Broad general question: is a bom period incoming?

Feels like its all hands on deck for all companies once fall gets in swing. Pretty much every guy I like (subjective) is employed somewhere and now has a stake in their performance going forward while also being paid well. As an old head who remembers taping nitro in one room on a worn out vhs while watching raw (or vice versa), im pretty stoked about the mere prospect of being able to switch from one channel to another on cable tv and see two different wrestling shows on. Nostalgia and all that.

Also,

pretty much every guy on top right now in any company was someone I watched on the indies. I want all these guys and ladies to win and get paid and be able to showcase their talents to a wide audience.

whatever, im stoked about wrestling right now, and im not "picking teams" as it were.

How does everyone else feel about wrestling, as a whole, right now?

hungman page is a dude from njpw. nice that hes getting a push in aew though. for mjf you have a good point.

the post also says that it is "fine for now" that they arent getting in new talent. but in 4 years from now if its still The Codey And His Friends Show then that s when it will be a problem. for the time being i will giggle at the drunken title belt misplacements

>Watch Impact Wrestling with /wooo/ in /wooo/tube - http://taima.tv/r/wooo and /woooalt - http://taima.tv/r/woooalt at 10pm Eastern//3am London. On tonight's show:
  • Sami Callihan & Jake Crist vs. Tommy Dreamer & Tessa Blanchard in a Street Fight.
  • Ace Austin vs. Eddie Edwards.
  • Texano Jr. vs. Dr. Wagner Jr.
  • Michael Elgin in action
  • Big Mami and Nino Hamburguesa vs Desi Hit Squad

>Tessa and Sami
They will forever be linked. Sami Callihan and Tessa Blanchard. Friday they align themselves with some friends for a Street Fight in Mexico. Sami will bring Jake Crist and Tessa will bring Tommy Dreamer. Can Tessa Blanchard finally get her retribution on Sami Callihan? What will happen on this fateful night in Mexico? A Street Fight seems to favor oVe, but Tessa seems to be fully focused on destroying Sami Callihan and whatever sludge he brings from oVe. If it wasn’t for Sami Callihan, Tessa Blanchard might be in line for a World Title match heading into Bound For Glory. Instead, that honor goes to the leader of oVe and Callihan wants to show the world he is worthy of being World Champion.

>Michael Elgin in Action
Michael Elgin will be in action this Friday on a brand new IMPACT Wrestling in Mexico City, Mexico. Who will BIG Mike look to send to the ER this week? Also, don’t forget you can see Michael Elgin all over Oklahoma this weekend as well. Elgin starts on Friday in OK on Twitch with Operation: Override. ElginFuego-300x169 Michael Elgin in Action on Friday Michael Elgin in Action Michael Elgin BIG Mike Then Elgin will be heading to Enid, OK for Victory Road. It is a busy weekend for the man behind the Elgin BOMB!

>BIG Test for Desi Hit Squad
The Desi Hit Squad will have a BIG test on their hands this Friday when then clash with Big Mami and Nino Hamburguesa. This tag team throwdown will challenge the Desi Hit Squad like never before! Will Gama Singh have his guys ready to face this team from AAA in Mexico? The tag team division is looking a little different these days with LAX losing to the North and thus losing their spots on the IMPACT Roster.

>Dr. Wagner Jr. on IMPACT
Dr. Wagner Jr. is a legendary figure in Mexico. Someone who has been competing for decades and collecting championships his entire career. This Friday, Dr. Wagner Jr. on IMPACT Wrestling will have the entire world buzzing with anticipation. Standing across the ring from Dr. Wagner Jr. will be the very physical and intense Texano Jr. There is no doubt that Mexico City, Mexico will be hyped to see this incredible match on IMPACT Wrestling. It all goes down this Friday!

>Will Eddie get his Revenge on Ace Austin?
>Ace Austin showed everyone exactly what kind of man he is in Mexico last week. Ace actually paid a woman to approach Eddie Edwards in front of Alisha and pretend to have had a night alone with the former World Champion. This all played out on television as Ace was seen paying the woman off just a few hours after the interaction between the woman, Eddie and Alisha Edwards. Ace Austin is trying to end a marriage and trying to seduce Alisha all at the same time. What is wrong with Ace Austin?

I watched the """""Season Finale""""" on Wednesday, and I don't get the hype it has behind it. The Crowd was dead, the matches stunk, and they made Nigel look like a complete retard with that "It's No DQ" followed immediately by a DQ. I can't see this show being anywhere near as good as AEW can be stuck in that 400 seat practice arena every week for 2 hours

Unrecorded, unstreamed pro wrestling shows

Had this thought today:

Is there a huge gap in the market by some big time money mark or wrestler to put on huge dream card shows that can sign whoever they want & play whatever music they want with minimal copyright/contractual restrictions? That way the show can be 100% focused on the live experience rather than filming & the show can be sold on a be-there-now point of interest.

I personally feel like the pro wrestling market both independent and otherwise are oversaturated with streaming services & dvd's - the aura of an event being 'exclusive' and 'must-attend' is almost non-existent. You don't really need to be somewhere live anymore. You can torrent, stream or buy a show in many ways from promotions all over the world.

I understand flogging DVD's and streaming subscriptions is part of the hustle of pro-wrestling but it's almost become a handicap in some ways when they can't book a certain wrestler due to X and Y contractual obligations or having some actually decent entrance music - this is ultimately affecting live shows by not being as exciting as they used to.

It might just be a pipe dream of mine. I can see many wrestlers not being motivated to perform at the highest level on a show that isn't taped and global interest not being captured. After all TV is the bread and butter of pro-wrestling, however when you look at other forms of live entertainment such as select concerts and theatre, they aren't filmed at all. The Phantom Of The Opera is going to sell out for decades to come and everyone knows you won't get the same experience if you merely view it through a recording.

Thinking back to the territory era of pro wrestling and how many great, sold-out events weren't filmed, for example. a match between Ricky Steamboat and Ric Flair that was supposedly better than their others wasn't taped. I feel like something special can be created in each country if the right cards were put together and marketed in the right way.

What are /wooo/'s thoughts?

(pic of an NWA ring because old-timey wrestling I guess)

>Watch WWE NXT at 8pm Eastern//1am London, NXT UK at 9pm Eastern//2am London and Straight up Steve Austin at 10pm Eastern//3am London in /wooo/tube - http://taima.tv/r/wooo and /wooo/alt - http://taima.tv/r/woooalt. On tonight's show:
>Next week WWE NXT switches to becoming a live 2 hour show. For the first two weeks, the 1st hour will air on USA Network and 2nd hour will air on the WWE Network.

>The last WWE NXT show before they radically alter the formula forever
  • Johnny Gargano addresses his WWE NXT future.
  • WWE NXT Women's Champion Shayna Baszler vs. Rhea Ripley.
  • Damian Priest vs. BOA.
  • Pete Dunne vs. Angel Garza.
  • Cameron Grimes vs. Raul Mendoza.
>NXT UK
  • NXT UK Tag Team Champions Flash Morgan Webster and Mark Andrews vs. Zack Gibson and James Drake in their first-ever title defense.
  • Tegan Nox returns! vs. Shax.
  • Fabian Aichner and Marcel Barthel in action.
  • Jordan Devlin vs. Ashton Smith.
>Straight up Steve Austin
Gimme a hell yeah!

>Rhea Ripley steps to Shayna Baszler's throne
>Shayna Baszler’s reign is among the most dominant we’ve ever seen by an NXT Women’s Champion. The Submission Magician has dispatched a plethora of challengers, but Rhea Ripley used a surprise appearance two weeks ago to remind Baszler that her list of victims doesn’t include her name. With a few choice words after snatching a microphone from Baszler’s hands, Ripley appears to have her sights set squarely on the longest-reigning champion in WWE. And Ripley knows a thing or two about championship gold herself. The aggressive Aussie won a tournament to become the first-ever NXT UK Women’s Champion a little more than a year ago. Baszler’s indomitable run over the NXT Women’s division has seen her overcome several threats with the Kirifuda Clutch, but Ripley’s powerful repertoire represents a unique obstacle for The Queen of Spades.

>Johnny Gargano addresses the NXT Universe and his future
>The NXT Universe has not seen Johnny Gargano since he lost a gruelling 2-out-of-3 Falls Match with Adam Cole for the NXT Championship at TakeOver: Toronto last month. Gargano shrewdly set himself up for a submission victory in the second fall with the use of a steel chair that cost him the first fall by disqualification, but he was defeated in the final fall inside a steel cage, concluding one of the most brutal battles in NXT history. Johnny Wrestling’s failure to regain the title in the final act of the black-and-gold brand’s most bitter rivalry of 2019 caused speculation to swirl regarding his future on NXT, which he’s called home for more than four years. Gargano has shown an incomparable ability to rebound in the face of adversity, but fans have to wonder about his state of mind — and body — after such a taxing war with Cole consumed him for five months. What will Gargano have to say? Have we seen the end of Johnny TakeOver, or is this merely the start of a new chapter for the heart and soul of NXT?

>Pete Dunne returns to the ring against Angel Garza
>Pete Dunne said if his loss in the NXT North American Championship Triple Threat Match at TakeOver: Toronto against The Velveteen Dream and Roderick Strong knocked him to the “back of the line,” well, bring it on. He’ll begin that endeavor with a challenge from promising upstart Angel Garza, who looks to scale the ranks of NXT. Garza quickly made an impression with his performance in the NXT Breakout Tournament and likely won’t allow Dunne to get back on track without a fight. However, The BruiserWeight’s mighty strikes could be an equally dangerous risk for the renown good looks of NXT’s resident lothario. Wednesday’s matchup will certainly be a clash of unique styles — not to mention personalities.

>Raul Mendoza clashes with Cameron Grimes
> Though Cameron Grimes came up shy of winning NXT’s first-ever Breakout Tournament, he certainly didn’t fail to make an impact in his run to the final against Jordan Myles. Grimes’ gritty, yet seasoned offense — informed by plentiful experience across the nation’s top independent promotions — quickly proved effective in two tournament victories. The Technical Savage should be careful to not overlook his next opponent in the aerial-mindedRaul Mendoza, though, given his demonstrated knack for big victories from an underdog position.

So I was listening to this wrestling podcast "The Miracle Apricot" and there was a really fascinating discussion about wrestling fandom and how there's become a sort of expectation about how only certain types of matches (generally the men's epic style) are classified as great.

Some of the points made

>The need for wrestling cards to have variety and not just all be epics
>going back and realising that you have forgotten many matches you rated highly, but have fonder memories of matches that were fun but didn't fit the mold of what a four star match should be. E.g enjoying a Toru Yano match but not rating it highly because of expectations.
>watching a match and being bored but uncritically acknowledging it as "great" simply because it's the popular style

What does /wooo/ think?

https://soundcloud.com/user-659803623/the-high-speed-wrestling-podcast-episode-8-mio-momono-v-maruko-nagasaki the relevant part of the discussion starts at 10:50

Just got done with their run through of the attitude era PPVs, wanted to know your opinion of it.

Personally I thought it was an ok retrospective, not too detailed so it’s easy to listen to and they seem to have good camaraderie. Negatives were them trying to explain that they weren’t racist and sexist nearly every episode and didn’t condone what was going on, it got a bit tiresome to hear that after the umpteenth time.
Also the main guy (Kevin I think his name is) talk about being a stand up comedian and you can hear how he tries to shoehorn jokes in all the time that just go on too long or fall flat to empty silence afterwards, you would think he gets the message after a while. Who know how many awkward silences he edits out as well.
Overall it was decent, but I think I prefer something with more meat on the bones and with actual research, so I would put the Lapsed fan over this as a go to retrospective review of attitude era shows.

I like everything better than the Lapsed Fan. I'd rather listen to fucking Goldberg's podcast than that shit. I don't want to listen to grown-ass men talk about how awesome and funny they are for a half-hour only to launch into a rant on the minutia of wrestling toys from the early 90s. Which is too bad, because the other guy is good at doing research, but the interesting parts are buried in hours of bad impressions, unfunny skits and reading fan letters about how awesome they are and how much everyone who criticizes them sucks. Also, trying to be overly dramatic and overemphasize every word, as if that somehow makes radical opinions like "Jake the Snake was a good talker" or "Bobby Heenan was really funny" somehow become important and earth-shattering.

Also, lol at everything about that trainwreck of a sketch podcast about Vince. If you were that funny, you'd actually get real comedy gigs.
