PS4 update 4.0 beta by Magus - Wed, 17 Aug 2016 19:54:51 EST ID:1sI0HwDW No.680194 Ignore Report Quick Reply

So update 4.0 is coming to the PS4 soon and I was just accepted to take part in the beta. It's currently downloading.

Some of the notable features include:
Folders so you can organize your home screen (like the PS3's folders)
the ability to hide apps like Media Player, Share Play, etc. from home screen
The ability to stream 720p 60fps from YouTube, Twitch, and DailyMotion (although I was already streaming 1080p 60fps on YouTube before the update, but hey whatever I won't knock the ability to do it with 720p)
Privacy settings can now be applied on a game by game basis
Enhanced and customizable quick menu
The ability to look at trophies for a game directly from the quick menu
Friend Request Acceptance notifications
Adding cover photos to your community profile
Uploading screenshots directly to the community page

Contrary to popular rumor, there's no mention of being able to change your PSN ID name, and there's no mention of PS1 and PS2 backwards compatibility. If you guys wanna know more just ask.

Example of new quick menu. I like the overlay here better than the old quick menu that took up the entire screen.

New folders feature. I could have swore the read up of the main features mentioned something about deleting things like shareplay and whatnot from the home screen but I couldn't find the option to do it, so I just lumped all that shit into a junk folder.

There's no option to sort the content in your folders alphabetically, by date purchased, last played, etc. You just have to sort them on your own. But adding content to folders is exactly as simple as you'd expect.

And lastly here's a cover photo example. Kinda cool. Overall not as big of an update as I was hoping for though, and even the new features could use some work. Hopefully stuff like alphabetizing folders will be addressed by final release, and I'd love to be able to remove stuff from my home screen that I currently can't, but I'm not expecting the final version to be much different from this. I suspect the final release will be more or less identical, just with the bugs ironed out if any exist.

Seems like a fairly minor update, but as long as it runs well, I dig it. I do like the ability to hide apps and folders for a cleaner look.

I'm personally sick of updates that introduce a new UI, some silly, unnecessary features, but bog down the system. If it's less responsive than before, you're doing it wrong. Fucking looking at you, 360 update that got rid of the blades UI many moons ago. I'm still angry.

Just give me something that's as fast as I can input things and I'm happy. Don't give me 3D interfaces and whistles that look good on paper.

You're not the only one. The "new Xbox experience" was worse in just about every way, in my opinion. Plus all those adverts. Fuck it to hell. Plus the blades just looked better, I think. It gave that UI a stronger personality.

On another note, another feature I forgot to mention is the ability to control music played from the quick menu. This is something that was already available with Spotify, but not from the Media Player. Glad this was added.

Even if the Scorpio is more powerful if you don't have any exclusives it won't generate any interest. It ain't about hardware, people who care about hardware already moved to the PC. It could be a piece of shit console like the switch but people will still buy if it has decent exclusives. Microsoft need to get their together.

^^^^^^^^^^^^ this x1000. This first few months of 2017 has been some of the best in terms of great games, especially PS4/PC exclusives.

An Xbox is basically a closed source windows PC, especially with them allowing some "games with live" to be played on PC, what actually motivates people to purchase a microsoft console other than fanboyism?

I got an Xbox original in 2001 and loved the fuck out of Halo and etcetera, but they're a far cry from what they used to be. Pretty sure I haven't even booted my xbox one up in 6+ months.

They're gonna have to really step their hardware gaem up and lower the price down to a place where it may start to be justifiable to waste money on a new semi functional PC.

oh

I must have missed that.

Microsoft has the exclusive of Fallout 4 and Skyrim mods that don't suck cock. And I say that as someone who only owns a PS4.

Sony has No Man's Sky, which keeps ME on PS4 when nothing else does, but as I understand it, that's not exactly a commonly held sentiment. Microsoft also has E, although apparently PS4 is getting it soon. Apparently.

Obviously, but seeing as the price of a gaming PC isn't comparable to the price of an XBox or PS4, that's really a moot point.

Nier is open-world, Yakuza is more like two large hub areas that the majority of the game takes place in. I guess it can be considered open-world, idk, but Nioh definitely isn't.

Horizon is good. Open-world - pretty big, and decently challenging. Looks beautiful too. It hasn't completely grabbed me the way Breath of the Wild did, though... I'm not really gelling with Aloy as a character. Gameplay is fun though - targeting the weak points of robosaurs with certain damage types to blow up a cannister of flammable goop or whatever is pretty rad.

In terms of upgrading to the Pro from a standard PS4, nah, probably not. I don't wanna be that guy, but as someone that owns a PS4 and plays the shit out of it, when you look at the fairly minor improvement you get to framerate and resolution, the money would honestly be better spent on going toward a PC build.

But hey if you don't already own a PS4, and you have a 4K TV, I'm sure the PS4 Pro is a great place to jump in. The PS4 in general, standard or Pro, is a great console with great exclusives and tons of great opportunities for importing. If you're on the fence about it and want to hold out for true 4K console gaming though, the Scorpio will be here soon. But you won't have as many exclusives with that. You've got a pretty hefty amount of options, really, and honestly when you take them all into account, I think the Pro should be placed pretty low on the priority list, unless you just have the money to blow and don't give a shit.

For the most part it's just a name change with an added button. Options button functions as Start, cllicking the touchpad in usually acts as Select, and share button does what share button does. It's just their actual design that kinda sucks. The buttons are really close to the touchpad and too flush with the face of the controller. I miss the unmistakable, rubbery Start and Select of old Playstation controllers.

I've had problems with stick drift on PC, but I think that has more to do with conflicting drivers than a problem with the controller itself, because it was working beautifully at one point and it still works great on console. Just too lazy to uninstall/reinstall drivers tbh.

What sucks about it is that the controller actually felt really good for a mad catz. The buttons weren't mushy or anything, triggers felt fine, and the D-pad felt good. yeah the xbone has a good controller, the elite controller has an analog stick that glides like butter but it's not a good enough or long lasting enough controller to be worth the price. even if you don't have the console the regular model is worth owning for pc games that need xinput. I never thought the ps controllers felt too cheap, but I always thought the shape was a bit off with the first three dualshocks. the ds four feels a lot better in the hands. they altered the shape to be more ergonomic like what you expect from microsoft and nintendo controllers and it's much better for it.

I didn't know it was a common issue. My left thumbstick was unresponsive at the worst of times so I said fuck this and twisted and it shattered on the right handle and cut my palm. Taught me to be less destructive but my wife loved those stupid controllers because they were "cute" so we kept getting them.

I just want to be able to remove stuff from my library of purchases. I'm so sick of seeing a bunch of betas and things I'll never play in there. Call me when that happens.

Yeah it does that without any additives. It was an update forever ago no need to preform necromancy to announce it.

Yakuza 0, Nioh but it comes out on PC soon so technically not exclusive anymore. Persona 5 and Horizon I haven't played but have heard good things about.

The Order 1886 is badass, totally worth it if you find it cheap. There's also Blue Reflection and pretty much anything else honestly. The graphics are almost guaranteed to be awesome in anything you don't find good for something else.

Avoid Uncharted though, I never played one until 4 and holy shit it has the dumbest fucking story. Not to mention he has this giant rope hook and jumps fifty feet at times but dies from ten foot drops and can only climb in places with set markers. The graphics are intense as fuck though

No prob. Games masquerading as "interactive movies" annoy me.

Its a decent series, at the least im confident of the first three. Jumping right into the last one like that is a bad idea. You wont really know much of whats going on with Nathan Drake and all the characters around him. The first one is brutal though, not your average interactive movie. See if you can survive it

I'm thinking of grabbing a PS4 too. So Nioh, Uncharted, Yakuza, Horizon... what else? Do they have a good selection of retro titles? I have a PC so mainly looking for exclusives.

I will never not recommend Bloodborne to anyone asking about ps4 games. Beyond that there's some other exclusives that personally I didn't find to be anything special but you might like (Infamous: Second Son, Killzone, etc) that are also probably dirt cheap now.
Also there's some ps2 titles that have been "ported" to the console.

Wasn't there a trick to get free PSN by signing up to the free one month trials? It is laborious but you got free PSN one month at a time...

Depends. If you already own a PS4 then you'll have to ask yourself if the improvements are worth it. A lot of main titles received 4k treatment but sometimes at the cost of FPS. Meanwhile the real bread and butter is 1080p being super-sample with a no FPS cost, giving games a much more crisp look to the point where people can't even tell the difference between 4k/1080p.

Which brings up another argument, HDR. While many will say its just a buzzword those who have experienced it will say that HDR is more of an improvement than 4k. Sadly unless you're willingly to shell out ~700 - 1k for a GOOD HDR TV that is a function left unexplored for another couple of years. HDR monitors are set to release sometime as well.

If you don't own a PS4.. then sure, why not. There are some nice exclusives and the PS4 itself functions nice as multimedia platform.

I just got one, the 4K shit sucks for most games because you sacrifice playable framerate but for 100 Bucks more I don't regret picking this up over the slim. Some games are all around nicer looking and play smoother. It's really not a big difference. But $400 compared to $300 also isn't much of a difference.

So if you're buying a PS4 for the first time, go for it. If you already have one I wouldn't recommend "upgrading"
