Mods have declared that this is now also a nature and landscape board due to it's association with travel. Any thoughts?

Backpacking/Thru Hiking/Hiking general

This is a thread to discuss Thru Hiking, also called backpacking and also hiking in general. Not to be confused with the other type of backpacking: traveling around for cheap with just what you can carry on your back. This thread is a bit more specific and is for discussing trail hikes or even backcountry trailblazing. Techniques, supplies, gear, luxuries, psychology, physical preparation and effects, etc.

What's your favorite hike you've done? My favorite was the Hidden Canyon Trail in Zion National Park. It had a beautiful view, some really sketchy segments (the trail was cut into the side of a cliff and it was so narrow that there was a chain on the side of the cliff to hold onto) and I even got to see some mountain goats.

Shit also, my Merrell Hiking boots. A lot of people say use trail runners but I've found ankle support to be invaluable on the trail because when you're in the groove it is pretty easy to step on a rock and twist and ankle.

I hitched across europe like 4 times. Not exactly hiking but its hiking adjacent.

I seriously underestimated what gear to bring first time out

Things I should of had but didn't.

A better tent (not a one person boddy bag essentially)
Sleeping mat
Better shoes
Lighter and more compact gear. But it seems most "compression" gear is massivly more expensive.
bigger bag. ( chose a 50L bag, I should of chosen the 70L)

Van life

I'm starting an extended road trip in my camper van tomorrow.

I'm doing this because I'm pretty sure I have avoidant personality disorder and every tactic I've tried to force myself to interact regularly with people I know has failed. Anytime I socialize with people my brain just goes into fucking retard mode afterwards and keeps summoning up memories of things I did that I rationally know are no big deal at all and giving me horrible anxiety over them. It's worse with people I know and care about. My rational mind is a slave to my emotions; I'm just not strong enough to push through. I figure at the root of the issue is a lack of self esteem and a lack of self control. I think I can work on both by training martial arts and getting out of my room and acquiring more life experiences.

In the past when I tried to take martial arts classes I always felt like I embarrassed myself and wasn't able to make myself go back. On the road I can just go to a new place and start all over fresh each time, abusing free trials so I don't have to pay for the lessons. It will be a good way to get some exposure therapy while still satisfying my avoidant tendencies. Regular interactions and friendships will come later hopefully.

My first destination will be Florida to wait out the coldest part of the year, then I'll start heading west to California and then go north up the coast as the seasons change so I stay nice and comfy. Looking forward to that legal weed out west. I have some tools I can use to earn some money and some savings, so I hope I can keep it going for a while.

I guess I just made this thread so I have somewhere to talk about what happens, although anyone else is free to talk about similar experiences ITT. I hope you don't mind some blogposting. Wish me luck.

Hey /vroom/,

So I've been saving money for a year now and living cheap at my parent's place with the general plan that "I'm going to go travelling when I feel ready." Well, I have around 10,000 saved and am feeling pretty ready to go out and do something!

So initially I thought of backpacking for a few months, but plane tickets would eat up most of my savings and then when it's over it's over, time to save money again.

Then I thought of two other things I'd like to do - living in an RV or a Sailboat.

I have years of experience with both RV camping and Boating, so I'm pretty confident on the technical side of things. I guess why I'm posting is just to get it out there - fuck it, I think I'm gonna drive down to the beach after christmas and trade my car for a sailboat and start following the coast!

I work online and don't need 24/7 internet access so long as I can connect every few days to upload documents and answer emails. That and I'm open to the random odd jobs on shore.

Anyone on 420chan ever done the liveaboard thing? What was your experience?

I don't think I've ever seen an ATM that gives more than 400 per transaction and most banks, especially the ones a drunk guy would be using, won't allow many. if any, transactions after that so he couldn't have gotten that much for it.

> why should I trade my car in for another Ford
> why should I?
This is my first car and my mom gave it to me, the dealership wants me to trade it in for a newer one, but everyone tells me dont go for another Ford because they are like the McDonalds of car world. They are the first manufacturer but not the best.
This will be my first inquiry into cars, and could start me on really educating myself.

What about Ford makes you Not Want to have one? What do other car brands offer and can I trade a ford in to other dealerships or am I only allowed to trade in the dealership I got this one from?

This, OP. Battery swaps are ridiculously easy. Just walk your old battery into an auto parts retailer. They offer free battery disposal usually so that's a plus, AND they will show you which battery will fit your car. I did pay like $100 for a spankin' new one but it was worth it.

Honestly if your current car is WORKABLE you should watch YouTube videos about how to fix it up. I watched a LOT of ChrisFix vids when I was working on my last car. It's really quite easy to do regular maintenance on almost any car, provided you have the right tools. Get a hand me down socket set because that'll be your bread and butter. The only things I wouldn't personally try to upkeep are transmissions and engine blocks. Spark plugs, mufflers, batteries and the like are all basic fare for car maintenance.

As for brands, anything Toyota makes lasts FOREVER. Toyota is, to me, the ultimate consumer car company. Their stuff is built well enough to take a beating, and simply enough to be easily accessible for maintenance operations.

I've sent too many cars off to charity or driven them to the scrap yard for the hundred bucks. It sucks and doesn't get you a new car.
Honestly, list it on craigslist if you have the title, as is
Or sell off some parts, look at ebay for examples, trim pieces, chrome grilles, door handles are gold to those who need them.
I mean, or whatever, the $95 will at least get you a cheap bicycle.

Will be coming to South East Asia soon, along the way I want to go somewhere where you can easily get a variety of drugs without repercussions. Is Cambodia a good choice? I know weed is easy to come by there, what about other stuff?

Have no experience with getting drugs in my own country or drug subculture in general, just want to try this to get more life experience and shit.

I leave extremely soon for Thailand. I'm going the Thailand (Bangkok)> Chiang Mai> Laos/Thai border river slow boat all the way down>Cambodia route.

I'll post some pictures and experiences here when I get there. I'm on suboxone so I wont be using hard drugs regularly, but I may be able to score a good morphine or methadone script. Even if I cant, I'll definitely try the opium/PPT in Laos while I'm there on the river.

Nodson's post was dead on about the drugs in the region. He forgot to mention you can get xanax, valium, tramadol, gabapentin, and viagra in nearly all the pharmacies in the region. Cambodia especially will likely have oxy/morphine/ketamine/tramadol/codeine all under the counter no script required, with some even selling morphine injectable ampules.

I don't know, man. I think you need to see what kind of style / topics fit you.

e.g. there's this guy on YT called Bald & Bankrupt, he makes these documentary/interview style videos. There's practically 0 editing. He went to Belarus, met locals, "blended in", talked with them. It's very real, I guess.

Good luck to you, these kind of videos are amazing if done properly!

How often do you think people are in a situation where 1) they want to get a new job and 2) they want to mvoe and 3) they cant decide where to move to?

Well I'm developing an app that cross-references a bunch of information for you in order to get an idea of where to go, generating a result like the picture <--

Personally, I've never traveled or had to decide on a city. So can you guys tell me what other cool metrics you'd be interested if you were searching?

Spend some time just riding the overground trains and check out the landscape. it's beautiful really and the more rural areas are great to visit especially if you can find the local attractions.
In cities the gaming arcades are a lot of fun too. Pretty much any arcade game you can think of is available if you want to just spend a day playing whatever you can.
If you find some company bar hopping is great too. there's a big variety

The average delay of a Japanese bullet train is just 54 seconds, despite factors such as natural disasters. If the train is more than five minutes late, passengers are issued with a certificate that they can show their boss to show that they are late.

She's making weird ass noises when I turn hard. Screechy and loud. It doesn't do it every time I turn hard, but more often than not.

Anyone else ever experience this? Power steering issue? Steering column?
