But I'm worried that his grades are gonna go to hell. My grades certainly got assfucked when I got my NES as a kid. Should I wait more to buy him a console? Is he gonna be better off without a console?

I don't think we're the right people to ask for parenting advice but if you do make sure he plays GOOD games and learns to be pro at them

I am severely dyslexic and went to shit schools with a working single parent. My mom would read to me as a kid but I had a hard time with it. I couldn't read until about 3rd grade when Pokemon came out, I got into Final Fantasy a little bit after then was playing jrpgs all the time. The last aptitude test I took at school had me at college reading level and I just got a ged and started working at 16. Video games were my teacher.

I guess what I'm saying is buy him a gameboy and give it partial responsibility in raising him.

This. Get him started young with text heavy RPGs and stuff that encourages puzzle solving skills and strategy. Before you know it you'll be raising a hyper literate master tactician who will be orchestrating schoolyard warfare and manipulating his teachers because he's smarter than everyone.

How about you just be his dad? He can play it, but restrict his play time. Make sure he does his homework. Don't be a bitch about it.

Get your dumbass Kid a Nintendo Switch with the Mariokart bundle so he'll have something to play with others. It's the most accessible device in the market today for kids.
Download the Nintendo Switch Parental control App and get to decide how much play time he gets everyday and what time he gets it without worrying about touching the device.
I reccomend no more than an hour, it's what my niece gets and it's more than enough for her.

This. Use the games as a reward for completing homework and keeping grades up.

This tbh

College is only going to get more expensive and there are esports scholarships now. It'll make him a terrible person, but you won't have the foot the bill for his higher education.

Mine didn't get ruined by computer games. Being depressed and bored and having no expectations of happiness in life did me in.

If you really care and want to be a good parent you won't just leave him alone for hours at a time or use the games as a babysitter and ignore his school work (though a lot of parents do those things and blame everyone but themselves) so maybe give him a console. Give him a tight time limit per night and a bit more per week. If he spends a reasonable amount of time doing homework and obviously does it well, if his teacher praises his effort (not just his results) give him more time. Use it to reward him doing well? Make sure he knows it's because he's trying hard at school. Also make sure he isn't playing video games instead of hanging with friends. They aren't mutually exclusive (especially when he's a bit older and can handle competition/cooperation better and better) by any means but it's still a risk.

Also avoid stuff with microtransactions, stuff that's aimed at 18 year olds and full of 13 year olds and shit like that. Some games are better than others for things.

Maybe you just want to wait a few years and be sure he's developing well and then consider the above issues (and I'm sure I missed some) again.

If you want to be a good *anything* then there's no simple answer. This is not a yes/no question.

That's one approach to life. If you go that route, not everyone knows you're a scummer, but those who are smart enough to figure you out will have nothing to do with you. Being guileless also opens doors.

Buy him a Wii or PSP or something easy to hack and hack it with him, put some emulators there, start him off with older stuff so he wont have to deal with modern gaming and maybe maintain his innocence a bit longer

Get him oblivion. Its rated t/m, but if you didnt raise your kid to be a bitch he'll be fine. Either that or get him a pc and emulate banjo kazooie/tooie, legend of zelda, mario 64 etc. Pretty much nintendo games or like spyro/crash and shit.

I would recommend the 3DS if it wasnt so heavy compared to the PSP. Its difficult to get your 7 year old kid hooked on retro gaming so I still suggest he gets him a switch.

Kinda difficult to find a PSP in good Condition but the Vita is everywhere and more powerful so hacking that thing and jamming games in it better. The OLED screen looks fantastic with Nintendo games for some reason especially Pokemon so I reccomend it. Also getting him into Japanese Role play games in the end game so install Persona 4 in there and see if he likes it.

OP ive thought alot about this since im thinking of having kids soon too. Weird i don't feel like an adult despite being solidly in my 30s

I think this guys is on the money.
My grade started to slip not because of video games but because of puberty and being a teenager.
I got my first console in 6th grade but was a fine student and kid until highschool.
I think gaming and being a weirdo aren't mutually exclusive.

Don't let games replace parenting and time spent together.
Play with your son.
Put the console in the living room and limit time spent on it.
I was only allowed game time if all my homework was done.

I would even recomend getting him a retro console like the snes and big stack of games so he can't be slowly brainwashed by social media and share culture.
It may give him a deeper appreciation of those things latter in life when he gets them.

Pic related, my favorite game as a kid even tho every one every where thinks its an unbalanced pile of shit.

I was a child of the 90's and my parents let me be raised by TV then games then the internet.
Then when they realized this I was in my 20's and I was already my own person, a person they didn't know or relate to at all.

The Vita is powerful little device and you can do a lot with it. Still kinda expensive if you buy it locally but I got pch-1001 with the OLED screen from Osaka for dirt cheap and it's been great.
A little warning though, the battery for the Japanese model has a slight different battery than all the others and they are difficult to find but it's worth it for the price difference.

Well not exactly but I still think some video games are bad for children. Games that fuck up their attention span or try and create habits but those are mainly found in the Phone and iPad stores. Those games are made specifically to create addicts and gamblers out of children

Definitely this. OP you're a good dad for asking this. I'd recommend trying to help him with his homework if he really needs help, just be there to help him problem solve. Also, yes try to incentivize doing homework/chores with videogames as a reward.

I grew up on a little bit of everything, with way too much free videogame time but I turned out pretty OK. Pretty intelligent, not socially awkward necessarily (I've fostered a somewhat misanthropic view as a result of my own personal drug choices), physically in good health, my main problem is drugs. Anyway, best of luck OP!

Lol I dont know if this is the right way to raise a kid, but my friend knows his son loves video games/anime and from a young age, like hes loved that shit since he was like 5. As the kid got older and wanted to buy games and shit my friend came up with a rule, on top of giving him like 10 bucks a week for chores, hed also give him a penny per push up/sit up. And a dollar for every mile he ran. The kid just started highschool and hes in shape, plays sports and is quite popular, even though hes a huge weeb. Loves Sword Art and the Persona series. Its a strategy I would suggest to most parents of weeaboos. My friend also loves videogames and anime so that might be why he came up with it. Hes also Mexican, so from a cultural standpoint, liking videogames and anime isnt that weird. And he lets his kid play and watch basically whatever he wants, as long as its not porn. He spends alot of time with him too, and I think thats the main thing, like going hiking and fishing and shit.

You're asking how to raise your kid on 420chan.

Throw him an xbox and Morrowind and watch as he retreats further into isolation while other kids are talking about whatever got the heaviest marketing each winter.

He'll get suspended for calling the transfer student N'wah.

You ground him from games and he goes to the nearly abandoned library. Looking through books, he finds Angelic Layer in the Manga section. Harmless enough. Let these seeds grow within him naturally.

Give him the life he deserves.

I don't see an issue with adding variety to his choices of what he can do at home. If you teach him to not be excessively on the video game console I don't see issues emerging. There's no chance he'd fall on the path of video game addiction. lol I don't know that I fully get video game addiction. What's the point of it? All the various physical drugs are available and take so much less effort to take. lol

Your grades went to shit because your parents didn't pay enough attention to you, not because of the NES. If you don't have the time to sit with your kid and go over their school work, you're failing as a parent. The NES doesn't have much to do with that.
