What does /vg/ think? What game had the best soundtrack? Music or ambient/orchestral is fine. I vote the first Skate game.

Go fuck yourself chiggy, this doesn't belong in /m/ as this is specifically about vidya games.

I tried to think of games where I liked the whole sound track and not just a few songs and Dracula X was the first to come to mind. It's like they used all the best Castlevania songs for this game. So many games with good music in this thread though.

I don't know, man. I love The Doors and Frank Sinatra as much as the next guy, but I don't want them in my THPS. This soundtrack felt more "gimmicky" (for lack of a better word) than any of the others. Like, I fucking love Violent Femmes. They're one of my favorite bands of all time. But I don't think Add it Up really fits the "WOO EXTREME COMBO FUN TIME" vibe that this game especially carries.

But I'll admit the good stuff that actually does fit is good, and there's not a small amount of it. Dead Boys, The Germs, Nebula, etc. Even the Ween song that was chosen fits well. But there's a lot of stuff here that just makes this soundtrack kind of all over the place, I think.

In Pursuit Of Greed probably would have been more of a success if the fucking geniuses who marketed it hadn't made the demo version lo-res only.

As it is, it is only remembered for the soundtrack by Andrew "Necros" Sega from the early demoscene, who used early versions of some stuff he would later remix for Crusader and Unreal Tournament.

Nemesis The Warlock
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lxYY7UdQRZw

Rob Hubbard was one of the few composers to really get the most out of the SID chip the Commodore 64 used for sound.
And the game, based on the nightmarish Space Gothic 2000AD comic, was a platformer with the original mechanic of forcing you to pile up the corpses of your enemies until you could climb up them to the top of the screen and escape.

There are so many remixes and covers of this theme.

For you underagebanned who want to put this into perspective, keep in mind the 64 in C64 was for 64 K. Not 64 bits, the whole computer had SIXTY FOUR KILOBYTES OF MEMORY TOTAL. And that was it. Programmers back then had to be economical, there wasn't such a thing as "bloated code", lol.

Not a fan of the game's ambient soundtrack, to be honest. Sounds like every family car commercial made in the last few years. Happy-sad BS with whistling and xylophones. Not for moi.

I agree with you about the overall sound design - there's a huge variety of quality themed soundtracks and effects for your rides, plus the ability to import your own, as you mentioned. But especially how guests' audible reactions (fear, excitement, laughter, etc.) are synced perfectly to the motions of your ride, scenery, etc. So much so that you can practically use it as another performance metric.

Great game in general, I know this isn't the thread for it but it really scratches my RCT1/2 nostalgia itch in a way that #3 never did.

I really enjoyed the Mafia 1 and 2 soundtracks. I even listen to them in the car while I'm driving and it relaxes me greatly. I don't know how Mafia 3's soundtrack sounds like but I'm willing to bet that it's garbage just like the game itself. This is what happens when you take away a classic game from the original creators from the Czech Republic and give it to the U.S .

Mafia 3's soundtrack is mostly just 60s classic rock so it's a fine soundtrack with some good but obvious choices.

The only issue is that they play the soundtrack in almost every cutscene imaginable like someone is out of frame with a radio. I didn't play it for that long but the scene where the betrayal happens is one of the biggest issues with this.

>The betrayal happens: Paint it Black plays
>Lincoln recovers: Bad Moon Rising plays
>Transition cutscene into gameplay: Desperation plays

So it's 3 songs used in less than 10 minutes. From what little I played of the game, it never shut up and just let the decent voice acting play itself out; it always had to put a song in the back to try and feed emotions into the scene and felt like they were trying to cram it into everything because they paid a shit ton of money for the soundtrack.

The port kind of sucked. IDK about the main game cause I only played like 20 minutes before giving up and replaying MGS3, which was a better port.
In retrospect, the MGS1: Twin Snakes port was probably worse but I lack the patience I had back then.
Side note: It's also possible that the console's 'never online' firmware version was a contributing factor to the game running poorly. The last firmware update I got was the one that shipped on the Catherine disk.

You're misinterpreting. Konami didn't spend $60 million on Peace Walker. They did on MGS4. Peace Walker was a handheld initially. Main line means main product line, not story line.
In the same way that Digital Devil Saga is not main line for SMT, Ac!d or Peace Walker and the like is not main line for MGS. IRRC Metal Gear Online wasn't main line until they integrated the 3rd release with the MGS5 product.

No, you said "off brand". It doesn't even matter because you're still wrong. Peacewalker was literally called MGS5 throughout development, the name change was a last minute decision. It's still very much a "on brand", "main product line" game, or whatever other stupid buzzword you want to use, and the subtitle, or how much it cost, or the system it was released on is totally irrelevant. That's like saying every Zelda game since The Adventure of Link isn't a "main product line" Zelda game because it didn't sequentially follow Zelda 2. Also Ac!d is a completely different genre, which is generally how you classify something as a "spin off", so your comparison makes zero sense. It doesn't matter that they were both on PSP. You'll also be completely lost going into V if you skip it. I didn't get into when I first tried it either, but once you understand how the Motherbase upgrade system works, it's an amazing game despite having terrible boss battles.

THUG had a better soundtrack but THPS4 is the better game, I think. It's also the hardest of all of the original Pro Skater games and deserves to be played for that fact alone. THPS4 is the game that forced people to git gud at THPS, if they wanted to actually complete it. THUG is just too easy, even on its hard mode. Plus the pro goals are some of the best missions ever in any Tony Hawk game, the secret characters are way better than THUG's, and you can't tell me that Alcatraz and the Zoo are bad levels. God tier THPS game.

>Except OlliOlli and OlliOlli 2 are easily better than the entire original THPS series.

That's taking it a bit far, I think. As someone that was ranked 1st on the leaderboards on 45 of 50 levels in the first OlliOlli not that you guys will believe me but hey, what can ya do I definitely think they're amazing games. But they don't really offer any more or any less than what THPS already has, if you're into score chasing, which is the real longevity of OlliOlli. It may require a bit more precision than THPS, but honestly not by as much as you might think if you're into high level THPS play. And once you learn to maximize your score as best you can in OlliOlli there's actually a lower skill ceiling, since you'll be relying on far less tricks and, in turn, inputs than you would be for THPS.

But they really are both amazing series (for the most part, I'll be the first to admit that Tony Hawk has a lot of stinkers) and OlliOlli shouldn't be missed, especially if you got really into the THPS games at any point.

Every trick in olliolli is dictated by the control input.

Your ability to execute any given trick in THPS is a matter of memorizing which input it's on and how long it takes.

It's a better game. It's like comparing Skyrim to Dark Souls.

>Your ability to execute any given trick in THPS is a matter of memorizing which input it's on and how long it takes.
Literally the exact same thing as OlliOlli. Only in OlliOlli, you don't have to memorize as much, because once you realize bigspins, bigflips, and spins are literally the only air tricks worth doing at all in terms of score chasing, that's all you need to memorize. Then it's just a matter of knowing how many spins you can get away with in the air and landing every trick and grind perfectly. webm related, one of my WR runs. Note that any air trick that isn't a bigspin or bigflip is literally an accident.

The perfect landing/grind mechanic is the only thing separating this from THPS mechanics at all. Just because you go about executing the tricks on the analog stick and not on face buttons doesn't mean that they don't work on the exact same principles. One clearly offers a bit more depth and learning curve, but once the skill ceiling is hit, these series are not far removed at all. Much like THPS, it's just a matter of how familiar you are with it. Once you put in enough time and git gud at OlliOlli, it's going to feel a lot less fresh and a lot easier to see how close these two series really are to each other.

As for which series is "better", that's purely subjective. But to claim that they're as mechanically disparate as Skyrim and Dark Souls is simply incorrect.

No, you missed teh point.
Inputs vary in length and intricacy in a very intuitive way that reflects most of the tricks.

Tricks in THPS are assigned to what amount to hotkeys.

Honestly the combo systems are only slightly different. In THPS you just categorize your tricks based on how quickly you can land them and just rotate through at semi-random to minimize diminishing returns on your combo multiplier.

>But to claim that they're as mechanically disparate as Skyrim and Dark Souls is simply incorrect.
Confine your scope to the input and swap out Skyrim for morrowind.
Also pretend that Morrowind gave you actual control of your moveset, or that it mattered strategically, which it absolutely did not. OlliOlli is still dark souls in this analogy but it has the Morrowind issue where one attack is blatantly better than all others.

But even the way THPS goes about giving reasons for diversity were clunky and unfortunate. It's just a penalty for repitition.

If you wanted to analogize them on a superficial level, it's King of Fighters and Tekken straight up.

>Inputs vary in length and intricacy in a very intuitive way that reflects most of the tricks.

Yeah, I get that, but I think in the end, once you've gained the muscle memory to perform everything as consistently as you can, then it ends up being a fairly superficial aspect. It carries you through an interesting and gratifying learning curve but beyond that it doesn't do a whole lot. You may have the inputs that offer intricacy but that intricacy doesn't exactly translate to a game with 2D pixel art and very pre-determined physics. Once you've learned to control it well, you may as well be pushing buttons to accomplish the same actions (as in hotkeys, like you mentioned THPS employs), and I don't believe much at all would truly be lost in how the game fares mechanically.

I remember getting penalized for landing badly in thps so it's not that unique. the word "sloppy" gets added to the combo chain and ends up lowering your score. I don't think it applied to grinds though. you could be as sloppy as you want as long as you didn't fall off during the grind.

Yeah, THPS did have perfect/sloppy landing mechanics as the series went on, but in OlliOlli the penalty is a lot more drastic and it works in a completely different way. In THPS it's about landing straight and OlliOlli is about timing a button press. Not exactly original (I mean, Thrasher: Skate and Destroy had more or less the same thing), but I'd say it warrants a mention when it comes to mechanical differences between the two.

I enjoyed the mixture of semi-industrial ambience w/ technological-ish tones to it, it fit the game itself incredibly well I think. I wouldn't go out of my way to listen to it but as background music, it works incredibly well. Super underrated as fuck too, both game and OST.

420chan's thread pruning algorithm deletes threads on the last page. Other imageboards prune chronologically.

There's threads from a week ago that have expired. There's threads a year old on the front page.

Shinobi 3, Shin Megami Tensei 3, DKC2, Metroid Prime, and Thunder Force IV are my picks. Thunder Force IV was as metal as you could possibly be with 16 bits. Shinobi 3 was damn fine as well on the same console. The others I appreciate more for their subtle but strong ambient music though they can get fast paced just as well. SMT3 had excellent and fitting battle music and each normal battle theme had variations so it didn't get repetitive, most notably the primary normal battle theme. Metroid Prime boss themes were generally really intense and anxiety inducing or bombastic and epic, it was awesome. dkc2 even had that cool industrial-esque final boss theme.

I just found out that one of the guys who did music for the jet set radio games did the sonic rush soundtrack and it's very similar. helps that the game is actually good too. oddly there's different versions of each song depending on which character you play or if it's the cd version.
