Brutal Doom v20c is in developement!
Did some Beta-testing yesterday and I am seriously blown away!

Whats the last wad you played?

Whats the last wad you build?
Care to upload?

My favorite wad of the week must be Doom 2 Reloaded, man!
http://www.moddb.com/games/doom-ii/addons/doom-ii-reloaded

And I don't know if its because I'm still drunk
but I enjoyed this

There was already a doom thread somewhere, did it stopped bumping?
Anyway, here are some pretty good wads that came out semi-recently:
  • Ancient Aliens
  • Sunlust
  • Blade of Agony
  • Going Down
  • dead.wire
  • dead.air

Or I could just link to the latest cacowards http://www.doomworld.com/23years/

I'm not a huge fan of gameplay mods to be honest. Usually it's just the work of a lone coder who doesn't know shit about level design, who doesn't care about writing or artistic style. I don't really see the point of playing something that doesn't have an actual campaign (or an artistic vision for that matter).
Now wads that are made specifically for a gameplay mods can be great (at least there's something to play on), but they tend to be pretty short.

Most of the wads listed above won't work with a gameplay mod btw.

not sure if trolling or not
but I will answer your question;

  1. Doom has a very impressive engine that can run on a printer-display
  2. making it run with mods is super-easy (just drag and drop)
  3. there are countless very impressive mods!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OllmcyEx4jo
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M6CRP5ibdRI
4. you can play it coop with your friends
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9k7QnDtiGWA
5. fast-paced gameplay that still wipes the floor with every Halo and CoD
6. modern editors allow to build even more details into maps that weren't possible back in the day

I'm looking for a wad I used to play that was really fun. It was a completely grey ghost city full of barely visible enemies and the aim of the game was survival within tight corridors, and the players were scored on how long they could survive, and you had to coordinate and work together and go one at a time sometimes to clear the way and progress for other players. Anyone know of it? I found it on ZDaemon and it might still be there but I don't remember the name.

I've been playing Freedoom with a GZdoom frontend, and it's horrible.
It looks like Ken's Labyrinth after someone's cum in your eyes, sounds like Megadeth played on a PC's internal speaker, and the menus look like they're written in lipstick. The monsters all sound like you've spilt their coffee and make annoyed grunts at you. The Freedoomguy looks like a gay Doomguy in moon boots, and the human enemies are very drunken Borg dancing hardcore.
One level is literally a single room with a sign saying THERE IS NO LEVEL HERE. The level design manages to plagiarise specific Doom levels, while making them worse.
Basically it's Doom without the good art or music.

It was. The enemies were just transparent grey shapes and if they touched you, you died, and you had to keep moving all the time or they would corner you and surround you, and there were so many of them that if you weren't accurate they would quickly swarm you. I usually never got far, but it was fun to watch other players to see how far they'd get. I can't find the wad anywhere and I've been looking really hard.

Apparently what happened, according to Romero, is that he went in to work on the game one day and found the easter egg of his head hidden behind the wall. It was just put there for fun by another developer. So to fuck with the dev that put it there he recorded his own voice work and tied it to the easter egg as a surprise.

Of course, this is, like, my second hand version of the story, but apparently it went something like that.

a Doom-noob thanks you for your awesome contribution!
(Doom 2 Reloaded was fucking great!)

I had to wade through a shit-ton of god-awful wads from "Caco-Warts" and "One-Man-Doom" (obviously Rex Claussens cocksucking bitch) and I deleted 99% of them after the first 3-5 minutes!

I'm starting to realize why Sgt Mark gets so much butthurt hate:
Most haters could never create anything close to Hell on Earth,
just look at all the mediocre of plain ugly shit like "flood-mines" or "phoenix rising" !

I remember people gushing all over the place for plain boring maps like "heroes tales" , "Dead Stupid" or "Ancient Aliens", maps just stuffed and cramped with tons of demons, with no sort of enemy-placement or even intelligent triggers!

Is there any other source for good maps/campaigns?

I like the ambient music but i feel it changed too much of DooM without being its own thing. Some of the weapons are clearly OP as well.
When it comes to replay the Original Doom id prefer using Complex doom. It adds new weapons which i feel none are OP and the extra demons add a lot of variety to the gameplay.

>is there a brutal version of it?
Every. Single. Time. I'll never understand you guys. Can't you enjoy something without the brutal label on it? Don't get your hopes up. This is a full blown TC, there is not a single piece of the old doom in here. There is absolutely NO CHANCE any mod is going to be compatible with it.

Here is what the authors has to say about brutal doom compatibility:
>Yes, when the sun rises in the west and sets in the east, when the seas go dry and mountains blow in the wind like leaves. When Daenerys Targaryen's womb quickens again, and she bears a living child. Then we will return and add Brutal Doom compatiblity, my sun-and-stars, and not before.
At least they doesn't seem to be completely against it. But it's clearly not a priority.

Also I've been waiting for this one https://forum.zdoom.org/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=56668&start=15#p1003247 it should be good, the first one was silly as hell but fun. And before you ask, no, there is no brutal version of it.

I don't care what the author says,
he is clearly another one of these triggered brutal-doom-haters.

Brutal isn't the label
its an essential effect that lets you splatter enemies brains onto walls.

You know why this is requested "every single time"?
Because it enhances gameplay 100x!

Thats the reason gibbing was essential in Quake and HL, because it gives you a feel of fast impact.

I seriously could care less about the BD-label and all the artificial drama,
but everyone who tries to restrict his mod by incompatibilites, should just stop modding forever.

I'm not trying to be mean or trying to tell you how you should play your games, I really couldn't care less. But asking for brutal doom compatibility in every single mod means you have a deep and severe misunderstanding of how games and moddings works.

For something to work with brutal doom it has to be made with brutal doom in mind, it's that simple. The author doesn't have to do that because he has a vision and he doesn't want to compromise that vision by forcing himself to use some random gameplay mod that happens to be popular. Show some respect to the modder, try to understand why he did it, try to play it the way it was intended first and you might like it even better.

He is not going out of his way to restrict compatibility on his mod. It just happen to be incompatible because that's how things work, period. Any mods that has new ennemies/weapons/mechanics will probably be brutal doom incompatible, so stop asking. This is not a choice on the developper part, it just happen to be this way. There's nothing anyone can do about it.

If you want a brutal version so badly you can do it yourself. Everything from BOA is available for free on github. That's the beauty of doom modding, you can pickup any WAD and change anything inside, nothing is encrypted, even monsters and weapons are scripted in readable files rather than compiled.

The drama is from people who keep asking the same thing over and over, despite all logic and reasoning. It gets tiring on the developpers, especially when people like you are telling them they should stop making games simply because they didn't made the game for the right mod.

PS: here's a super cool map for brutal doom BTW https://steemit.com/gaming/@thecastle/doom2-redemption-of-the-slain-beta-2-0-release-and-download-feb-8-2016

I don't want to argue with you
but CVARS exist for a reason.

No modder is forced to make his mod compatible, because very single wad - if done right - is already compatible with BD.

And as you said: Thats the beauty about Doom:
You can mod it into nearly everything.
And the only way the modding is happening is through sharing and combining the shit out of mods.

Hmm, well the only other suggestion i can give is opening it up in SLADE and copying the map data into a new project. You'd have to remove all references to the unique guns, textures, and monsters though. It's be a lot of work to scrub it clean...

This should help:

http://slade.mancubus.net/index.php?page=wiki&wikipage=Tutorials

Youtube should be a good resource for tutorials too. I'd start by looking at how a level is built from start to finish, then open up a copy of the vanilla "doom2.wad" (to save time and effort) and copy over the map elements that you want. You'll still have to tweak spawn points for weaps/mods/items/etc. as some of them won't be in the playable area.

It'll be a lot of work (a LOT of work), but afterwards you'll be able to pull maps out of just about any total conversion mod which is a very handy set of skills.

I've got two monotizeation claims on my Hotline Miami 2 LP due to the music in the game, even though I have both permission from the developers to do an LP on Twitch/youtube and expressed permission from the artists themselves who's music is claimed, yet their shitty record company doesn't want to play ball and would rather I dispute the claim in order to get slapped with two out of three copyright strikes after they deny my claims automatically via bots.

What if the energy crisis we see in Rage is the result of DOOM Guy destroying the Argent Energy cells? If you recall what Hayden said to DOOM guy before he destroyed the last argent energy cell: "If you destroy that argent cell, it will cease to exist in this dimension, and everything will be worse for humanity" Or something along those lines.

just drag the wads (or pk3s) you want to use onto the GzDoom.exe.

Mostly HD-textures and additional lighting effects and music-wad.)

I can't believe people equate visible pixelation with ugliness. Doom still looks fine to this day. I prefer it to today's sterile shooters, and the multiplayer is still better than any other multiplayer shooter I've played. Hell, there are Doom wads that are better than full "triple A" games sold at full retail price.

BTW does the latest Doom have anything like the modding community of the original? Does it have a modding community at all? I ask because the game looks pretty good, as did the original Doom single player, it's just that I never play Doom for the single player campaign. I mean has the FPS genre really evolved much when a twenty five year old FPS is more fun? I'm looking at you 500 million dollar Destiny. How much did it cost to make all those wads? I'm not saying there's no innovation in modern shooters, there have been plenty, but newer does not equal better.

Getting new friends doesn't mean ditching the old ones. He should diversify his friend portfolio though. Or get some of the more easily persuaded ones alone and win them over one by one. Or both.

>>716424
There have been some great shooters that have done a lot of cool things with the genre. But Doom is still one of the best.

I think the early Unreal games are probably better but because they're 3D I think it raised the bar for modding exponentially and so denied it the longevity that Doom got. DOOM was a modernised take on the original and again snapmap blows and uses the (shit) multiplayer engine with 2 guns and is far too restrictive generally. So it won't have that modability. The 2.5D sprite format of the original is what keeps it alive. Even though brutalising it or whatever added mouse aim.

Lots of other FPS did cool things but few to non had the gameplay as simple but perfect. People lambast bioshock, its gameplay was pretty mediocre but the world and story and stuff were great. Deus Ex was a fucking clunky RPG. Ugly too. Wonderful. Painkiller was early 00s trenchcoat fodder turned to like 666 out of 10 and it was great fun as a result. Shadow warrior was knob and/or dad jokes and slicing shit up with a katana. Halo had the then revolutionary regenerating health/shields and also fucking couch co op. Many step brother bonding moments had there. You shoot the elites but don't stop moving for a second, while the tank is missing you with its cannon I'll shove a rocket up its exhaust and then we'll have the elites flanked and can punch them to death now their shields are down.

FPS evolved in a lot of ways, but that evolution made the modding scene Doom enjoys impossible. I think the genre has lost its way a little bit but there's always new ideas and even if they're often used as gimmicks or strapped to a mediocre chassis they are still good clever ideas that do new things.

The Doom online community is so varied that you can find modes that differ vastly from the original game. There are wads that play like survival horror, there are puzzles, it never gets old because they're still innovating. I may be a bit out of the loop, but the most recent FPS I really enjoyed playing through was the first Crysis. It was sort of refreshing because it allowed you to play the game at your own pace and how you wanted without favouring one style over the other, and the environments were really, really nice. As for multiplayer shooters, I've played COD online, and wow. It is just monotonous and boring. It's a matter of reflexes. The only time I've ever had any amount of fun with COD was one-on-one split screen. Timesplitters Future Perfect is my favourite FPS, and really one of the last of the really old school FPS games. Really the Timesplitters games were among the most fun FPS, just smooth and a blast to play.

As for modern shooters that look good, Battlefield 1 looks fun, maybe the last two Crysis games, but although the Doom reboot looks good, The name "Doom" only makes me want to play Doom. As in Doom.

Project Brutality+Maps of chaos(Overkill) honestly provide the best way to re-experience the maps of Doom2 and the game.

I've gone through Both Brutal Doom starter pack and the maps of chaos so im all ready for Ion Maiden.
Personally i didn't like Dusk. beside the gameplay, which it copied from better games, Dusk really has nothing to offer. Its riding off the nostaliga. While thats not necessarily bad, i wish it tired a bit harder and establish itself as its own proper game.

That sounds like it would be EPIC! But instead we have NO FUN ALLOWED losers who want to LIMIT brutal doom compatibility with "play it our way or don't play our fucking wad at all"!!!

I've met ravenous hostility when talking about this topic on the official BoA-FOrums and ZDoom.
Its like a club of old people waving around their crutch at Bingo_night, thinking Vanilla is the best flavor ever.

If all you care about is the spectacle of the over-the-top gore then this mod will help you out:

http://www.moddb.com/mods/brutal-doom/addons/ketchup-v5-gore-mod

I do agree it's stupid to lock out BD compatability though, it just adds so many good enhancements to the gameplay. Like, it makes the minigun actually meaty instead of the fucking peashooter that's in vanilla. Also it makes the shotguns sound like they actually blow chunks out of enemies instead of just coughing lightly on them. And don't even get me started on the assault rifle replacement for the pistol, that thing has saved my bacon so many times in the challenging megawads that OBLIGE spits out for me...

Look, modders don't go out of their way to make things incompatible with brutal doom. They just make the mod they want to make and it happens to be incompatible because that's how the friggin thing works.
Do you realize how entitled you sound? Do you even understand how much time it would take to brutalize Blades of Agony? Modders don't owe you anything. Be glad you're still getting new content to this day. You want to brutalize it, go do it yourself. nb

nobody said anything about brutal doom.

It has only been stated that the suggested mod has custom monsters hard-coded into it despite creating a interchangeable mappack would've been the far superiour solution (because of the theoretically countless mod-combinations!).

Go untwist your panties.

Guess what guise; I've only gone and discovered an OBLIGE preset that spits out maps, episodes, and full games that spits out interesting levels that are both fair and challenging. I've been playing through one for Ultimate Doom with Project Brutality and Ultimate DoomVisor and I've been having a blast. My version of this secret sauce has ZDoom Railgun Marines added; I think it's fun to always be kept on your toes not knowing when you'll run into these nasty OHKO monsters.

Paste everything below the line into a text editor and save it somewhere convenient, and then download and run the latest version of OBLIGE (7.70). Click "Menu" > "Config Manager" > "Load". Navigate to where you saved the .txt, select it and then click "Open". You then have to click on "Use" in order to apply the current settings. After that you can safely click "Close". At this point you can set a seed if you like by clicking "Menu" > "Set Seed", typing a 16 digit number and clicking "OK". Once you've done all this, just click "Build" save the .wad somewhere easy to get to and sit back while OBLIGE creates some sweet Doomy goodness for you. Load it like you would any other map-pack when it's finished.

Rip and tear my dudes

I made a few using the same settings, or as close to the same settings that the earlier versions would allow for. I used versions 3.57, 6.20, and 7.70 because apparently they are the three major milestones in OBLIGE's development history. The letters at the start are the version of doom you should load with it; UD = Ultimate Doom, D2 = Doom 2, TNT = TNT: Evilution, PLU = The Plutonia Experiment

You ever be Evading bullets, fireballs, rockets, and plasma and think to yourself that the game feels like you're playing a generic bullet hell game with gore?
I kinda wish there was a mod that turns the game super realistic while still maintaining fun gameplay, not just a masochistic wet dream.

I'm playing Maps of chaos overkill and the downtown map pits you against a hundred demons as soon as you spawn, and includes a Cyberdemon. He's such a huge target that he quickly switches to infighting mode and it feels like he's your buddy. Its kind of dumb but the choas is so out there that i legit find doom scary again in a maddening sort of way.

I OBLIGE'd some endurance challenge maps. Be aware that you may need a beefy rig to run these. I only made it about a third of the way through on my craptop before the framerate dipped to 15-20fps. Take them slow or you'll quickly be overwhelmed. Quicksave often as well.

Started playing Doom VFR with the PS4 Aim controller, I had tried it with the moves but it was just a struggle, and I only just figured out to change the controls so the left stick is move and the right stick is turn. Now it actually plays like a FPS, three stages in.

Just finished the third level and it's pretty good. Completely new enemies, environments and weapons, and it's not just stuff taken from realm667, everything was hand crafted for this mod.

Some devs are too enthusiastic to give instructions on how to play and I struggled for a bit, just run the game with "gzdoom -iwad doom.wad -file REKKR.wad -deh REKKR.deh" with a .bat or smth.

It's nice to see they seem to be sticking with what worked in Doom 2016. The gameplay looks pretty much identical, which in this case is a compliment.

My only complaint is that grappling hook. I like the idea of it, and I like the verticality it seems to allow, but it feels too "video gamey" in its physics interactions with zombies. Not that Doom is a realistic franchise, but it just feels too cartoony and weird how he can pull himself forward by grappling frail/emaciated-looking zombies with it (in his presumably heavy power armor), and he goes flying forward but they stay planted, if that makes any sense.

I was kinda hoping they would work on the glory kill, when i heard him say they were working on making doom a non stop action filled FPS i thought they took out the glory kills or somehow turned them into something that didnt make you stop and watch an animation for two seconds but its still there. I didnt hate them, but they're almost unusable in harder difficulties. I am kinda happy that demons still drop stuff when you "overkill" them, like ehen he mincing the soldier he dropped more armor shards the more he fucked up his body.
Also, i dont know if anyone noticed but Doom Slayer gets hurt at the near end of the video and you can hear him grunt from it. This is exactly what i wanted. I might not have a face to give me an indication to how much health i have left and emotionally connect me to what is going on in the game but at least il finally have a voice to connect with.

I get you. Just Cause 2 had cool grappling hook gameplay. I'm not sure how you'd let people figure out which enemies come to you and which you come to without trial and error or adding clutter to the interface or an arbitrary rule though. I suppose adding the weight to the monster profile and explaining that the hook will pull you towards monsters over this weight would work.

>>724595
Archvile could be a boss fight, though it'd need to be a bit more threatening than the older incarnations. Increase its health, make it raise dead enemy repeatedly and it'd be a pretty good boss fight.

Still to this day the most terrifying thing in gaming history is when you walk into a room in a Doom game and hear that Cyberdemon activation noise. You have no idea where he is and you hear that *ka-thunk* *ka-thunk* *ka-thunk *KA-THUNK* *KA-THUNK* getting louder and fucking louder sending your anxiety though the roof.

I can get over the fact that there are living humans, even though i personally think the only human in a doom game should be the Doom Slayer since he's the only one strong enough to survive hell. I really do think you're over reaching. The berserk was just an item in the original game that made your physical attacks stronger incase you run out of bullets, and there is nothing funny about the BFG9000. You can argue that the ending of the first doom was a joke, and it kinda was. But i honestly just think thats pretty typical of all fps shooters from back in the day. Duke, Blood, and Shaolin Warrior all had slapstick nineties jokes in em. Doom in comparison make it seem like it jokes were never part of the formula.

Also im pretty sure John Romeros head wasn't supposed to be there. They didnt all agree to put it there for shits and giggles, i heard one of the developers was genuinely mad at Romero and wanted to convey his feelings in some way. Kinda like Simcity's helicopter gay thing.

In any case, Doom 2016 didnt have any comedy in it, and adding it at this point just seems odd. Lets just wait and see how it plays out.

In order to call it an insensitive joke, you first have to equate immigrants with demons. The game has not done this. I'll say again, THE GAME HAS NOT DONE THIS. The only people to have made that comparison so far are the ones complaining about it being a bad joke. Sounds to me like they have internalised-racism and need to check their privilege

Easter eggs are fine and its not trying to be funny, just nodding to a good movie. Borderlands2 Tier comedy is what im afraid will ruin Doom Eternal. What if the Doom Slayer decides to install Vega onto his suit, but this time he's got a "quirky" personality like Claptrap and he wont stop making jokes about the "Mortally Challenged"?
I dont think we're going to get that, but I feel like we're going to get something similar to that.

It's a good thing that as proven in this thread you don't know shit then.

Doom has never taken itself seriously. It's never been full on slapstick but who the fuck plays what is basically a macho power fantasy and takes it entirely seriously? Even the developers just went "Lets turn this shit up to 666" and just went with it. I loved all the Doom games but they are goofy escapism. I mean when you're 10 and you're playing the original and it's dark and you can just hear the monsters around you it's scary but that's because you're 10. I laughed a fair amount at doom. Evilface mcroboboss is your straight man.

Nothing was proven besides the game has Easter eggs which every game has at least one, even horror games. Doesn't make them comedic

Some people do take Doom seriously. The thing is, it lets you do either. Maybe you wana be that rage filled killing machine that is the Doom Slayer. The game does reward you for playing aggressively and ripping through hordes of demons as fast as you can. if you do wana look at it as a "goofy" over the top escapism, then thats really on you. Whatever impression you got of the game, you still had the option. But if you push some weakass joke right into campaign, people like me who like to play the game on Ultra violence and want to rip and tear the demons take this game fucking seriously, will cringe and roll their eyes at every joke. Doom 2016 didnt have any of that. Doom Eternal might, i say might cause i aint alone in thinking that joke was insensitive and out of touch. Who knows, i doubt it but maybe Id won't be "goofy" and actually deliver us a good game free of their jokes.

No, i did say it was insensitive. I'm just hoping the campaign wont have a lot of jokes like that. I dont think that Borderlands2 tier kinda of comedy belongs in a doom Universe. But its not like its going to ruin the entire game for me. Its still going to be the same Doom 2016 gameplay except with more shit you can do. I do think its going to feel a bit more arcady. That double jump, the quick shift (Twice) to any direction in mid air, and that scorpion thing that he shoots out of his shotgun dont feel very realistic. But hey its still beats running circles around the demons. Thats all you did in Doom 2016 in ultra violent to avoid the fireballs and it gets old pretty fast.

Also i think they changed the sound of the supershotgun and the reload time but also increased the damage output. The sound and the damage output of the super shotgun always felt too weak to me so im all for this.

>>724718
Doom 3 is more of a horror game. If i wanted a fast paced ultraviolent killer immersion, i would play Brutal Doom but even that gets old pretty fast. There is always Project Brutality to spice up the gameplay but even then, its still the same old doom we've been playing since the 90s. I tried playing Painkiller but its just not the same. Painkiller feels too much like an arcade game for me to get into it.

It's not Doom. You're not going 90mph gunning down any demon thats gets in your way. They specifically slowed down the movement so you wouldn't play it like that. switch to walking, Pay close attention to your surroundings and drink in the atmosphere. Hedon has a lot of little details im sure you'll get to enjoy if you just took it easy in your approach.

Don't get me wrong, I'm liking the game so far. I just think the puzzle to open the magic ward in the second map is complete bullshit. How am I supposed to know that you have to brew a potion, then put that potion on a table in a completely unrelated place? It was pure luck I managed to complete it. I saved the game right next to the table and mixed up my keys after reloading the game the next day.

I'm ok with Doom TCs that aren't like Doom. I respect the author vision and what he/she tried to convey to me. I just think that puzzle was fucking retarded. I'm scared I'll run into more retarded shit like that in the next maps. There's nothing that kill your fun more than running around for hours trying to find the 1 small detail to use.
That wouldn't have passed quality assurance or playtest in any serious game, not by a long shot.

You're mixing up level design with environment art. Level design has almost nothing to do with how good a level looks. I agree it looks fantastic, but the level design is everything but great. It's very flat and boring.
I am very disappointed as well, I thought it would be some sort of campaign but I guess I was mistaken. You go into a small room, fight a bunch of monsters, search the map for the last enemy, wait for the next wave, then repeat again and again.
It's very repetitive. There is no exploration, no story, and the overall gameplay is very bare as there are no encounter design. I could go on.

Although I must say it's pretty cool if you play with some gameplay mod like BD or D4T, just to blow off some steam. Don't expect anything else. The author is actually listening to feedback so there's that.

I looked up the definitions and you're technically right, but I'd say a good "level designer" does some/all of the above. At least when I think of making a level I'm envisioning every aspect of what the player will experience. As somebody who has always loved making maps/levels I would hate to outsource my ideas to tons of workers and have to compromise on my vision. I guess I'm not meant to work for an AAA company. Maybe that's why so many maps/levels in AAA games suck ass...

Just a heads up. I had to search for it but the new brutal doom is mostly playable as well as the new Extermination Day maps/vehicles/weapons. You'll want to download the brutal doom beta from moddb uploaded in August. If you want the maps search for Extermination Day: Eye of the Storm.

Extermination day has tons of map improvements since I played the demo a while back. The new brutal doom feels a lot different. The weapons share ammo which I HATE because it makes half my weapons pointless and I have to constantly swap through all of them because using them in an emergency would deprive me of ammo I need for better weapons. I hate to do it but I might just bind a key to drop weapons. It also helps a lot more to use specific weapons besides the shotgun and rifle now and the game feels a lot less arcadey because of it. You'll be switching weapons quite a bit. Some of you might not like it but the weapons themselves are by far my favorite out of any version. The new gore and everything is quite noticeable at times too. I love it

Overall it's just much different than the previous version but I hope it's not the last version. Definitely an improvement overall.

It's my only real complaint but it sucks balls. It's still kinda interesting in terms of strategy though. Ammo is now a much bigger factor in choosing your weapon. It becomes a question of how many bullets do you NEED to spray per second in order to survive, so it's not like you just stop using the weaker weapons altogether. Even the weaker guns still have situational advantages even if it's not often. At the end of the day it's just a minor annoyance that takes away from the immersion.

I think the last version went perfect with the original Doom wads. This new version has a script that makes old wads look fancier and it's absolutely amazing, but the gameplay doesn't fit quite as well. This version seems to be designed for Extermination Day.

I also tried Ashes and wasn't too impressed but I'll try it again later

Nathan Hale - Sun, 21 Oct 2018 21:12:12 EST 7c6nS55A No.728275 Reply
nb but when I say they share ammo I mean certain guns share ammo with certain guns, not all guns use the same ammo. When you've got 3 machine guns and 3 shotguns and 5 ways of using grenades it gets annoying. I don't remember this being a thing but maybe it's just noticeable since there's more weapons now

I'm not really worried about the design aspects of making WAD's. That's just a matter of planning out the designs of your walls, floors and ceilings inside a testmap in advance (both textures and shapes).

More worried about the scripting, how to make weapons, how to balance encounters, etc.

I only tried the first level. It was lame but I still want to play the episode. I felt really weak and kept running out of ammo and the level itself was just underwhelming compared to the trailer. There doesn't seem to be any sneaking mechanic or much to do besides shoot guns so you feel really powerless being forced to take tons of damage and run out of ammo. Some alternative ways of dealing with enemies and more places to explore would have been a huge plus. Maybe some more ammo with less health to balance it.

This feels like it would be designed for survival mode but I'm afraid to try it because I don't know what all it removes. I tried the first level in both modes and didn't notice much difference.

If you think you can start mapping and crank a great map right now then go for it, more power to you. Just saying it's going to take a lot of time to make something worthwhile and it's not exactly a summer project.
Level design have nothing to do with visuals or texture usage. The closest you mentioned is balance encounter, but that also include layout (backtrack, looping, linear or not), pacing, item/monster balance, playtest, composition, etc. Not to say environment art doesn't take dedication either, in fact it might be even worse.
If you script new enemies or weapons be prepared for brutal tards calling your wad forced vanilla bullshit.

I like the story, going through the ruined city and finding the spire are great. I like the guns, but there needs to be more weapons, though I like that you can get some guns upgraded. Its very short though, bout half as long as the first chapter in Doom 1. Beyond the frustrating driving level, it was really good.

I tried it again on survival and beat the first 2 levels. I still can't decide if I should start over on normal. I wouldn't say survival is hard but it's tense. I like it but at the same time all you can really do is hide behind corners and pop out to shoot. The normal game didn't seem all that different though.

The feeling of survival fits the game perfectly yet it also feels like you should just be running around shooting stuff. It messes with my brain

Thinking about starting with Brutal Doom/Project Brutality.

But I dunno. I've seen some videos and it looks like BD/PB are very much "modern corridor shooter" shite, just with health packs and assault rifles with explosive bullets.

It looks very strafe unfriendly if you know what I mean. Opinions, experiences?

I tried BD back in the middle of 2015 (don't remember what version, my data file is "brutalv20.pk3" for Zandronum) and it was fun but played very differently from the original. One of the things it certainly is not is hard. Maybe with Plutonia or TNT it might work but still being able to get both HP and armour past 200 permanently and having more powerful weapons makes it real easy for me.
Although I used to play DOOM and contemporaries on keyboard only and whenever I play any of them with KB+mouse difficulty is at least halved every time so who knows.

I don't think "brutal" was supposed to mean "hardcore". It just depends on the WAD. The difficulty is about the same as vanilla IMO. The Extermination Day: Eye of the Storm wad designed for BD is significantly harder than most of Doom 2 (The end of Doom 2 gets pretty crazy IIRC). Difficulty settings exist for a reason though.

>>729170
My suggestion is don't mix WADS that aren't really designed to be mixed. Play BD then play PB. They're 2 completely different things. BD really needs Extermination Day: Eye of the Storm to really shine. It works decently with vanilla WADS too though

I also would recommend waiting for the new version of BD. I know I praised the beta a bit but the more I play it the more issues I run into and I expect a lot of them to be an easy fix. Maybe just check it out to see how badass it is.

How does one survive a slaughter map without cheesing the living fuck out if it?
I'm i just supposed to go in circles cause that shit gets old really fast. All i do is, enter a room, demon infighting, exit room, walk in once things get quiet and murder the rest. Maybe that just the way people do them.

Sheik - Fri, 30 Nov 2018 17:23:42 EST ZCdb9Jtz No.731071 Reply

You're meant to cheese. The odds are hugely stacked against you, so you're forced to select the most effective strategy. Call it cheese or exploit if you want, but there is no such thing in slaughterwads. It's more puzzle than combat and it's not for everyone. Even if you went in "properly" and killed everyone you wouldn't have enough ammo anyway.
Running around in circles can be tiresome after a while, older wads can get quite grindy (sunder) but more modern wads will try to avoid that kind of shit (sunlust or stardate 20x6). Not all wads are made equal.
Also play vanilla because these are obviously designed with vanilla in mind, it's not going to work otherwise.

The way Wads are handled all you should need is any complete version of Doom 1. The shareware wad doesn't have bfg, plazmagun and a handful of enemy types in it. There would be no reason a mod would need a "legit" copy of doom nor would there be any real way to check.

What's a good way to play a vanilla feeling DOOM but maybe with some interesting gore like PB. I also like when enemies drop to their knees and I can blow their heads off or hack them up with a machete.

PB is awesome but sometimes it feels a bit too much like I'm being rewarded to take cover as opposed to dodging enemy attacks and being up in their face.

PB goes too far and the weapons are overpowered. You can decimate most demons with the chaingun. Whenever i get the plasma rifle I just know the rest of the game is gonna be a cakewalk. ComplexDoom weapons are powerful but the different types of demons you run into always keeps you on your toes. Its actually pretty intense when you run into a new type you never killed before.

Also ComplexDoom has the best Supershotgun sound imo.

OG Doom's chaingun tore through zombies and Imps but was fairly useless for the bigger demons, I think that's what he means. It changes the balance of the weapons too much if the chaingun can just rip through Cacodemons and the like.

Cacos soak up a lot of bullets and it takes a while to take one down. They’re a Waste of bullets and and it will keep you busy long enough for other demons to tear you to shreds. The rocket launcher is perfect for it as long as you know how to aim. Check PB and the chain gun rips right through a caco in seconds that’s without the upgrade that makes it even more powerful. PB is a bit silly. If you wanna properly get some fun out of it, you better play it at a high difficulty.

That's a completely different issue, except when you consider the chainsaw against cacos, because it just so happens to work the same way.

In any case, Cacos aren't "big demons" like anything else with similar or even somewhat less health. You could even say it's often a waste of ammo not to get cacos to fight other monsters.

Vanilla Cacos is predictable, so it’s easy to get them to attack other and get a good demon mosh pit going. Most mods I played tend to give him a wider range of attacks, and they can side strife and do other random shit. I had to go through Evitternity on Vanilla and I just couldn’t believe just how slow things were moving and how predictable all demons are. I guess I’ve just playing doom mods for so long and I forgot what it felt like. Maybe someday I’ll feel the same about Skyrim.

I want a Caco plushie in my room.

>>732675
One thing that bothered me about it is the fact that the Unmaker no longer harvest the souls of zombies for ammunition. Now you just have to wait for it to fillable or some other non-metal way of doing it. Also the gernades are still op but it’s always fun to blow yourself to chunks whenever you fuck up. All in all I do like PB and it goes well with the map megawads with plenty of space but ComplexDoom will always be my favorite hidden gem in the modding community.

Technically, that's kind of doable, I wouldn't be surprise if you can find a Bill Clinton life sized plushie, and just cut off the head / everything but the head. But personally, I wouldn't find that at all the same. Seriously, who the fuck would think Clinton's head can replace Caco? SIGIL sucks. There are way better and more advanced fanmade-maps.
Even as an old map, its a shit map.

I was expecting so much more of the "godfather of Doom" !

Movement is restricted, unfair traps everywhere. Its like he picked the worst maps from Doom 2 and made them even worse.
>platforming in a DOOM-game

the maps are small, restricted, he uses only the Doom 1 bestiarium, so no more shooting chaingunners in the face with a SSG.

Maps are way too dark at some point (yeah, even when using other sourceports than GzDoom!) and everything loks so boring after the first map.

Ammo-shortage and ridiculous enemy-placement makes SIGIL a chore.

Friend of mine doesn't own a PC.
