It's all in the numbers:
#1: That's Terror.
#2: https://teamwork.tf/community/statistics/

Peaked at 20k players when the Halloween even started, maybe the biggest TF2 thing besides a real update. Numbers steadily went down from that.
>5 players trying to do competitive
>Requires 10

I figured if TF2 had any life left they would do something for Halloween, but they phoned it in yet again. Even I can't deny it anymore. Not many games have this kind of staying power.

I've been in denial about this for years, not sure what my next go-to game will be. Something with a bit of depth to it, but that I can hop into/out of quickly and won't die out in a year? Paladins?

Over 3000 people in casual and only 8 in competitive?

I never played tf2. Did some toxic strategy thing get discovered and now everyone does it so you cant win otherwise? I get that the game has been out forever but why the heavy weight to casual?

Are the casual modes different than competitive? Or do you just not get a new number next to your name when you win? If you love the game I bet you could find a group of regular casual players out of 3000.

Sometimes when an online game dies that's when it really comes to life. People bond and communicate more, I've made some awesome friends in games with struggling populations because if we didnt work together nothing would happen.

You're probably going in the right direction looking at something like Paladins. It's free and I see a lot of people playing, give it a try.

If I recall correctly, modern-style quickplay matchmaking didn't even show up in Team Fortress 2 until something around 2013 or so, with "competitive" matchmaking only showing up a little under 4 years ago. Twelve years is a hell of a life for a game.

I may be a biased old fart, but to me it never compared to TF classic, it was okay but I'm surprised it's even lasted this long.

You ever play a competitive team based game with a team of 11 other random players you've never met?
No one wants their rank tied to the ability of the other randos so they just play casual.

Also demoman is still the strongest class and always will be and not everyone wants to learn to counter demoman.

Plus if OP took his own pic he did it at 3AM EST, that's pretty much the opposite of peak hours. All the americans are still in school when I took this one and it's more than double what they posted.

Casual is sufficiently competitive IMO. You get high level play + chaos, and teams tend to be well-balanced.

TF2's still a great "can run on a potato" game. I was running it on an integrated graphics potato in 2008 when I was waking up in mild WDs to have some poppy pods ground up and placed in yogurt, and I run it on an integrated graphics potato in 2019 when I wake up and wonder where all the years went.

Still a great game.

And no, Paladins is faggotry. It was kinda fun before they changed around the card system to be more pay to win. Then it became confusing. Overwatch seems to want to add a new hero every 2 weeks and upset the class balance, as well as change around core mechanics of older heroes, so it's now basically unplayable unless you play constantly. Still was worth the $30, got 100 hours out of it. Paladins is too jank to recommend though. Just play TF2 until it dies, and then something will come out that should fill the niche better.

To me the game is fucking unplayable ever since the loot crates hats and customization infested it.

Leading up to the introduction of that stuff I was super pumped: "WHOO ALT LOADOUTS"
But then it turned out to come in the form of a pile of garbage.

Game's never gonna be as good as it was when it was just the fucking game. All available for the base price of a goddamn video game.

Honestly RIOT shitting out a ton of random game announcements recently makes no goddamn sense, but if they can break from the shitty trends of the gaming industry over the last 8 years, eschew their LoL business model and Overwatch's they'll have my fucking vote hands down.

It's actually never been that bad, and the alt weapons have opened some interesting combinations. You haven't played since the kritzkreig came out? What? You basically don't get to have an opinion about TF2. Many of the alt weapons are so fundamental to the game that it wouldn't exist without them. The only people clamoring for vanilla TF2 are people who think the original was a better game. It was fun as hell but not better by any means. Far worse

Nah I played it a bunch last year until I realized how much I fucking hate it.

Then I went all-in on Quake Champions before they released Doomguy with the most overpowered sprint-punch in the game and absolutely ruined the charm of a character shooter where the characters were totally secondary to the otherwise universal shooter mechanics.

Remember the old WoW days and people just shooting the shit on ventrillo?

That's what the TF2 playerbase has been for the past decade. Parents and drunks chatting about their daily lives on their favorite serves.

Also, fuck TF2 for introducing hats and the cosmetic market to every other game ever.

Pretty sure he’s talking about all the crafted purple items. Those most definitely have not improved the game.

I stopped playing TF2 about half a year after the engineer update, had a lot of fun when I did play it.
