So I grew up a Nintendo kid, didn't have much exposure to the PlayStation* and I got a furlough coming up so I figure now is the time to play things I missed. So does anybody got some classics they'd recommend? (especially quirky stuff, 2d, faster paced rpgs, racers, and puzzles)
Here's my list so far:

-Pepsiman
-Rayman 1 & 2
-MGS 1
-Super Gem Fighter
-Ape Escape

Also anything to avoid? Such as things that aged like milk and you couldn't get a modern child to play.

Spyro the dragon. It's surprisingly good looking for a PS1 game.
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee is a 2d platformer puzzle game.

>Quirky stuff
LSD Dream Simulator is a pretty odd experience. Don't go in expecting anything.

>Resident Evil: Director's Cut
The classic game, but with a bit more content than the original release. I love the REmake and everything, but the cheese and the atmosphere of this one is still fantastic.

>Resident Evil 2/3
Just more of the original. Brand new setting and two "new" characters in 2 and a brand new mechanic for 3. Still great games to this day.

>Silent Hill
It's Silent Hill, 'nuff said. Still holds up, still creepy as shit, still fun.

>Metal Gear Solid
Again another classic that spawned a bunch of sequels and prequels. Just the right amount of cheese and not as over the top as the other games in the series. Still very polished and fun.

>Final Fantasy Tactics
Do you like Final Fantasy? Do you like broken mistranslated Shakespearean dialog? Do you like tactical RPGs? Me too.

>Front Mission 3
Another excellent SRPG. You got giant mechs punching each other in the dick and you can browse an ingame version of the internet. It's a badass game and none of the sequels have lived up to this one. Pic related.

Then there are Tekkens, Grand Turismos, Crash Bandicoots, other Final Fantasies, those are all good too.

god, that's one really, really stupid image. The nintendo wii had 1534 games, while the gamecube had only 657. That means that the wii was a better console with a better library of games, right? WRONG. 1531 of these wii games are shovelware garbage. The ps1, much like the nintendo wii, was 99% shovelware garbage.

Ever seen a game on the nintendo 64 that's as bad as Cindy's Caribbean Holiday? Ever seen a game on the nintendo 64 that's as bad as rascal racers? Ever seen a game on the nintendo 64 that's as bad as Hooters Road Trip? THEN SHUT THE FUCK UP.

I mean I agree with your general point. The wii might have had as many as 10 good games not counting all the gamecube games you could play on it. It's fair not to count them.

The wii was THE console for wario ware and that pretty much validates it's existence.

Aludra is one I feel like everyone slept on.
It's a top down Zelda-LttP-alike with a Z axis for jumping and good sprite work and actual challenging puzzles.

Legend of Mana is in the same vein but has mind numbing game play so easy I could beat it with my ass. Better music, art, world and characters, just not any challenge or even stakes considering it's pretty hard to even die in the game.

Also, a release of the original Tactics Ogre, Let Us Cling Together and the first console to release that game's spiritual successor Final Fantasy Tactics.

The first US release of most FF games was on the PS1 by way of the FF origins and anthology collections that also gave most of us our first chance to play Chrono Trigger as well. As far as the FF's that released on the system 9 is the best, 8 is under rated and 7 is over rated but both are about the same level of quality IMO. I would recommend checking out any of the other myriad of Squaresoft games that came out before the Enix merger, this is arguably their golden age. Speaking of Enix Dragon Warrior VII for PS is better than the Dragon Quest VII re-release.

That was enough JRPGs to crystallize a handful of virginities so if you want a change of pace check out the Marvel VS. Capcom games. As far as platforms go you can't go wrong with Tomba! and the first Rayman. The early PS1 devs didn't quit using sprite art and actually made it bigger and more detailed than previous console generations could display so if you're into sprite graphics and not just poorly aged triangle peoples this is your console. Tekken is good though.

Most of the US didn't know about the FF series until 7 came out, which was around the same time as Pokemon came out. Before those 2 JRPGs weren't that big in the US and weren't widely available outside of Japan. There were a few US releases but they weren't as widely available as other games and weren't as popular then as they are now so word of mouth was still getting out about them and there wasn't as much about them on the internet. Right after the SNES got discontinued and PSX was big was when JRPG fever hit the west and you see the emulation scene get big as well as the early 00's being the golden era for fan translated roms Japanese only games.

Basically the gaijin had to develop a taste for it like sushi and bullet train groping and that wouldn't happen until the next console generation.

Legend of Mana is the first game that gave me the feeling that I was in it. You name your playable character and just plop into this little story book world you shape and none of the citizens know it. It also has blacksmithing, enchanting, magical instrument crafting, farming, and monster taming.

You should check out Saga Frontier. It's a completely different game as far as game play, it's actually really hard to lose and kind of too easy, but I think it was the same art team. It's a Square game from around the same time and visually has a similar feel to it. It's worth playing for a weekend.

A couple of games I didn't see mentioned:

Poy-Poy 2 (multiplayer is where it's at, but even solo is decent fun)
V-Rally - Arcade AF but still way fun
Bugs Bunny Lost in Time - This I don't ever see mentioned, but it is deffo a top-3 PS1 game for me.
Spiderman games - janky as shit, but still leaps of fun if you can look past that.
Pacman World - low-key a great Super Mario 64 rival with it's own mechanics.

Other than those, Ape Escape was decent, but I don't think it'll hold up like at all.
Crash Bandicoot series is/was one of the best platformers of the PS1-era (and CTR>Mario Kart imho), eventhough it went to shit after PS2 got released - but the PS1 games are definite classics.

Don't get me wrong I love Crono Trigger, i beat the shit out of it and got all the endings, but the combat in CT is waay to easy, its practically on rails. The unavoidable battles everytime you go through an area and what not.I dont remember getting a game over in CT. In Crono Cross I got fucked up because i didnt prepare and allocate my elementals right. Plus theres a few dual/tripple techs I never found my first time through because i didnt have certain characters.

Also, Dario was nearly impossible on the first run if you didn't steal the Black Plate from the Black Dragon. Say goodbye to Riddel at turn one if you don't have it.

That intro cinematic was on the demo disk that came with Vigrant Story, that might be where you saw it.
I still play that game, I have it on my phone in a psx emulator.
I felt so betrayed when the Harlequin abandoned me at the Pearly Gates. That was my pet character and the only one you can't hang onto in the final act. It was fascinating the way all your historic enemies become your allies by the end. Except Harle. She still betrays you.

Cant blame her for betraying you, it was in her programming to do so. Harle was just the kid of the Draconians.

Cross is so fucking bad I just left the jewel case on the sidewalk outside the Goodwill. I didn't even go inside to drop it in the box.

It wasn't played out when it came out. And did quite a lot that's new with the time travel.

I haven't been able to seriously play a JRPG since that era, though. They're all paced too slowly or the stories are too hackneyed. If it was one or the other I could deal with it.

the only JRPGs i've played seriously has been Star Ocean: The Second Story (was the first game i've played that had real time battle and the story was pretty fun for me) and Final Fantasy IX which for some reason I love to death but I can't put a finger on it

You're the only person on this board who's enough of a sadsack to read a video game script. It's not literature.

If you have time for that, when was the last time you read a book...?
