had my coffee before the post instead of after. Or if I'd had the coffee before the bowl.
60 degrees range of motion is roughly how much you'd have to look from one corner of a 27" monitor at a 2 ft distance to the other. Long story short it takes you like 3-6 frames to look from your crosshair to your health and back.
Technically, if you could move your mouse as fast as the eye can, you shouldn't see any motion blur either.
But A: you can't
And B: motion blur algorithms are based on frame-by-frame vector calculations so you'd actually see MORE motion blur in that case on the given frames.

So yes, motion blur is very flawed when it comes to that aspect of computer graphics. I think you could just apply a transform curve to the magnitude of the vector to chill it out as it reaches effectively instantaneous speeds but that's not accurate to how film works and that's the basis games and 3D animation apps use.

I turn off motion blur, depth of field, and chromatic aberration.
They just fuck up the image, when I'm playing a game I want to look at crips, sharp images and textures. These things literally just smudge the game world. I don't want everything to look washed out when I'm turning, and I don't want to see half the game world in front of me in an artifical looking blur.
I just turn textures, models, etc. on the highest quality and turn 90% of post processing effects off, because they are taxing as hell and only make the game look less sharp.

I surrender! I surrender! Hah-hah-hah-hah-hah!

I just bought it. Honestly not disappointed. Ever since the release of Duke3d 20th Anniversary World Tour and Shadow Warrior Redux, I've been dying for a similar release of Blood. It has been many years since I played original Blood on DOS and whatever differences there are, I fail to notice. It only feels different to me because of the framerate. You're right about the hitboxes on the corners though, but I don't really mind it.
