Anyone here fuck with Sonic hacks?
>make a fishing game out of Sonic 3
>Turn Sonic 2 into a fully-fledged Megaman game
>play as a can of Pepsi or even Kirby
The Mario hacking scene may have some cool stuff but the Sonic hacking community is fucking batshit crazy. Sega themselves even lets people upload their ROMhacks to Steam and even lets the authors charge money for them. That's fucking cool imo

A good one that's free to play is Metal Sonic Hyperdrive, it's fuckin bangin as shit yo

It has 10x track and car variety than Dirt, and 100x the phisycs. Theres an active modding and rally scene with many irl rally drivers playing it. Theres even VR support, you have no idea what youre talking about, but thats to be expected of a plebeian.

I used to play RBR until DiRT Rally came out. I didn't notice enough difference between the two for me to want to return to a game that doesn't even have native widescreen support.
Can you tell me what physics are missing in DiRT Rally? You can be elitist all you want, DiRT Rally will still eat your mother and fuck your dog if you try to play it like an arcade racing game.

Its easy mode, traction limit is way too forgiving, you dont need to be an expert to appreciate the adrenaline that comes from surfing the edge. Mario kart can fuck your dog too if you set arbitrary time limits liw enough. Widescreen is easy as fuck to set up if you can read webpages and follow instructions.

To be more precise, in Dirt Rally the point where you start losing the car in a slide comes later and is narrower than in RBR. This is, in a way, more difficult, but frustrating difficult. You have to push really hard to get on the edge, almost never getting there, causr the moment you get one inch over it you spin.
In RBR the edge comes sooner and more gradually, letting you slowly push yourself towards better times while learning anf enjoying the nuances of traction even at slower speed, just like in a real car.
Over all, difficulty is comparable, but enjoyment is not.

I have a cheap racing wheel(pic). I'm already regretting having such a specific controller, for such a narrow range of games. It's joysticks that I really like, all that versatility. And I haven't even gotten it set up ... if I could have two of them working, I guess that would be more motivating, that's what has been a great draw of racing games, split screen mode. I do have a pivotting monitor ... hah, like I'd actually be able to run any racing games in 9 by 16!? Would be small anyway. Now, a pivotting huge ass TV, that would split nicely.

So, that's my take on your issue, a cheap racing wheel could be very handy in a pair, or in an even greater set. Racing games seem to have damn near the highest social appeal.

Welcome to my world, I can't understand how joysticks faded out just because there's gamepads with *mini*joysticks. Except I've actually tried analogue gamepads, of course, and have been using them. But I still find them a highly crumby replacement for proper sticks.

Devoting a whole hand to one axis makes it quite straighforward to design it to be precise enough.

a racing wheel makes a big difference. Spend about $200 and get a decent logitech wheel with force feedback.

There is a bit of a learning curve getting used to using a wheel to control a car on screen but it doesn't take very long before it feels natural and force feedback gives you so much information about what your cars doing. It's way more than just a rumble feature with the right game and a good controller. You can actually feel when your tires are starting to break free in a turn.

Track IR is also worthwhile if you're serious about sims. It adds so much to be able to look naturally into the apex of a turn or check your mirror without having to fiddle with a stick or mouse.

My first wheel was like 50 bucks, and it honestly was about 95% of what fun I have now with G29. I gave it to a kid I know, and when I played with him recently I still had a great time. I bet theres second hand deals for less than that. All he needs is force feedback and hes golden. Extended rotation, smoother operation, premium plastic and more inputs is just icing on the cake and he can go for it once he knows its worth it.

Hmmm, I'mma have to be a bit of a spoilsport and agree with the skeptism about such difficulties in making force feedback that viable. Are you sure conspromises wouldn't be okay for now, such as buttholding force feedback? Although I've heard that the pictured implementation was worse than the competitor it had, the "battlechair" with a far more normal appearance.

I mean, I'd agree that even the next smooth, evolutionary step up from a racing wheel - a force feedback flight yoke, still could be too tricky to be market-viable.

What could a handheld force feedback controller even precisely be? One of those gamepads that bend/twist in the middle, like microsoft's attempt at an FPS controller? A joystick with a base designed for gripping?

Logitech and other companies have tried marketing consumer level FF flight sticks and yokes at various times and they never stick around. It's a niche in an already niche market. The market share is just too tiny and the turnover rate too small to keep something like that on the market... at least at a price point that most people are willing to pay.
