I think he might be referring to crysis 2 and 3? https://boards.420chan.org/vg/src/1581551252327.jpg Crysis 2 and 3 have lots of parallax and tessellation that give it the appearance of having really high poly counts, but you can't compare that with actually having billions of polys on a scene, like this unreal demo showcases.

Too much artistic lighting. Makes things look fake. Too much detail on small objects far away. I'm slightly farsighted, and I can't see pebbles with that much detail from 20m away like when the rocks fell down the cliff face.

I wonder when companies are going to focus on making the actual GAMEPLAY better instead of constantly updating graffics, I mean imagine what kind of games we could have had if we stuck with 2007 tier visuals. Probably a lot more in depth games than we have now (or not considering the turn the industry has taken.)

Yeah, it's a tech demo that's actually being played real time on a ps5.

Yes perhaps it doesn't look utterly photorealistic, but it looks better than anything else that's ever come out.

Are you kidding right now? For the love of god show me something being played real time that looks anywhere near as good as this.

I'm not saying graphics aren't getting better, I'm saying the people behind the art are too into "OOH PRETTY" and not what looks real. It's beautiful. But it's not realistic because they added too much detail in some places.

No such thing as too much detail. Have you ever stared at real grass?
That said, it will take some clever procedural generation to nail down the fractal nature of reality and maybe the demo has too many pebbles or something.

Maximum Action,

Graphical realism is finally catching up with the lack of graphical innovation/attention to detail. There was a period where every "realistic" looking game was just a bunch of annoying lighting effects and a million GPU filters added on. Before that, developers actually had to be creative and make their games look awesome using limited technology. Games like Prey, Half Life 2, Chaos Theory, Doom 3. I find those type of games to be more immersive than most of the "realistic graphics". I am still waiting for when bumpmapping and bloom become the new "retro".

This new tech is getting pretty mind blowing though.

Google hash checks. That's how you verify your files are not fucked with, regardless of where you downloaded them.

Find the hash of the original file and check if the file you downloaded has the same hash.

Nevermind you were talking about cracks. But you can manually download your windows updates and hash-check em if you feel like it, and then you wont have any reason to activate your pc. If you are not activated I assume you can't install updates which is a pretty big security issue itself

I notice LOD pop in on basically every open world game and on most it’s pretty jarring. Try driving in a fast car on GTA V. Objects constantly appearing 20 meters in front you.

It's hard to compare generations because even AAA games of each generation will have technology that's a decade+ behind, modern tech that's inconsistently implemented, or clever ways of hiding limitations.

I just want real-time shadows from multiple dynamic light sources.

People want wireless tech and omnidirectional treadmills and full body suits that can mimic an impact. This is the late 90s all over again. Yes, we can put a VR headset on someone and place them inside the game. Is it a comfortable experience? Not to most people, who easily get motion sick. It's also unwieldy having to use the controllers instead of gestures.

The possibility is there, but companies don't want to invest the money because the returns are risky. VR is something that either works really well or really badly.

I get plenty immersed with current controllers and without any of that treadmill shit.

I just want higher resolution, higher FOV, and more games. Low FOV is the number 1 thing that takes me out of presence, because it feels like I'm lookng through a hole in the wall.

I'm not saying current VR isn't okay, it's just not fully immersive for most games. I enjoyed RE7. It worked well. Superhot VR was a lot of fun and utilised VR properly. I don't get motion sickness, though. That's why I'm talking more about the public perception of VR in my previous post instead of my own. Anything involving movement while standing is a bit disorienting if you're not walking, which makes FPS games difficult to make for VR. A joystick is a poor substitute for actually walking, and most people want to hold up a facsimile gun to aim, which makes standing the optimal way to play.

My only real problem with VR is a few small kinks. Like every character I play as in VR is a foot shorter than I am IRL. Very hard to deal with. Makes me clumsy. The FOV should be better, as you mentioned. I don't think more games are needed, I think we need people to rethink game design before they go pumping out more crap that would have been better without VR (like NPC simulator) and could have been done without it. Or more on rails, shooter tech demos.

Maybe make Black and White have a return? That would be a cool VR game, I think. Actually signing the spell symbols with your hands, backslapping or petting the creature, etc. You'd actually be tossing boulders and spells with the motion of tossing. God games seem like an interesting VR niche.

Black and white would be awesome in VR. On Pavlov VR, while spectating, you can do this thing where it goes into a god view and it’s like watching little action figures that came to life, it’s really neat.
