What is a good shooter game? Anything is welcome but I'm especially looking for war-related, premodern times is a +

I'll suggest Devil Daggers. I'd describe it as a minimalistic Quake 1, with all the focus on more interesting and dynamic enemies rather than maps (it has none).

I'm a fan of NecroVision. It's kind of a spiritual successor to Painkiller set in WW1. If you haven't played Stalker in a long time, Call of Chernobyl and Dead Air are standalone mods that are worth playing.

Medal of Honor Allied Assault and Pacific Assault I remember being pretty good.

Sniper Elite V2 is a pretty rough-around-the-edges game but it's certainly fun.

Return to Castle Wolfenstein kicks ass, but adds ridiculous fantasy elements to the World War 2 setting so you might not be down with it. It's also unreasonably difficult and has a few shit forced stealth sections.

As for me, I want side-scrolling action platformers that are mostly melee-focused like Castlevania or Zelda 2. I'm writing the design document for a game such as this (albeit more linear) and want to see how other designers have done it. Preferably they'd also have ridiculous levels of violence - gibs, blood fountains, decapitations, all that good shit - since that's what I want in my game.

Allied assault is much better than Pacific Assault. The console version is Frontline and not actually the same game.

But you can pick Allied Assault or Frontline and there's your last really good Medal of Honor. Frontline is OG MoH. Allied Assault is more of the precursor to Call of Duty.

This, MP and SP both. 2 is a bit of a step down as consoles became the primary audience for the MP segment and SP relied too much on 'infinitely spawn enemies until you reach the objective' for almost every level. Most judge the series only on 4 and later because relative to that game's huge influence few people played 1 and UO.

Call of duty has always been a trash game. Goldeneye on the N64 was a better shooter both from a gameplay standpoint and from a technical standpoint. Perfect Dark expanded on the genre in a major way, and pushed the boundaries of what a shooter could do. Then we get Call of Duty, with it's repetitive missions, crappy controls, and lackluster multiplayer. It's a huge step back in every way, unless you like grey and brown level designs.

CoD 1/UO took place during world war 2 and they weren't any kind of technological advancement in any way since you also had Medal of Honor: Allied Assault which looked better, but it was your typical shooter of the time and it was pretty vibrant as much as you could make 1940s France/Denmark/Russia

not to mention the guy was looking for pre-modern war games which goldeneye and perfect dark isnt

Obviously I've thought about it since I posted about it, you big dork. I bought most of my games even before they started cracking down, and now I buy all of them. Sid Meyer himself has absorbed a good amount of my income over the years. What I'm asking is, does he deserve me funding his seventh yacht by buying the next iteration in a series I've had a ton of fun with in the past despite this one having pretty mixed reviews?

I honestly really should just start pirating more things to test them than just buying lots of random shit I think looks good when it's on sale and only finding out later it's garbage. This is especially bad with drunk buys. Saints Row was such fucking garbage I couldn't even get into it. I did at least find out multiple games were really shitty before buying them, including Master of Orion 4 and Stellaris which is pretty shit as base game. I have no idea why people hang off Paradox's dick so much. Plus side, I found out I could run Agony which I kinda thoguht I wouldn't be able to so one pirated copy at least led me directly to buying just based on the fact I found out I could play it and it actually was pretty cool from my test run.

Devs need to just release demos and do more free weekends because it's kind of a committment and Valve's return policy is super shitty because some games you can half finish in two hours and others like 4x games and city sims you really need at least like 10 hours just to find out if it's shit.

I have a much better idea why doesn't Valve make its return policy based on some number of achievements reached? Like if you play a 5 hour or even nine hour game you can get pretty into it in 100 minutes but 100 minutes in others takes that long just to build your character or set up new game or just fix the goddam bugs that riddle some of them since I've had some games I spent 5 fucking hours on trying to get it to run which racked up 5 hours in game time. Solution? ACHIEVEMENT COMPLETION. You would get knocked off at like 30% or 27% or 20% completion or something to not be able to refund. This way trying to fix stupid bugs or character creation screen you're still at 0% achievement completion and thus still eligible for refund. Played 4 hour game but got 50% achievements in 100 minutes? That's too bad, no refund for you.

I would feel bad about pirating Chrono Trigger if nintendo didn't rely on third party crackers to get the pirated roms to work on emulators in the first place. If Nintendo didn't care about their past games enough to keep hard copy backups of the original roms that would mean pirates are the only ones archiving and keeping that shit around for future generations.

Listen, I'm with you completely when it comes to archiving the stuff. I have all the games that were ever released in every region for consoles like the DS, Playstation, Wii, etc. And I don't feel bad about it and I think everyone should do it. But if you're pirating a recently released game that the developers put their heart and soul into working, you're really are just a scummy thief. Piracy is quite rampant, and it can really hurt the small guy. I've seen it first hand demotivate studios Into working on a sequel or quit their job all together.

I'll counter that argument with the release of Hotline Miami.

Cactus himself put the game up on pirate bay for the people wanting to pirate it, to keep it both up to date and to keep folks from getting computer aids. I ended up passing along a bug report through the pirate bays comments that he replied to and the game got hotfixed for it you could unarmed grab people through walls and go full stealth breaking nearly every level
I ended up buying 4 copies, one for myself, one for a IRL buddy, one for an internet buddy and a fourth for some streamer who was playing super metroid at the time.
I ended up with HM2 also.

The shit can hurt but it can help too; the dev's themselves just need to get a little creative.
Another example on the flip side was game dev tycoon putting pirates in its pirate copy of the game to fuck over players who pirated.

Good for him, and it might have motivated you personally to go and buy Four copies but we both know lots of people dont see anything wrong with taking the shit and leaving.
Nintendo estimates that they lose 300 million dollars on pirated copies of pokemon games with every release in Japan alone. Nintendo can handle it but imagine how much money Coctus lost because of this shit, money he deserves for his hard work. You want to be a dumb shit saying retarded crap like "big companies have more than enough money already" that's fine I guess, but dont steal from the little guy who worked for years trying to make his dream come true.

Thats one problematic things in this equation, the other is me feeling sorry that they didnt make 300 million on top of hundreds of millions of profit they make anyway, the last is the implication that vast majority of pirates would actually pay for the game if they couldnt get it for free.

Its not up to you to decide if a company has earned enough on a product or not. and 300 million is lost in sales in Japan alone, can you imagine how much the industry loses on a global scale?
Japanese games struggled for years to break into the western market and it finally did thanks to the Steam and other launchers. This will also motivate other developers to throw in their ideas knowing their game will actually sell, not get handed down from one potential buyer to the next in floppy disks or copied CDs. Face it, Tetra. Piracy is cancer and you are part of the problem.

Ignoring the "legality" of it, look at games that have strict online DRM. In that sense pirating can become a better choice. I never buy games when they are brand new usually, so I wait to see what bullshit there is. Or if I bought the game on another platform, I may not want to pay for it again.

Speaking as a bartender Va-11 Hall-A both interested and infuriated me since it's not an actual sim game, it's just a visual novel with made up drinks.

It should have been like a cross between a hardcore bartending sim and Papers Please. That would have been awesome for general audience and also semi-useful for people trying to get into the profession. It'd be edutainment.

Not that it's a bad VN, I mean, I like it quite a lot, and it does actually have something resembling gameplay, but it would just be SO MUCH BETTER if it were a hyper-realistic bartending sim that just happened to also be a cyberpunk visual novel.

That's a fucking game waiting to happen right there. Something like Microsoft Flight Simulator except for my job, and with the narrative style and presentation of VA-11 Hall-A. That would be a personal top 10 favorite for me if that game existed. Obviously I'm biased, but I think that shit would be great.

I enjoyed SOCOM Fireteam Bravo, the Star Ocean remasters, Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep and Crisis Core: FF VII.

Thinking about it, that's all I really played on PSP, outside an ATV Offroad Fury game

For you maybe, but the psp turned out the same as the Vita as the ultimate weeb machine of its time. You got a lot of Japanese RPGs for it, 7th dragon, P3P, Valkyria Chronicles. There is a huge number of visual novels developed for the psp too, some are still getting translated and released to this day. Also plenty of weird japanese games to mess around with. Just like the Vita, it got a lot more attention from Japan than North America.
It's great for someone like me. I own three PSP handhelds that I still play to this day. The list of games is long but if you ask me to reccomend you a game on the psp, I cant think of anything. Well, maybe Metal Gear Peace Walker but I think you can play that on the PS3 and it's a better version.

The Patapon series.

It's an RPG where you control an army of edgy minions with a drum. You punch in different commands to the rhythm and they follow them. You have to decide what you want to do according to what happens on screen. The little men have HP and if your army dies you lose. You can level them up and equip different shit. It's a solid game. Each game in the series adds more elements to the RPG aspect of it. I've spent the most time on 1 but have emulated 2 and 3 and they are pretty good. I really hope they port this series to the switch, it doesn't deserve to die with PSP.

LocoRoco is another solid series that died with the PSP. it would work really well with the phone if it has motion sensors. still a great game to play on any device.

I always thought LocoRoco would be a perfect game for the switch, too bad Sony has the rights. If they bundled 1&2 it would be a day 1 buy for me
I actually think the second one is on PS4 now I might pick that up some day

I'm not a weeb so it was a very lackluster platform for gaming. I had a handful of games and saw a lot of great potential but the smartphone just hit the right time in the market while the PSP was too early. I had maybe 10 games and the only 3 I remember is Midnight Club, Daxter, and The Godfather PSP game.

I still have mine but don't use it anymore, it held up surprisingly well. I used it all throughout my teens because you could at one time use it to get on the internet and thus I would have a roaming device to look at porn. It may as well been named the porn station portable because everyone I knew in school used theirs for the same thing. Parents didn't know what we were using it for and just thought it was a gameboy lol.

I'd gotten old enough around the time that WEP fell out of style to just use a computer for pronz instead of trying to change the firmware to use WPA to access the internet. Good times.

I agree but Sony will never let it go. I feel like a lot of games came out on Sony devices that could've fared a lot better if they weren't hard exclusives. Loco Roco is definitely one of them. Its such a perfect game for kids too, moving left to right either with the motion sensors or R1 and R2, and they could sing along since the lyrics were gibberish anyways. I'd be great if it found a place on the Switch.

There was a number of problems with the PSP, and the one that bothered me the most was the UMDs. It was amazing at the time, especially being able to watch movies on the handheld, but the battery didn't last long enough to watch some those movies and they were noisy as hell. Its a fucking CD reader in a handheld. I hated it. the PSP Go was a smaller version of it and less sturdy with less features, so they released to fix the problem but anyone who wasn't aware of that problem would pick the regular anyway so the PSP Go wasn't really thought out. I think its one of their worst sold devices. Even today i still own one.

I mostly used it as a music player and it was pretty damn good one too. Other than that, i didn't really play it that much for a long time until i got it hacked, once i did it was the perfect weeb machine and i still play it.

I did use use it for porn too. dang i think everyone did, to be honest. By the time it came out i was in my last year of college i think. i was so focused in my studies that for a couple of years i didn't play games at all, and the PSP, specifically Persona 3 Portable, that brought me back to my hobby. I think i was going through a really stressful time, and the melancholy theme of the game and its ideas really resonated with me. I graduated and got a decent enough job but i never stopped playing games since then.

I'd also like some hardware recommendations, because I'm looking for a new keyboard. Perhaps one of those of the gaming variety.

The problem, however, is that I need one that has these specific keys. After years of using this layout, it's always a pain if I need to use something else. I keep pushing the wrong buttons and it's hours and hours of frustration.

So would someone happen to know a gaming keyboard with these keys, in this formation? Microsoft and Logitech have them on some of their "normal" keyboards, but I've yet to encounter a gaming variant.

Here is the full image I used. It's not the keyboard(s) I own currently, but similar. Insert is only found on the numpad side. Personally I never use it, so I haven't been missing it either.

Ideally I'd like a fully customizable keyboard altogether, but the Del/Home-End/PgUp-Down thing is the only feature I really NEED.

But that's dozens and dozens of (work) hours. It just won't do. I have my preferred keyboards at home and at work. Sometimes however I need to do off-site stuff with crummy laptops - and I hate every second of it.

Perhaps, but not today. MS and Logitech still sell the keyboards I like, but I was just wondering if I could find a new keyboard for gaming. My friend always claims that his mechanical keyboard feels so nice. And I guess those LED lights might be fun every now and again.

"Gaming" hardware is usually bad. Not always but assume it's bad and see if you can disprove it.

My current keyboard is a "gaming" piece but it was cheap as chips and the build quality has been incredible. I mean it's edgy and the keys are mushy but it's comfy and the backlight does the job and it's outlasted a whole bunch of keyboards. However my previous gaming pieces have been overpriced poorly constructed crap. Applies to motherboards too.

I have pissed away so much money on shiny crap, you live and learn. Current PC is the most satisfactory rig to date. Still has a couple of quirks(lesson learned: Don't buy your PC straight after a new processor generation with new chipsets ships unless you're taking advantange of the previous gen getting cheap, It has worked out well before but you're really just rolling the dice, it's too much money to roll the fucking dice). If I did this more than every 3-5 years I might have gotten there sooner.

RDR2 or Planet Zoo and Armored Brigade? Recommend me, bitch. Because, look, I have a limited amount of time and money. And I get it. Red Dead's probably really good. But at the end of the day, will it let me build a zoo or invade Finland? Probably not. However, it will let me pretend to be a cowboy. On the other hand, cowboys, like zoos, are inherently lame - unlike cold war military hardware. On the other, other hand, sometimes they're alright. Yet, at the same time, sometimes zoos are alright, and sometimes crunchy wargames are boring. Thus, i am torn.

Mostly any mechanical keyboard with linear switches is great. Some brands focused on typing will focus entirely on tactile and clicky switches but I have no idea why because the linear switches are, and have always been just dandy for typing.

But then you have Razer bullshit with absolutely strange layouts.

Honestly the options aren't great and any of these keyboards is gonna last so goddamn long you'll basically be stuck with it or have to pawn it off on your friends.

I recommend a kit with Kailh box reds or linear Zealios, but honestly the zealios are a goddamn dollar a switch last I checked and can bite my shiny metal ass. Box reds are like 10 for 3 bucks.

I only recommend a kit because it's hard to find both linear switches and non-cherry/cherry clone switches. If you can find a full board stock with box reds go for it.
