My pride and joy is a early 90s (??) Basso Ascot with Columbus MS tubing and full Campagnolo C-Record, not the exact bike in the pic, but close enough. Took me years to try to piece that bitch together at a relatively reasonable price point. A real dream bike that is collecting dust in my parent's basement as I didn't want to bring it to South America with me, crime is a huge issue here and I ain't going to get stabbed for no bike. I bought a real nice locally built frame in Reynolds 753r tubing, top of the line stuff for the era. I am slowly building this up with a vintage Ofmega groupset and going to go full smoked chrome plating for added bling. Have a shitty locally built beater that got totaled when some ass hat braked cold in front of me and busted the forks, though panto'ed Colnago, it is certainly no Colnago. Stored in a shed in the countryside now because it made me pissed to see it all bent up. My OCD classified searching have uncovered a Rossin from the early 80s. Not much to look at, it is resprayed in this hideous glitter red paint, but Rossin was Colnago's master frame builder before he set up shop for himself, so it must be good. Priced a bit high but my only expenses are weed and classic bikes, so what the hell. Thinking of getting a custom tourer made while I'm down here as labour is dirt cheap. Places where there's a designated bike path is fine, but some roads just seem like bikes don't belong there at all, no reasonable option whatsoever. Been taking advantage of my current weird sleep pattern though and taking rides at night when there isn't much traffic, trying to find some sense in it all. What I'd really want/need would be a bike buddy who has the knowhow and common sense about things that I could tag with as a bike mentor type of deal, show me the ropes, but none of my few friends rides bikes. Then follow the Pan American highway all the way to Peru. That may never happen, but it is nice to dream.

There is a lot of back and forth about what a good geometry is for long distance tour bikes and not a lot of agreement, and you're not going to cross the hindu kush or anything too technical. I think hybrids from the early mid 90s are a good choice. The geometry isn't too far off a purpose built tourer and they are not collectible, so you could get a TOTL one for chicken feed. Judiciously upgrade as needed. Realistically any good frame pre-dating the 80s will be ridiculously overpriced. I am not so familiar with newer stuff, I see a lot of Taiwanese bikes for fair prices, can't comment on quality though I doubt they're terrible.

Heres my faithful steed, first road bike Ive had, picked it up for £40 two years ago now and never looked back. I ride everywhere in my city on it, but the real fun comes from exploring and adventuring on it. I take it on trains and explore the country stopping at hostels. picture is from 2 weeks ago, goddamn I love it.I am quite a fit cyclist, but because of the nature of my work, I sometimes have to make a quite arduous commute with a fair bit of baggage, for this I have been planning to build myself an alternative electric mountain bike. However I am a discouraged by feelings that electrical assistance is expensive. Also it has a stigma as being for the fat and elderly and mabe I should man up instead? Does anyone here have any experience with electric bikes?

Places where there's a designated bike path is fine, but some roads just seem like bikes don't belong there at all, no reasonable option whatsoever. Been taking advantage of my current weird sleep pattern though and taking rides at night when there isn't much traffic, trying to find some sense in it all. What I'd really want/need would be a bike buddy who has the knowhow and common sense about things that I could tag with as a bike mentor type of deal, show me the ropes, but none of my few friends rides bikes.
