Baldur's Gate 3 has been announced by Larian Studios, the studio who made Divinity Original Sin.

Dunno about y'all but i'm pumped for this. A plot to do with Illithid's is gonna be great.

Baldur's Gate 3 being made by Larian instead of Obsidian, inXile, or shudder Beamdog is such wonderful news. BG3 is in great hands.

On one hand I'm hype, Baldur's Gate is one of my all time nostalgic favorite series and Larian seem like a good pick - even if I'm not the biggest fan of the writing in DOS

On the other, there's a part of me that would've liked to see the righteous Bhaal-rage that would have been unleashed if they let NewBioware turn it into a third person action game

just a quick question, this feels like the perfect time to finally get into bg,
but I wonder if I should play bg1 as well? I hear so much praise for bg2, but 1 seems kind of a boring random encounter fest in comparison. Or is it not really that bad?

Well yeah, BG2 is a leap forward in comparison. BG1 is still worth it for the backstory alone.

I love Obsidian's work it's big epic fantasy and under rated. However Larian have already made a game that feels like a real tabletop game of D&D and as long as they don't take the wrong liberties (the right ones being things like making skill checks work like both DOS and Obsidian games from FNV to Tyranny do) with the system they might make the first game that feels like a real game of D&D. Miss the plot hooks, set everything on fire, break the carefully planned encounter by exploiting the scenario, then on the next fight fuck up "being clever" so far beyond anything the DM envisioned that the only rational option is you're about 3x out your depth. Then survive.

>>738299
I loved BG1 however the first couple of character levels are a drag. Once your wizards stop being deadweights and your clerics(take 2 stack buffs) can start summoning skeletons as well as buffing you it gets fun. The story is great, I loved the return to Candlekeep and then when you finally realise what's going on you'll shit bricks.

that fucking Chekov's gun

2 is a better balanced experience. Stack mages instead though. Throne of Bhaal is something else. Stack melee. I think I killed Demogorgon, the mightiest lord of hell in about 8 seconds I think. Whirlwind attack is silly when you have a girdle of giant strength and a holy avenger.

The problem us larian is too goofy unlike every one of those other studios, with the exception of beamdog being untrustworthy. I'd rather have inXile or Obsidian on the writing, art style, and graphic development of a game.

Also is it worth trying to power through BG1 and BG2? Because the real time with pause clusterfuck of combat is absolutely fucking horrible man and the writing so far seems pretty subpar and the sound design pretty mediocre, which I'm going to need the game to give me at least *something* to make up for the graphics being so dated and bad.

What you mean having everything in utter casual scrub tier modes of simple yes/no checks instead of % to fail because kids and newfags are too dumb to mentally process risk taking?
>like DnD
That isn't which is part of why I fucking Hate yes/no skill checks to see if you pass or fail. This is because the old tabletop games all had dice. Which is effectively a percentage chance to hit. Hence why so many games have a CtH. Because if you roll a d20 against 12 willpower save it means you effectively have a 40% CtH. How good the RNG is programmed for a computer to simulate real chance is a different story. This is why skill checks should work as a %pass instead, rolled against something like willpower or armor class/type whatever. It was one of numerous things about FNV that I absolutely fucking hated, which was the stupid idiotic skill system in addition to the subpar writing which really couldn't be better because of how things were scripted etc. Only so much text you can fit in that box.

At least a game like what inXile did with Wastlenad 2 preserved the Fallout system which is an attempt to preserve the tabletop chance based play, not this pass/fail bullshit for children.

Real time with pause is just turn based with 6 seconds per turn but with everyone on their own 6 second timer that's ticking as long as they have things to do. I never saw it as real time at all because I knew AD&D (2nd) well enough to see exactly how it mapped to tabletop.

If you're level 1 or 2 most of it is a slog. 2 is better out the gate as you have more options in combat (start around level 7). In BG1 you start really laughably weak with few options and basically have to cheese the first few fights. Once you have fighters who can't die from a crit, wizards who don't fling a single magic missile then become slingers and clerics who can buff the shit out of you people can actually fillroles.

Writing wise it's the same guys who wrote Obsidian. If you're in the tutorial bear in mind it's mostly written to teach you the controls and establish your (so far pretty lame) backstory.

I found Larian pretty goofy but all but the most serious grimdark campaign ends up with a victory parade appearing out a tree, or the horny dragon being distracted by a basilisk.

Playing BG1 is totally worth it, although you might want to use a guide to find sidequests and other stuff because there's a lot of zones to explore.

Leveling up is a big deal health wise, and most of your expierence points come from completing quests.

>random encounter fest
Baldurs Gate is kinda the opposite of that

Install both games, then install the mod that inserts BG1 into the much-improved BG2 engine and lets you play through the whole damn thing from the start. It's great.

The BG engine is improved? I too wish to know if it's even worth the fucking bother. I started as a squishy wizard and I think I'm only like level 2 and I'd already stopped playing and lost interest because of the shit combat and the game seeming to indicate to me there'd be a LOT of it, and fuck that. I hated that shit about PoE. Well, actually I disliked a great many things about PoE and the combat wasn't the worstBRING BACK DURANCE but you get my point. At least Planescape had cool mage combat. Which is why I played some wizard build come to think of it. Are the spells at least good? Because at this point I'm only playing to have a save file for BG2 and heard it's a lot better to do that than start with 2plus I already know the big reveal about you being demonspawn, or something

The mod combines some (mostly high-level, I think) spells and character creation options and mechanics from BG2 (and includes a huge amount of the most popular mods for both games in a convenient all-in-one downloader-installer), but if you don't like the combat at all, you probably won't find it to be a revolutionary change that 'fixes' the first game for you. And frankly, you might not like 2, either: the encounters are more varied and interesting, the story/characters are better and more interactive, but the basic gameplay loop is pretty much the same. If you still want to give it a shot and are sick of 1, though, I'd say just jump into it.
http://www.spellholdstudios.net/ie/bgt

I will say that magic combat in the series as a whole is exponentially better than in PST, but you have to get over the classic D&D low-level wizard hump to get to that point. Some of the later encounters are sublime IMO

Don't forget also that you can multi class, it helps alot as a low level wizard to take a level in fighter or cleric.

Eh I don't think I really want that mod after all but thanks. JUst sounds like it adds way too much shit I don't want or don't want to deal with.

I think that I'll just force myself to power through BG1 since I've actually already had multiple games that I dropped and then picked back up and was amazed by over the last many years and none of them has ever gotten the sort of high praise that BG has gotten. I think the big thing that spoiled it for me is the fact that I finished playing PoE, and I didn't like it or got frustrated about so much of it that I simply didn't bother even putting PoE II on my wishlist nor have I gotten the White March because I am just that done with that series and that disinterested that I'm not going to waste thirty fucking dollars on new expansions. This has thoroughly soured any of my inclinations to play Baldur's Gate or ever even try Icewind Dale.

Then I tried getting into it, and of course I picked a squishy wizard before I knew how bad it was going to be for how long, and it felt way too much like dealing with Arcanum, where I realized I didn't give a shit about the terrible gameplay at all and was solely there for the story. Considering this is the same thing with BG, I'm wary of how much time I want to sink into forcing myself through it because like I said, I have no interest at all in having to put up with the shitty combat and overall terrible gameplay and am only there for the story at this point.

All that being stated just because it's gotten so much praise I think I might stick with it, but I have a bad feeling about this. Like I tried forcing myself through Deus Ex GOTY because everyone said how good it was which taught me not to trust the opinions of others because that game fucking sucked. At no point from start to finish did I ever think that was remotely worth my time. I question whether I'll end up thinking the exact same thing about BG unless the story is really, really good, and like I said I already know he is somehow a demon so if knowing the plot twist ahead of time is super important then it degrades the value of the series even further for me

Wizards absolutely suck at levels 1-2 but by 5 they're gods with fireball and haste and all the good shit, though I'd take a specialist and not a generalist wizard. Take 2 wizards of different schools and have a gazillion spell slots. Then party hard. However you should have a party of 6. A couple of front liners, at least 1 cleric, probably a thief with detect traps and disarm traps pick locks and maybe some stealth and then you're good to go.

Seriously though clerics. Everyone has always been "Oh i have to wear a collar and be chaste and boring". No you fag, you worship the god of war, or partying or death or something. You embody the fury of nature or whatever. Ruin shit. Or raise skeletons and give the whole party +3 to hit and saving throws and +2AC and still have a spell slot for hold person.

What are your thoughts on save scumming to protect party members from dying, a particularly at the lower levels? Also how is the actual story to Baldurs Gate as compared to say Fallout 1, Pillars of Eternity, Tyranny, Tides of Numenera, Planescape Torment, Wasteland 2 and the Shadowrun games and so on?

The war clerics are some of the most overpowered shit in 3.5
You can take 2 levels in fighter with a war domain cleric and you have so fucking many free combat feats at level 3. Nothing else can compare. Plus they have the option of pumping charisma instead of wisdom for their secondary stat, and there's all your role-playing utility.
Furthermore, in the extended lore and Forgotten Realms you've got gods that give you exotic weapon proficiencies through their favored weapon.

Naturally, Pathfinder ruined all of this by formalizing it as the Crusader subclass, making it actually balanced.

The game says "save early save often". At later levels some of the fights will require a couple of attempts just so you can figure out the right strategy (or which buffs to open with or pre cast) to handle them but at earlier ones it's a bit swingy even if you get things right. They were very faithful to AD&D which has always been like that. There's a reason most CRPGs give you much more frontloaded health progression.

I mean it's objectively a dumb thing to waste your time complaining about but on the other hand it's a really stupid thing to do and I don't understand watching streamers who just play video games silently with like a webcam feed of them sitting on their bed silently surrounded by anime pillows while they play Bloodborne without so much as making a facial expression.

I personally feel that video game streamers as entertainers is a rather dull thing. Some can be cool but for the most part it all feels like they're saying "Watch me play games and laugh wile you feel like you're not a complete loner. But I want them views and ad money, buy my merch too". Thankfully not all youtube entertainers focus their channel entirely on gaming.

Some channels are decent with making comedic content or edutainment concerning tech history or by showing tidbits of footage to those who just want to see what a product is like before getting one themselves (See Fallout76 reviews) and I appreciate the nicely put together ones. However I'd rather put my dick in a frying pan than watch Pewdiepunk or Marxist pliers, RPG streamers and some of the other weird entertainment channels like it such as good mythical morning or that weird asian prison shank channel where they make knives out of random shit... I'm sure many do though and I don't really care.

Then again I'm also the type who'd rather read some subtitles than listen to the sounds or music of annoying humans, mute any commercial and look away from the screen when they're on, and give a thumb fucking of dislikes on any shit I find to be unpleasant.

Call me Faggotron I don't care, but try suckin on my D and I might squirt in yo face man. Back off deez nuts.
