Say what you will about the quality of the games but the original 2D Sonic trilogy is by far and away the most mechanically intricate platformer of that era

The physics system in those games is so deep it's fucking absurd

The problem with Sonic was letting the programmer be the main gameplay director

Yuji Naka is a genius programmer but an absolute fucking retard when it comes to actual game design

did anyone as a kid ever beat a sonic game without using the level select cheat code? The game gets quite frustrating with its limited lives and continues. On my third or fourth game over I gave up on trying to finishing the game, I mean come on, dying in the middle of the game and doing it all over again? That's extreme shenanigans. And I'd not feel good about beating the game using cheats, so I just gave up.

Sonic is only slightly harder than something like Kirby

The games are piss easy, when you look back at the reviews at the time most people agreed that while being great games, they lacked any sort of actual challenge

Sonic 2 got harder after the first few levels. I never got past oil ocean.

I grew up on Sonic 2. It was awesome. Especially for something that was packaged with the console. And in the age of the platformer, physics and tight controls made a winner. BUT, when 2D became 3D, it couldn't keep up and Crash Bandicoot was far better suited to the new generation of consoles.

Am I the only person who hates crash? I always thought the controls were clunky and the gameplay was so linear it hurt.

Hate might be too strong, but I always considered it a B-list series compared to Mario, Banjo Bazooie, Spyro, etc.

Naughty dog has always been good at making polished games. Even when it comes to their platformers. Their games really shine when you play them on the hardest difficulty. The Time challenges, and box collecting gems is where its at in Crash Games. Uncharted and TLOU are way better on the hardest difficulties, its a balanced but challenging experience. If you think its linear or shallow, try to go after what Naughty Dog considers Extra content. That's where the game really is.

The first was a bit clunky, but so were all first generation 3D platformers. In the remake they rounded of the hit boxes, and that actually made the game significantly worse, because you could slip off of things so easily.

I'm not one to shit on things unprompted, but Crash is trash IMO and it baffles me that anyone considers it anything better than a lower midtier 3D platformer at absolute best. When I got my PS3 and was finally able to access the PS platformers I'd missed out on I bought Crash 1+2 and Spyro 1+2 and was immensely disappointed in Crash. Spyro's pretty good though.
