Fox can and likely will cancel them. Their stocks will plummet. There will be massive layoffs killing locker room morale. Between this and the XFL failing, Vince will have a heart attack and die. Roman's cancer will return. Brock will go back to UFC. John Cena will never return. HHH will put every single belt on himself to try to pop ratings but blow his quad, ending his in-ring career. Linda will be busted in a political corruption scandal and jailed. Shane will leave wrestling again. AEW will get a TV deal and become the fastest rising wrestling product ever. They'll raise the price of the WWE Network in an attempt to make up more money but it will backlash and cause fans to cancel their subscriptions. Someone on the roster will pull a Benoit. Hulk Hogan will drop the N word on Raw. It's over.

This is why you can't compare Nielsen ratings to past years anymore. TV ratings are down across the board. For example, Young Sheldon is the highest rated sitcom on TV, but 10 years ago, if a sitcom pulled in those kinds of numbers, it would be considered a failure and be cancelled.

A lot of people simply don't have TV anymore. Nielsen boxes are in less homes than ever before. Yet every other week or so, some idiot makes a thread about "OMG WORST WWE RATINGS EVER THEY'RE GOING OUT OF BUSINESS!1" without having any idea about the situation at large.

Stone Cold was already hitting his stride in 1996 and didn't do shit ratings-wise until two years later. The weird thing watching it back is nothing really 'clicked', he was always great, it just took a long while to attract casual eyes. The way WWE is set-up now an organic rise to the top like that is practically impossible, they're not interested in anybody being a 'draw', just the company itself.

I assume cable ratings are a percent of all cable-subscribed households in the US, and not all TV owners, so the 2.4 in 1993 would translate to about 1.7 million viewers, but that's just some napkin scribbles on my part. Also bear in mind that those earlier years, there wasn't really any sort of special feeling about the post-Mania Raws, so those probably aren't held to any sort of standard like they would later.

"Stone Cold" Steve Austin, or as he would be known in 2019, "Austin" would be booked the same as everyone else, where his gimmick is that he's just happy to be there, to entertain all of you in the WWE Universe, and people would argue that him getting beaten up by Road Dogg and Billy Gunn, then having old, broken down X-Pac rub his balls in his face during the post-Mania Raw is actually a huge honor, because they trust him in the ring with legends.

Yeah but I also think it's a poverty problem. Same reason why SO many stores are closing. Amazon puts a dent into them sure but a much bigger problem is that people just don't have the money to spend a lot.

The main problem with any business these days that doesn't have an exclusively rich clientele is the increasing wealth inequality shit. Heard Meltzer say multiple times that the way ticket sales and shit used to work is that jacking up the prices was always a good move because people would buy more because they'd see it as a more prestigious product worth their money or some shit, if that shit was ever true it's not anymore and I bet WWE attendance would go up on SOME level at least if WWE slashed ticket prices, same for ratings/cable prices.

> its biggest declines have been that year, 2015 and the past year or so. When did cord-cutting etc. become a phenomenon?
Probably 2015, hence the big ratings drop you mentioned. HBO Now started in late 2014 (which was a HUGE deal for cordcutters), cable companies started launching more streaming/on demand options to try to win customers back, products like Roku, Apple TV, Chromestick, etc all took off in 2015.

I'm 30 and I don't know a single person that has cable anymore besides my parents. Most of my friends don't watch TV live as it airs at all, unless it's like the Super Bowl or the Oscars or something.

Is cordcutting just an American phenomenon?

Like here in the UK everybody I know still has Sky/Virgin, it's important especially for sports. Although maybe it's because i'm kinda middle class and the phenomenon is lower, I don't know, but i've never really heard the concept used outside of Wrestling fandom

From the UK. Obv older folk still have Sky/Virgin

I don't watch TV (perhaps easier as I don't watch sports). That's not to act all high and mighty about it; I spend more time looking at a screen than ever - just not a television

Why are you morons talking about cord cutting again when all the legal ways that you can watch the show are factored in to the calculation? It has been explained multiple times that the only way to fall out of the ratings numbers is if you watch the show illegally.

Why would you watch RAW? Matches are sub bar, there arnt real stars in show, booking is so slow because everything is leading to pay per view. Slowness wouldn't be issue of show wasn't 3h long. Then there are general issues about booking. If some one gets hot wwe can't make him/her any hotter anymore, they just end up cooling. Also there is little point getting behind someone in main roster becouse because they only get fucked by booking.

It's weird how making the worst part of the show the focus of the show solely to pander to a small number of very vocal but mentally ill people on the internet would kill ratings.
Who would have known?

Its not that big number, you can look downloads and see they are in thousands then start looking where livestreams settels. Even of illegal were at 100k that would be whole world number, so usa number would be something like half of that. If illegals numbers were actually huge then you would see streams and sites way more then you actually are seeing.

Ausfag here, it's somewhat the same because Foxtel has all the big sports locked down like F1 and Rugby. Although if people don't watch sports it seems the trend is to avoid live TV as well.

Some stuff on TV still get people watching ASAP - GoT Season 8 started last night and the world and it's mother watched it live at 2am.

From what I can tell, americans need the numbers to validate these as successes, despite being an outdated measurement. Financial stability and net profit are more important these days. Example - the NFL getting billions in TV deals despite half-empty stadiums and general apathy to the product, but even then their own RedZone programming on NFL Network is the superior way to watch an "hour-long" sport that lasts around three hours on average. We all moaned about a seven hour Wrestlemania last week - granted, you could make the excuse that it is Wrestlemania and it only comes once a year, but why not do that for the Superbowl? Make it a 5 hour match each time. FA Cup / Champions League finals? Make them long as well, there's not enough football to go around anymore.

Yeah, TV only really exists for once-in-a-generation television shows, live sports, or to babysit kids for parents that can't be fucked to do their jobs properly. Even then kids would rather sit on a tablet or phone instead of watching TV with its static schedules.

TV will die eventually, to be replaced with services and subscriptions like Netflix, Sky Sports, etc which allow you to buy only the content you want to watch, and not pay a £13 monthly TV "license" to the BBC for the privilege.

Also, WWE airs here in the UK live at stupid-o'clock in the morning. Ratings mean fuck all here for the Dub.

I'll get off my soapbox now.

I'm laughing.

Also, BBC has by far the most eyes on its channels compared to other terrestrial channels and certainly the ones tied behind Sky.

Most eyes = biggest. Forget financials and assets. One can reach probably only a third of the country, the other is there for all 65+ million to view and for the most part, two thirds of the country watch BBC programming.
