I remember when I couldn't afford games and they never went on sale. Now they go on sale and I end up collecting them. Back then I'd buy a title new play it to completion then move onto something else.

i tend to buy one game at a time, milk the shit out of it and move on, at least for PS4. On steam I got like 300 games... Because of their dirt cheap sales. Frankly I am never going to get around in playing those.

Had the same problem as you until I just stopped buying games on sale unless I knew I was going to play them right then and there
When you have too much to play you don't know what to play and end up playing nothing or replaying shit you already played
Work your way through that backlog even if you have to do it alphabetically.

I've finally started making good progress on my backlog this year (my backloggery page says I'm +13 right now for games beat or completed versus games bought)

Started by intentionally picking out interesting but short games I've bought and beating them over a weekend. Also kept an eye out for relatively easy games I shelved near the end to go back and finish. And like Jimmy says, I'll only buy games on sale if I plan on playing them in the very near future (and again helps when they're short and weekend-beatable). It's also important I think to be playing bigger games at the same time so it doesn't feel like you're only crossing things off a list. I've played through a couple 20+ hour games in series I love concurrently with these smaller games.

The momentum itself starts to feel good and can keep you going. I also recommend setting up a backloggery page so you can be aware of your progress (although your first year's progress will be a bit of a wash since that's when you input your entire library)

I stopped giving a fuck about backlog. I have 19 games on steam alone that I've never even played. Which means I never bothered to install them. That's not counting all the others that I just lost interest in and might play some other time. I bought the game to enjoy, not to treat as a second job. Besides, the more games I have in my backlog, the better off I am when I'm broke.

Does it count as a backlog if it's just a bunch of extra keys you've picked up from bundles? I've got over 1,100 games in my Steam library alone, and I doubt I'll even install 75% of them. Games I actually consciously purchase, I'll try to at least sink a couple of hours into to, but honestly if something is not immediately at least an 8/10, I'll fucking drop it and move on to something that is because the market is just stupidly saturated with too many excellent games to waste time on anything that's just "OK". Sorting by most recently purchased is generally how I work through my list.

Maybe when you dont know what to play its your aging subconscious mind telling you to get another hobby or go outside or get a job or something.

I just buy games I really want to play and avoid most AAA-titles that play all the same.
Then I pick two genres I can play and change things up inbetween.

Im not the one who made the thread or care for any recommendations, I can just understand how someone would go and ask how to get through their backlog. I sometimes have the what do I play next problem, if theres a good deal or sale I usually get it.

I finished my Backlog a long time ago. I just stopped buying games for like three months, sat down and decided to play all of them. It was pretty awesome time I have to admit, and a little frustrating. Now I just kinda moved on to something else. I pick a Franchise or a genre I never really explored and I go at it. I usually play DooM on the side to not get overwhelmed or it would start to feel like a chore. You always need like a side game to play while playing something new to help your confidence every now and then. That's for the real players though. If you don't finish a game every week then you don't have to worry about anything.
