I fly out to the Charles de Gaulle airport on Tuesday to join the legion. Any advice from people who've been in a military or avid travelers regarding the best place to get euros, best way to get a metro ticket, best places to eat/drink on the way (10hr train ride). I speak very little french, but a lot of Spanish.

Just got to a cybercafe near fort de nogent. I got sent out for an x-ray of my legs, but on account of the fact of not being able to pay for it, I'm headed back to the states. My advice to those thinking about joining is to go to Aubage and not Fort de Nogent or any of the other selection centers; If you go to a FFL office, they will most likely bring you to Nogent where they take 2-3 weeks to run the tests they run in two days at Aubagne.

you're giving up on your lifelong dream because they asked you to x-ray your legs?
you realize though, that after joining they would ask you to work and kill and die?
anyway, have a safe trip home. maybe try private security services stateside.

And he hasn't entered training yet? Why would they need x-rays? That's usually when you have shin-splints from too much running. Can't he just go ask random frenchies and show them the bill? "Hey French guy! Halp pay bill, I need go kill people for you!"

I'm working on getting a taxi license in New York, not sure if I'm going to drive a yellow cab or uber/lyft, but I need a job where I can pick my hours and don't have some shithead boss yelling over my shoulder.
Anyone have advise, anecdotes, or experience?

Im a delivery rider in a busy city. I can work when I want, it can be cruisy or grueling. Its a fairly wild and liberating lifestyle. Any delivery guys here?

yeah, bicycle delivery, I can work at different places and some pay more than others, I get to ride a bike all day which is great exercise, I can spliff it up on runs, I get t o eat good food esp when the cooks fuck something up.
You gotta maintain your bike and get a good basket, have a raincoat and some wrenches and a pump. You have to be reliable with your boss's money and cover all your delivery tickets. You'll meet all kinds of people, don't get robbed, be nice and you'll be alright.

I'm currently dealing with a pretty big fuckup, not even my fault really. The guy who sold me the part has absolutely no excuse to have not known better and its causing me one hell of a headache.

I'm hoping some others can share stories of times they fucked up through their own, or someone else's fault, to make me feel better. Maybe I'll even give you my story if yours make mine look not so bad.

The law enforcement stance is kind of like authoritative parents telling their stoner child: "We know you're doing it, just don't let us catch you."

Basically any conspicuous public use, even in an enclosed vehicle, is grounds for citation. Herb smell is a dead giveaway, so I would recommend edibles and vaping whatever concentrate delights your pleasure receptors.

There's probably a driver's manual available wherever you are at. There tends to be a lot of procedural stuff in there, exactly what's supposed to happen at a 4-way-stop, what to do at a one lane bridge, the like.

Driving school might be a good idea for you. Check what's available, price, reputation, possible reductions on your insurance.

>Where does one even learn to drive?
Driving schools are mandatory in my country (for now), but even if they're not mandatory in yours, i'd take it.
Not only will you be sure you're up to accepted standards, but you're pretty sure that you don't pick up bad habits from your dad/mom/spouse/whoever

As >>35532 mentions, they may also give some insurance benefits and additional options.
If you live far from nearest town/city, i'd grab trailer driving lessons as well.
If you live in a cold area with risk of lots of ice and snow, i'd strongly suggest you take a winter or ice driving safety course as well.

>How do I read the signs?
You'll learn that in the theoretical part of the driving lessons or from the book. The primary ones you need to concentrate on are speed limits and the signs that indicate the state of the road up ahead (like eg. a roadworks, yield or narrowing road sign) or localized rules (eg. a "one way" sign).
A few signs also help with gauging sharp corners etc.

Training with simulation-oriented racing games (eg. Gran Tourismo) helped me to learn to pick up signs and cues. On a race track there is also signage that helps you gaugewhen to brake and turn.

>Any books or online articles I can read?
You'll likely be given a training book or manual as part of your lessons.
On the other hand, there's not really any good books on the subject, but a lot of different driving simulators have cropped up here and there. A few are all-in-one games, while others focus on one area (eg. parking or naviagtion)

>Any tips?
I suggest reading into basic car maintenance and emergency procedures as well. (optionally take a first-aid course once every few years, which can also have job-related benefits)
I also suggest you study the car manual well and learn how to read the service list (this will help you against nasty surprises when buying a used car).
Being able to switch your own lightbulbs and refill the various fluids on your own can save you a lot of money down the road.
Women, elderly people, Audi and BMW drivers are good at showing you how NOT to drive in traffic. The same goes for most C-level workers out there. Especially study anyone that are mismatched with their vehicle (like an itty-bitty lady in a HUGE SUV)
Never drive with a handheld cellphone! Multitasking is a muscle that grows weaker with use!
