Classic character wrestler. Even has a reference on Seinfeld. Can't take that away from him.

As a young attitude era jimmy, in the UK we got a show called WWF classics, which were rebroadcasts of Prime Time Wrestling episodes from the 80's. A fellow jimmy told me about George 'The Animal' Steele, "the best wrestler I've ever seen, he never loses" (because this show only showed jobber matches). Never really followed his career much, but I did think he was well cast as Tor Johnson in Ed Wood. RIP

At the very least, I'm looking forward to see who eats a turnbuckle pad as a tribute.

Another unfortunate passing within the week in wrestling. He certainly was one of WWE's most colorful characters with his green tongue and tearing apart the turnbuckle pad. Far too young to have seen him in his prime, but when my brother and I were young we had a VHS of classic WWF matches. His match with Macho Man was on it, and we always thought Steele eating the turnbuckle was hilarious. Welp you know the protocol by now boys as I am typing this; Meltzer and Cornette are both respectively going to dedicate a generous 20 minutes of discussion to the man behind the gimmick

Didn't Randy go on record saying he hated working with George because George was garbage at selling? I mean even in the 80's Vince hated the concept of selling because it got in the way of his masturbation fantasies

I dunno what kind of matches this guy was involved in besides the Intercontinental Championship program. Did this guy work WCW like every other nostalgia act did leaving Vince for more coke money?

It's kinda hard to be a fan of something when you're too busy being a fan of having your diaper changed. A late 80s birth would be ~10-11 around the time of the AE which was a perfect time to get into it. Most of that stuff was great for 11-13 year olds.

>As Steele recalled in a later shoot interview, his infamous "Duh-dahh" interview style happened by accident. Throughout his career, Steele prided himself on being able to cut eloquent and effective promos, and ranked his mic skills with the best in the business. At a WWF TV taping in the early 1980s, he was cutting one of these promos when Vince McMahon cut him off, and reminded Steele that his gimmick was the "Animal", and for an animal he was "making too much sense". Incensed, Steele did a second take of nothing but garbled and incoherent syllables ("Duhh-dahh"). Steele did this deliberately and out of pure frustration, thinking that McMahon would acquiesce and allow Steele to cut his normal, eloquent promos.
