I'm a n00b looking for some game recommendations. I've really gotten into Defiance this past while back but am looking for something similar I can play offline. Basically something with an open world, side quests and in game clock, that you can waste loads of time exploring.

I echo this statement, and would even suggest playing the first two games in the franchise as well. They're all fun, solid games each in their own right.

'Open world' might be a bit of a stretch with those, but yeah they're absolutely worth playing. The first one requires a lot of tolerance for janky old mechanics, and is definitely an acquired taste (especially to get past the sloggy first section), but overall it's infinitely more interesting than something like Dragon Age, IMO. Not that I don't have fond memories of DAO but god damn does it feel kinda stale and lifeless in retrospect.

What he said was bull anyways, Witcher 3 takes its sweet ass time introducing each mechanic, which all are pretty basic once you get down to it. The first Witcher is a bit of a bitch to play once you're outside of Kaer Mohen but it's still managed to take more than an hour to explain all the mechanics properly.

I loved The Witcher 1. I loved the humor, the disgusting people in a miserable world, even liked the combat.
For some reason I just can't appreciate The Witcher 2, still have only finished 2/3 of the game in 7 years. The story, combat and graphics are such an improvement, yet something keeps pushing me away and I just don't know why.
I promised myself I wouldn't play The Witcher 3 until I finished 2... I wanna play 3 so baaaaaad.

Witcher 2 is console bullshit that's why. Witcher 1 was a strictly PC focused game iirc and it was actually pretty easy. 2 was basically focused on the console market which is why you get so many completely pants on head retarded things like now fist fights use WASD because clearly it was meant for whatever the fuck consoles use. It doesnt get better. Every step of the way you get reminded the game was made with consoles in mind including stupid boss fights.

Zelda 1 on the NES. Often imitated, never duplicated.

After that I'd say Majora's Mask, Link's Awakening, Link to the Past, and Windwaker, in that order. Windwaker would be way higher if that wasn't the game that officially made Zelda into super easy-mode playtime for babies. The atmosphere and art style are completely unforgettable but as a game it just ain't shit. Even Ocarina of Time is more challenging.

I am just getting into Middle Earth:Shadow or War. Game is awesome and has everything you asked for. And a sweet combat system with a huge amount of upgrades and new moves, tons of items, tons of enemies who all interact with each other and can be Recruited, and a bunch more but everyone should play this game.

From what I gather there was some loot box shit and people didn't like it when it came out in 2017, but that has all changed so I strongly recommend everyone try it even give it another go. You have to play a good amount of the story up to a mission "The Ettin" (or Ettun) in act 2 before you can start recruiting orcs and creating an army. That's when the game gets really good.

I don't have any idea what defiance is like but you might try Secret World Legends. It is free. It's technically an MMORPG but like no one actually seems to play it that way so it's basically like one long RPG campaign with tons of sidequests.

Why do so many people come on here and be all "recommend me games" anyway like what the fuck am I supposed to tell you if i haven't played your game if you even mention "a game like this" at all? I dont know what you mean by in game timer. If you mean open world rpg type game FNV isn't bad. It's not great but it isn't bad at all. The first Witcher game was pretty cool. I've heard much good about Witcher 3 but haven't gotten around to playing it yet. If you haven't already you should definitely try VTMB.

Best I can figure is you're asking us for ARPG recommendations. Is that correct?

Sorry it's just like, jesus how about this I recommend Wasteland 2, Tides of Numenera (which I just realized actually do fit your criteria funnily enough), Endless Space 2, XCOM2, Final Tactics, Cities Skylines, Tropico 3, EYE Divine Cybermancy, Fallout Tactics, Blackguards 1 and 2, This War of Mine, and the singleplayer campaign of Dawn of War 2.

Second Dawn of War 2 and DOW 2: Chaos Rising. Both excellent games.

I don't really recommend the campaign of Retribution as no matter which faction you pick, it'll play out the same with the only variations being what the characters say.

I wish DOW 3 went back to the Soulstorm planet wide struggle, now that was the hot shit right there but we got some gay ass faux moba shit no one in their right mind wanted.

Still mad about it.

Oh fuck I meant Final Theory. My brain accidentally words. It somehow combined Fallout Tactics and Final Theory into one game.

If you want recommendations by genre, or even general theme and setting, sure, or simply what I like and why which I can also do. Defiance confused me because I thought it was some online FPS game but your description was like an ARPG. There are many large world exploration games and they have tons of sidequests, and we call these games "action RPGs". They are basically third person (sometimes first) action adventure rpgs.

Gothic, Dragon Age Origins, Morrowind/Elder Scrolls are all like this. A similar genre is crpgs, which originally "computer rpg" meaning PC version of RPG pnp games like Dungeons & Dragons or Vampire the Masquerade ended up meaning a very specific type of often party based isometric view rpg namely Baldurs Gate, Planescape, Fallout and so on then later on Tyranny, Pillars of Eternity, Wasteland 2, Divinity Original Sin, Shadowrun there are many many AAA to indie games like this after revival in early 2010s and still are many more coming out next year like Baldurs Gate 3 and Wasteland 3 for example.

A lot has to so with perspective and thus mechanics and style choices. Third/first person=ARPG, even if it's party system like KOTOR and Bethesda Fallout 3/FNV; top down isometric view is crpg.

A huge number of games these days are actually pretty genre blurring though or stay true to one but use elements from another, sometimes poorly. People tried to say Witcher wasnt an rpg but it basically really was, maybe even a bit more so than Bethesda Fallout including FNV which basically are little more than exploration games with survival elements. As an RPG it's pure shit and janky as hell but pretty good for what it is which is exploring a ruined world. If you want to do that on a timer there's actual Fallout which gives a hard fail state by passing I think 183 days without finding water chip.

Dawn of War 2 is a really weird example which is probably why a lot of dumb kids call things like crpgs and real time tactics games RTS, because DoW 2 was billed as an RTS but for some bizarre reason they kept a pretty mediocre at best RTS-lite multiplayer campaign which itself was barely RTS and had no real base building or anything like that as first one did, and then had a weird tactical squad combat singleplayer campaign with RPG elements. As a fan of old school RTS, personally I think DoW 2s multi is complete shit, but the singleplayer campaign is practically the gold standard for WH40K gaming and storytelling on PC.

It saddens me how much 40K got basically saddled with an extremely stupid financially exploitive model business which is supposed to be "epic" but in reality has actually fewer troops on the field than one single battle in a single SC Broodwars battle on one single map and the lore absolutely doesn't at all help this completely schizophrenic approach to scale where certain shit writers talk about a mere 200 or 300 space marines holding back literally entire PLANETS from things like Ork and Tyranid invasions, even if it's on hive worlds. The numbers are just all completely fucked up and it's mainly because of the shitty model business of GW. I say this because multiplayer captures the bad part of that sense well. Singleplayer remains epic as basically a small commando team, rather than a few space marines killing trillions of tyranids or whatever Mary sue shit writer has to say about that.

It's true. All the base mechanics were weird but would have gone over totally fine if there weren't EXTREMELY micro-intensive units everywhere plus every grunt unit having grenades.

Nobody can play a bunch of MoBA characters at once and micro their space marines.

You guys wanna get angry about MOBA's creeping into RTS?

When C&C4 was in early alpha, some of the staff took some of the limited assets and turned the game into a MOBA as a fun little minigame. (Spun off from the old C&C gamerule option where you could redeploy your MCV to expand your base more easily).
EA saw that, and told the team to just quit working on the base RTS game and just expand the semi-MOBA mode.

It's janky but in a way that is reminiscent of old games where you have to figure out the engine, learn its quirks. Doesn't feel like other games at all. Maybe it requires being unpolished to feel unique anymore. Or just being quite daring. Probably it's nostalgia goggles that make the combat tolerable and even fun. At late game you basically break the combat anyhow, at least if you've paid any attention to your build.

I'll fucking never play ELEX.

Scifi and fantasy in one package? I'm cool with that. But not when it's as shitty designed as ELEX. Shit looks like someone made a scifi mod from free Unity assets for Skyrim.

And I don't mean the graphics look bad. I mean the design looks bad.

It's an open world roleplaying game. If you like that genre you'll probably like ELEX. If you don't, you won't.

I love open world roleplaying games. But I can't get into it if the design is shit. Probably why I never touched a Star Wars game since Dark Forces.
