So i played a few games of Smash at a friends and it seems like a cool game i'd like to play a little more since i never got to play the smash games when i was younger.

Is buying a switch worth it right now or should i wait for the price to drop further since i'm kinda broke? Which other games beside BotW can I look forward to trying?

I already have a wii which i modded to emulate pretty much any old game i want so i'm not desperate to upgrade for that purpose.

I'd say go for it. You can get a Switch Lite for $200, or less if you buy used or on sale. Switch is probably my favorite Nintendo system since the SNES, and there are a lot of games to check out. Besides Smash and BOTW, I'd recommend:

Mario Maker 2
Mario Odyssey
Mario+Rabbids
Mario Kart 8
Luigi's Mansion 3
Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
Dragon Quest XI
Picross S1-3
Octopath Traveller
Snipperclips
Splatoon 2
Xenoblade Chronicles 2
Yoshi's Crafted World
Voez
Deemo
Hyrule and Fire Emblem Warriors
Link's Awakening Remake
Cadence of Hyrule

There's also Animal Crossing coming out next month, plus BOTW 2, Bayo 3, Metroid Prime 3, Xenoblade Chronicles Remastered, Rune Factory 4 and 5 in the pipeline. You can also get a ton of good indies and some impressively optimized ports of AAA games like Witcher 3, Skyrim, Doom, etc. that are obviously inferior to their PC counterparts, but great if you need to get your fix on a portable.

Are you looking to get a regular switch or a lite? Lite is cheaper but obviously comes with a few drawbacks. You can still use any Bluetooth controller you’d like so the non detachable joycons shouldn’t be an issue.
Tbh there has been rumors floating around for a bit now of Nintendo making a “switch pro”, considering the likelihood of that happening if you are broke I’d just wait until after the next general direct or even E3. If they do end up announcing it you should be able to get the regular standard switch for cheaper after it releases.

There's been Switch Pro rumors since the original Switch came out. Not saying it will never happen, but I wouldn't hold my breath on it happening anytime soon, especially with the Lite still being fairly new.

what's the drawbacks of the lite? haven't heard much about it, as long as i can soft mod the shit out of it and get all my emulation running I think i'd be happy.

The big one is it's handheld only from what I understand. Pretty substantial

you also can't remove the joycons which means when they inevitably start to wear out and the stick starts to drift its a total system repair instead of a new accessory to buy

I wouldn't buy one with the intent to soft mod, but I would get one that connects to TV.

I was playing through Dark Souls in portable mode and my hands hurt so bad after a few hours. Shooters are kind of painful too on those tiny controllers.

thats why you get the satisfye grip.
I mean it sucks that we even have to buy grips to make it more comfortable to play but its very comfortable with the grip.

You don't need to have the controllers attached to the Switch to play it in portable mode. Just get a stand for it or prop it up on your blankets. I used it for about 1 hour with the controllers attached before switching to that. Would never go back. Don't understand anyone who holds that thing that long.

wait did someone really recommend i buy a version of the switch that you can't even plug into tv or use other controllers on when i mentioned in OP that i'm particularily interested in smash?

Also to the guy who mentioned not getting one to soft mod is there any reason why not? Is it overly difficult or some other problem with softmodding a switch that i am unaware of?

I may be wrong but I don't think there is much you can do in the realm of hacking that thing. You can run android on it, which I considered briefly and never tried.

You said you didn't need something for emulating older games so I assume you want to play backup games, which if possible isn't going to be easy to do and keep playing Smash online at the same time.

There's quite a bit you can do, but I'd be worried about doing any more than overclocking.

Dont buy a console if youre sort of broke, that would be pretty dumb.
