Hey

What kind of car should I get?

Just got my settlement check in from a car wreck I was in last year.

Looking at a max of $14,000 to spend on the car.

Looking for a sedan from 2008 or later.

reliability/safety is the main thing.

I kind of want something that won't be completely useless in slightly snowy conditions too but I know sedans aren't the way to go for that sort of thing.

That really only applies to super-light economy cars with cheap, skinny tires and also to rear-wheel drive cars. As someone who's experienced Lake Effect Snow his entire life, I can say from experience that front-wheel drive sedans are more than capable at handling "slightly snowy" conditions. A front-wheel drive car with good snow tires is always going to be better than a RWD or a 4x4 They're honestly only useful for getting you out of a ditch and do nothing to prevent you from going into one in the first place, especially driving at highway speeds in 4x4 mode. If you're really worried, you can get a car like a Subaru Outback that has an AWD traction system but I still think they're overrated.

Of course, the biggest factor is always going to be the skill of the driver.

All wheel drive honestly does help with staying on the road in snowy or inclimate conditions. Else they wouldn't use the dang things as rally racers which generally tend to have slippery dirt or gravel surfaces.

However, a 4x4/AWD does NOT make you invulnerable like many many people believe. It will assist you a little at most speeds, and quite a bit at lower speeds (you're right about at highway speed).

So, you know, it does help in a good deal of situations or else it wouldn't even be a thing. You just have to know where and when it can actually help you.

As for OP, front wheel drive sedans are just fine. I live in Michigan and we regularly get pretty fucking horrible conditions from snow and I drive a mid-sized early 90's FWD sedan. Never had a problem from the car itself, just my own mistakes. And no amount of engineering in your vehicle will fix that.

Get a 2008 AWD V6 Mercury Milan Premier. They're great cars and a massive bargain for the money. For $14,000 you could get one in mint condition and have money left over for new wheels, tires, stereo system, full service and detailing plus a pair of fuzzy dice. Or just buy two of them. They're also very safe, reliable and the AWD models are great in any weather conditions.

I'd imagine they improved the terrible engines they used to put in them 6-7 years ago? Every mechanic I've ever known used nothing but Japanese cars but said that the Corollas, Civics, Camrys, and Altimas were all with engine problems in years from about 2002-2008. Especially the Camry.

At least you didn't buy a Dodge Charger like every other cunt who is "into cars."
