This is the game of the year thread. What was your favorite game you played this year and why?

My game of the year is Terra Nova Strike Force Centauri, the game where you play as commander of Strike Force Centauri, a militarized, interplanetary police force. You select up to 3 strike force members to accompany you each mission, pick out everyone's equipment and then drop into the mission where you play in first person and command your squad mates. I was really drawn in by it because the missions are so open: every map is outdoors and you can manouver your squad effortlessly to scout positions, sabotage equipment or lay traps. The enemy always has more numbers, so creative tactics are required to keep everyone alive and complete the mission: lay a minefield and lure the enemy through it, use a planet's low gravity to jump over enemy fortifications, send in your demo man to plant remote detonated bombs at the enemy rally point and wait for them to assemble. With quick load times I had an easy time retrying missions, experimenting with different squad members, tweaking loadouts, forming the perfect plan to get everyone home with full health. It was a really good time.

RE2. Greatest remake ever. Great extra content. Only game I've ever bothered to speedrun seriously, even though I never placed on any of the charts with times about a week behind the top 10 competitors I am very proud that I managed to close the gap from +20 minutes over top place and eventually achieved sub 1hr runs for Leon normal.

The are a few plot and continuity holes introduced in the remake, as well as lacking in key protagonist meetups during the course of the game. But all-in-all this is essentially the only thing the remake didn't succeed in improving upon over the original.
Guest character segments really stick out as by far the most improved aspect of the game as well as Mr. X being a hardcore stone-cold motherfucker in a way that was not even attempted in the RE series until the titular Nemesis.

If REmake 1 was the classic survival horror formula perfected, RE2 is where the modern RE4 formula is finally unified with its survival horror roots, proving to be much, much more than the sum of its parts.
It's not just the best game this year, it's the best game in the whole damn series.
And people who say remakes shouldn't count for GoTY are brainlet CHUDs. What if the Academy Awards worked that way? Can you even imagine? True Grit? Not even a nom. Scarface? No consideration, sorry, made that shit in the 40's. The Departed? Fuck you, you're not asian.

Green Book? Why step right the fuck in, sir.[%] [%]And BTW Outer Worlds is the Green Book of the Game Awards Green Book was a racism movie for whites. Outer Worlds is the mind-blowing RPG experience for people who think New Vegas, the game Obsidian rushed out in 18 months was the absolute pinnacle of RPGs

Personally I'm loathe to declare an anything of the year until a few weeks maybe months after the year ends. You need to let every release happen and you need to actually give them time so you enjoy them. If you have an award session in November what happens to later releases? Stuff released before nominations open gets fucked? Does it count as next year? How can you know if something that's been out 3 days is the best shit of the full year?

I don't think anyone thinks FNV is the pinnacle of RPGs though even the people for whom it's an all time favourite. Outer Worlds was solid as fuck but not ambitious enough to be a masterpiece.

Disco Elysium actually did better with critics than users. But it's just below the "best of all time" tier for both though. I think it needs another few months for us to see the legacy it's going to earn. While I enjoyed Outer Worlds immensely it's clear already it's not an all time classic already. If it was, it wouldn't be apparent so soon after launch. But it clearly isn't.

As for Death Stranding, no one even knows if it's good yet.

Looking at various GOTY lists. Only one has declared a winner.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Game_of_the_Year_awards

>Golden Joystick, one of the biggest and oldest: RE2

The academy awards are bullshit though, and whether a remake counts should be case by case. Does it do something new? Is it an experience that offers something the old one didn't? Is it just a lot better done? If so yes. Golden Joystick obviously think so for RE2.

Easy. Resident Evil 2. Only other games I've played this year were Astral Chain, Sekiro, Smash, and currently Death Stranding. Also, I'm not sure why Death Stranding is already being nominated. Personally I don't have an issue with it, but I can understand why so many other people absolutely hate it.

Disco Elysium. There were a few annoyances here and there but overall it was sublime: amazing writing and worldbuilding, great atmosphere, themes that really resonated with me, lots of risks, neat roleplaying systems that meshed with the storytelling in interesting ways, longform jokes that turned into surreally transcendant moments the actual spoilers fucking cryptid, etc etc. Even RDR2 PC doesn't come close - I love it but am not clicking with the theme as much and standard open world fatigue is setting in. I guess if you count games I played this year that came out earlier, MGSV is up there.

I'm saying the industry people who vote on this shit haven't played it for more than an hour.
And by an hour I mean to chapter 3, where you actually get stuff and information.

Honestly it's gonna be another week or two before even the people who have been playing it a lot have solid opinions about it.
The game got released at a perfect time for award season. The only reason I have a well reasoned opinion about Sekiro or Resident Evil 2 is because I'm not still in them right now. That's what review means, having to vote on a game while you're still in it isn't review it's just 'view'

I rated The OA on Netflix a 2/10 stars because the ending pissed me off.
Also me, rated fucking CRASH a 9/10 because I'm a fucking idiot that can be played like an emotional fiddle.

Then I looked through my IMDB ratings several years ago, realized they were HORRENDOUS ratings and revised them. This is why you gotta at least finish, if not put as much distance as possible between you and the subject matter.

Reviews can in fact be too fresh. Like an unripe avocado.
That's the entire reason TotalBiscuit and the like call their shit commentary and impressions.
If you're judging for game of the year on impressions instead of retrospective views that could easily affect your judgment, and Kojima is a goddamn genius.

I think Untitled Goose Game is the only game actually released in 2019 I've played so far so I guess I'll pick that. Glancing over the list of releases it doesn't really seem like I missed much apart from Sekiro, and I'm saving that for later.
Been playing a bunch of Hitman 2 (2018) lately and it's still getting content released for it so that might as well be a good candidate too, even tho it's technically from last year.
Fuckit, it'll just have to be whatever Arma is the latest as it's been since OFP

I've never heard anyone here even talk about it, so I might be alone here, but 2019 GOTY:
>Supraland

It's like Metroid Prime, Portal, Zelda, and a dash of Quake, starring a cast of toys and set in a child's sandbox. Made by one guy. It's delightful, and has a generous demo.
https://store.steampowered.com/app/813630/Supraland/

Honorable mentions:
>Dragon Quest XI S
>Mario Maker 2
>Resident Evil 2
>Link's Awakening
>Control
>Cadence of Hyrule
>Yoshi's Crafted World

Still waiting to play:
>Red Dead Redemption 2
>Luigi's Mansion 3
>Death Stranding
>Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair
>Disco Elysium
>Terraria: Journey's End (actually just read this was pushed to 2020, fuck)
>DMC5
>Sekiro
>Outer Worlds
>Astral Chain
>AI: The Somnium Files

Games I played that released this year:

Senran Kagura Burst Renewal
Senran Kagura Peach Ball
Resident Evil 2
Gun Gun Pixies
Atelier Ryza
Touhou 17 - Wily Beasts and Wicked Creatures

Looked at as a whole my vote goes to Atelier Ryza. I didnt even beat it yet but that game is gorgeous and charming.

To be honest, I cannot find a better candidate than Sekiro - almost everything is perfect in it, apart from the soundtrack, which just didn't click with me.

Don't even know why that walking simulator was nominated, but I guess it's a solid interactive movie. Haven't played RE2 though, who seems like strong contender.

My personal GOTY is definitely Baba Is You. Haven't loved a puzzle game this much since The Witness. Got 60 hours on my file and I've still got a lot left to figure out. Never had a puzzle game kick my ass this much while still being thoroughly enjoyable. The feeling of satisfaction you get when a puzzle's solution finally clicks is intoxicating.

Only other really major 2019 games I've gotten have been MHW: Iceborne (haven't played much tbh, think I ultimately just don't enjoy World-style MH as much as previous gens), Death Stranding (only picked it up recently so don't have a super well-formed opinion on it, but enjoying it so far), and Ring Fit (surprisingly fun and I never put aside time to exercise so it's been good for getting me moving a bit). The new BoxBoy! game was also not bad but having three campaigns in it stretched each one thin and as a result it never gets as challenging as previous entries (the Qudy campaign was really neat though, would buy a fullsize BoxBoy game based around that in a heartbeat).

Only remaining game coming out this year that has a chance of toppling Baba Is You is Wattam, but I have a hard time believing I'll find it as substantial and interesting in the end as much as I love Keita Takahashi's games. Also very interested in getting Disco Elysium, even though I don't normally enjoy RPGs.

I wanna say Bloodstained but if being honest I prefer Order of Ecclesia. Maybe I need to go back and play it but It feels OoE was a much more solid game than Bloodstained. I know visually it does, there are moments when I'm playing Bloodstained I whence or cringe at how ugly the background is.
Nothing deserving of goty yet.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, I love it so much. That and cuphead are hands down two of the most addicting games I played both this year and my whole life. MK8's tracks are just so gorgeous and creative really the only one I can think of that I dont like is the excitebike arena because its just boring as shit to race on but I understand that they had to keep it simple in the spirit of the original game. I've got 75 hours clocked in and still have to get the 3 gold stars for mirror and 200cc for like 5 cups. Then I have to do the time trials for those cups. Time Trials are definitely my favorite thing to do, racing against ghosts of actual nintendo employees is a blast and you dont have to worry about getting shelled every 5 seconds. I have no doubt that when i'm done with it i'm probably going to be over 120 hours, and i'll probably will play it off and on for years just racing online.

Honorable mentions of other games I played this year and really enjoyed:
Cuphead
Moonlighter
Marble It Up
Akane
Sekiro
Human Resource Machine
Salt and Sanctuary
Hyper Light Drifter
Hitman first season
Baba is You
