I've worked indie shows with Snow and he legit just rambles about absolutely nothing as far as wrestling logic and psychology goes and after telling you how you shouldn't do a bunch of things during a match, he goes and does them in his match.

The trick is that he speaks with such an inane and glaring confidence that it comes across as sacred knowledge.

Al Snow is one of the biggest malcontents in wrestling. He is one of the reasons why OVW lost their developmental deal with WWE. He alienated Triple H and Shawn Michaels when they visited OVW. He also lied to then Head of Developmental, Mike Bucci (a.k.a. Simon Dean and Nova) several times. Even OVW owner Danny Davis has said that Al Snow rubs people the wrong way.

The problem with the "what draws" line of thinking is

  1. you have no idea why anyone bought a ticket, it's not unreasonable to believe most people went to and bought that show cause of the main event, but it's still an assumption. I've been to 3 WWE shows, and an NXT show, and I went cause of the brand, not because I knew what the card was. Shoot, for WWE PPVs most tickets are sold well in advance of any card being announced. And on the other hand I watched PWG cause I wanted to see Joey Ryan lose the title, which while for their title wasn't always treated as their main draw. And I went to BOLA 07 cause I wanted to see Jack Evans vs Pac on night one and went to the next two nights cause I had a friend to stay with in LA.

2. match ratings are suppose to be a form of recommendation to other fans to go back and watch something, how much money it made is a completely different and irrelevant measurement. If I want you to have a good time watching wrestling, I'm going to suggest you watch 88 and 89 Jim Crockett Promotions, it's so much fun and they were losing so much money Ted Turner ended up buying them.

That's actually kinda cool. But King of Trios is kinda a brilliant way to explain the absurdity of money equals quality.

I'm near 100% sure king of trios loses money when you just count the live gate, like most indies. So how can you argue the matches get better when the DVD sales start rolling in and the show becomes profitable?

Ostensibly. Not actually. Sports families are there to cheer on their boy to victory, no amount of emotional support will make winning anymore likely than what's already been arranged. Either you let your loved ones in on the finish or you work them like every other mark in the crowd. That's my interpretation at least.
For context he was talking about the Cornette-Santino slapping incident, since Santino claims he laughed off Boogeyman because his daughter was in the crowd and he didn't want her to feel scared (ala 'see honey? It's just pretend!'). i.e. should you bring family to see content that will distress them? His point was that it's a job with pre-ordained expectations, not a competition where outcomes are ambiguous. TBH could've used things like "painter" or "sculptor" instead. Still a creative process with an ultimate goal, still tedious to watch like his examples.

While working at waffle house Al came in with this nasty meth addicted looking chick. He ordered a triple order of hash browns all the way, with gravy and chili on top. it was like 7 lbs of food. He wanted a triple order of eggs to go with it. After I stopped geeking I asked him about wrestling. He went on a long drawn out tangent about marks and working and all the other insider terms I hadn't heard before ( before /wooo/ was around, back when I didn't have internet)
He eventually made his cracked out galpal bored and she got up and played "Get ready cuz here I come" on the juke box, unfortunetly that song skipped and would repeat itself shortly after the start, going "GET READY, EADY EADY EADY EADY""
So now I've got an empty restaurant with Al Snow ranting on about the pro's and con's of gimmick matches while his crackhead lady is beating the shit out of the juke box.

For what it's worth he specifically refers to "Mr & Mrs Wallmart" when asked to elaborate. Casual viewers, 'mainstream' audiences, Corny's ROH ideal. Not the kinds of people who'd care to look up star ratings at all, but the kinds that "smarks" got coined to differentiate from. The fact you're using indie shows as examples underlines the disconnect.
Notice how the example he uses was (at the time) wrestling's biggest gate ever. During it's peak presence (at the time) in everyday pop culture. His point was that it took appealing to 1980s normies who just wanted flashy distractions with a Hercules vs Goliath spectacle anybody could grasp to get that many butts in seats. It took 20 years of advancements in travel, communication, advertising etc. for WWE to top that number, which given the absolute fucking state of its card was owed to JUST those 20 years of advancements IMO. Because the normies market dried up and those obsessives left want more Steamboat-v-Savage instead.

I met Al Snow at my work as well. It was a fine dining restaurant about 3 years ago. He came in with a bunch of really hot girls and ordered a bunch of seafood. When he was walking to the washroom I said "Al Snow!" and he surprisingly came up to me and talked to us about wrestling a bunch. I am not joking. It sounds way to close to that other guys story. Why the fuck does he insist on rambling to strangers about wrestling. I just wanted to say hey.
